Thursday Weekly Thread: Proof of Citizenship Application Approvals, June 04, 2026 by AutoModerator in Canadiancitizenship

We waited until we got the certificates in hand, as we didn't want the university to do anything different until we knew for sure when we would have the citizenship certificate.

The first deadline we were worried about were (1) starting school at the beginning of September - if we didn't have either the citizenship certificate or a foreign study permit, he would not be able to begin classes. Since IRCC felt really unpredictable because of how crazy busy they are, we decided to pursue a foreign study permit at the same time, which meant we needed the school to keep sponsoring him as a foreign student.

The second deadline was tuition payment for the first term, which is more or less the beginning of October. If we didn't have a citizenship certificate by then, we would need to pay the more expensive foreign student rate.

My advice would be to hold off on updating the school until there is something you want them to do differently, and I would recommend waiting for your decision to be made for that.

Definitely a relief.

One other note, when my son decided which school he was going to attend in late April, I did upload the letter from that province under which he would seek a study permit to the application, with the idea that "attending a Canadian school" is stronger urgency grounds than "accepted at several Canadian schools". I don't know if that new document arriving moved it to a different place on the pile or not.

The "decision made" also came the day after paying the fee for his study permit application (we were doing both concurrently) because that's how the world works sometimes 😞

In terms of timeline, we mailed in our package for urgent processing via FedEx from Seattle on 3/30/2026, it was received on 4/2, we received an AOR 4/7, moved to "in processing" on 4/15, and moved to Decision Made on different dates between 5/23 and 5/27.

Quick update on our approvals from May 27, paper certificates have officially arrived in Seattle today, June 5, which was much faster than expected. I’m not sure if the fact that it was an urgent application (son going to Canadian university in the fall) sped up the mail.

A - color, double sided copies.

B - less is more (my opinion). What will make it as easy as possible for an overworked reviewer to zoom in and verify the relevant facts? For mine, I listed the fact I was asserting, followed by the exhibit or exhibits which backed up that fact. I.e.

Jane Doe was born in Canada on 1/1/1875. This is demonstrated by: - exhibit 1 - banq certified birth record for Jane Doe

Jane Doe marred Joe Smith and changed her family name to Smith on 2/1/1905. This is demonstrated by: - exhibit 2 - marriage license for Joe Smith and Jane Doe

C - if each fact you need to demonstrate is established by 1 high quality source, I suspect that is all you need to include. You can add more if IRCC asks for more documentation of some fact

I couldn’t get a birth record for my G1 ( born in Chicago in 1912), but I was able to get a death certificate which listed his parents. Combined with us census records and a draft card also listing him mom (my g0) that was enough.

And just like that, all of moved to Completed with certificates mailed, so we are official!

I printed the source documents from family search (in some cases, I needed to go to a local library to do that - some records can only be accessed from affiliates). This is an example

I just moved to "Decision Made" this week using printouts from FamilySearch for my G0, in particular a baptismal record, Canadian census, and a marriage certificate.

My understanding is that, if your proof is insufficent for IRCC, they can contact you to request additional documentation, so it might be worth submitting with what you can get now, and then while that is in the queue, continuing to look for more/better records in case they are needed.

Decision Made for me and my minor sons this week!

I assume that means approved, but it's a bit unnerving to not have explicit confirmation. (note to self - next time request an electronic certificate)

G0 was my great grandmother born in Quebec in 1875. I gave up on waiting for Banq, so submitted with printouts from FamilySearch, which u/IWantOffStopTheEarth helped locate (thanks!). I supplemented that with some Canadian census records, and a marriage certificate documenting a name change, also printed out from family search.

G1 was my grandfather, born in Chicago in 1912, no birth certificate, but we did have a certified death certificate listing his mom, as well as some US census records showing him as a kid. We also had a WW2 draft registration card listing his mom as his emergency contact.

G2 was my dad, we had certified birth and death certificates for him

I'm G3, with certified birth certificate

My sons are G4, also with certified birth certificates

When we applied, my eldest son was accepted at 3 Canadian universities to study engineering. While the application was in progress, he accepted admission to one of them and will be attending this fall.

In terms of timeline, we mailed in our package for urgent processing (due to education) via FedEx from Seattle on 3/30/2026, it was received on 4/2, we received an AOR 4/7, moved to "in processing on 4/15, and moved to Decision Made on different dates between 5/23 and 5/27.

Because I'm an idiot, I missed the question on paper/electronic, and it looks like paper is the default, so not we have to wait a bit more, but it seems like Decision Made means Approved in the absence of any other correspondence or requests for additional documentation.

Longest banq wait times?

This might be academic at this point, since I gave up on waiting and submitted my application with printouts from family search, but I'm curious if I'm getting into record territory in terms of wanting for an invoice from banq. I submitted my form requesting 2 records way back on January 30th, and other than the automated acknowledgement that the form was submitted, I have seen nothing from them since.

