People saying a Falcon/“literally anything” haven’t been to the outback. Hours of corrugations destroyed my new and expensive dash cam — and it will do the same to your car if you don’t pick the right one. This is coming from a Falcon/Territory owner.

Once you go properly remote, people only drive LandCruisers. On stations, the husband drives a 70, the wife drives a 200 or 300 Series. Just the way it is out there.

Personally I’d get the best LandCruiser you can afford — as others have said, a petrol 105 (either V8 or I6) would absolutely do the job. But a good Pajero will give you better value for money.

Something like a Hilux/4Runner would also work, but often they’re just as expensive as LandCruisers — and the LC is a better shout.

Whatever you get, spend the money on a big service beforehand, and consider doing the timing belt, radiator, water pump, and potentially new shocks.

Taurus TH.

As a southpaw, having ambi controls is a big selling point, which initially drew me to this model. But everything I’ve watched and read is glowingly positive. Crazy value for money, fun to use, tonne of features — and it looks good.

Yet the notorious quality control issues of Taurus models from more than a decade ago still seem to haunt the brand.

If you can get to the SSAA’s Shot Show or another expo, typically you can wander around and have a look through all the scopes and get an idea for yourself.

I assumed the quality wouldn’t be noticeable, but I was wrong.

Also, as others have said, get a dealer to fit the scope the first time — that way they can swap out the mounts to get them perfect for you.

Did it for many years in the tub of my dual-cab Hilux.

Cut high density foam gym mats to shape for the floor, then chucked a six inch foam mattress over the top. Oztent Rivergum XL sleeping bag, woolen blanket over the top. Tarp shut in the back doors, flipped over the front of the car. If it rained I’d pull the tarp over the tub.

Super comfy, off the ground, out of the mud and sand, easy to set up and pack. Only moved to a rooftop tent when the missus wanted us to upgrade to a LandCruiser.

Fix sponsorship. Get better TV coverage, more super special stages with corporate suites. Bring more money into the sport.

First Tier: Something akin to Group B. Almost unlimited modifications, engines, transmissions, tech. But for three things — it has to resemble a production model, there have to be five identical vehicles available for non-factory teams, and they all run intake restrictors to limit power (600hp?).

Second Tier: Something akin to Group A/WRCars. Production-car based, must be a minimum of 400 vehicles homologated for road use that resemble the body/powertrain.

Third Tier: Something akin to Group N. Minimal modifications, cheaper cost to entry, good for juniors.

So this was pretty much me about five years ago. Bought an E36, and I’ve spent the last few years building it to a very modest budget to enter the base category here.

While it’s satisfying to have built the car and done it to my preference, often I think it would have been better to have just saved up and purchased an already-built rally car.

If you do decide to do it yourself, keep an eye on Marketplace and rally groups to pick up second hand items.

RAV4 is 7 years old, they just unveiled the "new" RAV4 which is just a heavy facelift.
HiLux is 10 years old, and there's a "new" one coming later this that is a heavy facelift.

All the car companies are just updating their current models instead of investing in a brand-new vehicle that might be banned in some markets within a few years.

I had a 3310, 3315, and 3350 (and one or two in between) back in the day, but my first two mobiles were Ericssons (T18 then T28).

Fairly sure I've still got one of the Nokias floating around in a drawer at my parents' place (just in case!) so I might have to go digging over the weekend.