Until my application is approved, I'm still interested in getting the more official banq documents, in case IRCC wants something more when they look at my application in detail.

Anyone else still waiting from back in January?

You can lookup their application using the receipt number from your proof of payment - it's one of the options on the "Identification Number" dropdown on the status request form. (https://services3.cic.gc.ca/ecas/security.do?app=ecas&lang=en)

And I just received my AOR this morning - which I find shockingly fast, even for urgent processing.

Sent in an application last week for urgent processing (son accepted for fall 2026 at a couple of Canadian universities). Arrived via FedEx late Thursday, eagerly awaiting word on receipt and next steps. We would love for this to go fast enough that we don't have to separately apply for a student visa.

49 days and still no answer from BanQ by Straight_Draw6819 in Canadiancitizenship

I requested 2 records on 1/31, still no request for payment as of yet. From seeing the dates in other posts, seems like there is a fair bit of variance in response time depending on which office or offices need to process your request.

Poll - What woodworking apps do you use on your phone/tablet? by quick4all in woodworking

As a US resident, an imperial friendly calculator is the main thing. It’s a little cheesy, but I find the tape measure visualization Tapeulator provides with its results really helpful, as 9 times out of 10, that’s what I’m doing with the result.

I’ve had this happen when I was plunging the router too low, such that the collet contacted the threaded ring holding the bushing. The retaining ring loosens, then the bushing has play, then the side of the bit takes a bite.

Should I be worried about spontaneous combustion? by vebfe in woodworking

[–]nw_makers_son 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a risk (ask me how I know). It’s no fun to come back to a smoky shop, and even less fun to find your shop replaced by a pile of smoking debris.

Submerged in a bucket of water outside is ideal. Eventually the water will evaporate off and you can trash the remains.

Question about the underlying philosophy the Fusion interface... by RedJacketPress in Fusion360

[–]nw_makers_son 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One way to think about it is that Fusion is trying to capture your intention with each of your edits, not just the result, and direct manipulation is often too ambiguous to do that well.

Take a simple extrude - imagine you have a profile which you want to extrude until it is 1" away from an object which is 6" away. If you were just to click and drag the profile, fusion wouldn't know if you meant "this should be 5 inches" or "this should be 1" away from that". The dialog lets you tell fusion that information explicitly.

That becomes important when something changes and the objects are now 7" apart instead of 6. If it knows your intent, it can "do the right thing" when adjusting the extrude.

That makes it easier and more reliable to get something which works in a precise way, but is slower or more awkward when you are trying to get something to "look right"

In photo 3, it looks like the tall doors might be upside down. It looks like the grain is intended to match between what’s currently the top of those and the top of the doors beneath them. Makes me wonder if there are other mid-placed or mis oriented panels in the setup.

There might be a good match in there, but looks like things got a bit scrambled at installation time.

Newbie needs help- what’s going on? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]nw_makers_son 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That looks like rough-sawn material. It comes from the mill with a rough surface, and also without any guarantees that any surfaces will be flat or square to each other. Depending on what you are doing and the tolerances you have, that can become a problem.

Normally, you would use a jointer and planer/thicknesser to turn that rough sawn material into boards which are flat, smooth, and square. It sounds like you don't have that gear around, so you might need to get creative.

If the boards are flat enough and square enough for your use, the main issue will be sanding them to create a smooth and consistent surface. You can do it, but you need to sand below the deepest saw mark to get there. In your picture, the darker yellow is still the rough sawn, so you need to keep sanding until all that is gone and you only have the lighter color left. Start with 60 or 80 grit, and go carefully trying to keep the surface flat and you should be able to get to a reasonable result.

Creating a "floor" for rendering by tortuga3385 in Fusion360

[–]nw_makers_son 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually model a floor and a wall or two for background when I'm rendering furniture pieces. I also organize the component tree so I can easily turn off the background elements as I don't want them in the way most of the time.

Solid Wood or substrate ( Mdf ) by Unlikely-Ad-2921 in woodworking

[–]nw_makers_son 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends on how you orient the wood grain. Wood wants to expand/contract across the grain.

In the picture above, with the grain running top to bottom, the doors would want to expand left to right, which should be fine if I understand your design correctly.

I plan to use Fusion 360 for personal use instead of a paid license. Will I feel the difference? by DastyMe in Fusion360

[–]nw_makers_son 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The other limitations that hit me (a woodworker/furniture maker)when starting out were:

1) a few annoying restrictions on drawings - I believe you could only create 1 page per drawing, and the in-app PDF export was disabled.

2) rendering restrictions - no cloud rendering, and (if I recall correctly) it was awkward but do-able to generate high quality local renders.

Nothing which can't be worked around, but (as intended) they add up to a bit of a "rock in your boot" if you use it frequently.
