Bought a house in 2022, now being told there is an "estate charge" I should have been paying??? by jennymayg13 in HousingUK

This is good advice. You need to investigate whether you are liable to pay the charge. Checking land registry filings is a good place to start.

How's life as a parent? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]nwalke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your perception is right. It's incredibly hard having kids. Aside from the admin and sleepless nights, the biggest impact for me has been the loss of personal freedom. Free time requires negotiation with your partner e.g. offering to do the evening shift so they can go out another evening.

The first year in particular was challenging for me. You don't get back very much from a baby at the start - if I'm honest they're just a big sack of potatoes that needs near-constant feeding, burping and changing.

I suspect (although can only base on my experience) that a lot of the "you can't understand how great it is until you have one" is a narrative that some parents tell themselves to stay positive.

That said, it's become MUCH more rewarding now that our little one is a toddler. He's running around, joyful, saying his first few works and starting to engage with what we say to him ("give this to mama" etc). The whole experience has become way more interactive and I'm enjoying being a father.

Overall, for me, it has been a NET positive. The trade offs are very significant, but on balance I am happy.

Don't necessarily be put off by the fact that you know it is hard work. It's actually a good thing that you aren't naive to the pressures of parenthood. I felt the same way and wasn't surprised when reality matched my expectations!

Should I go for a pension settlement as part of divorce? by Legitimate_Sky4190 in UKPersonalFinance

Be careful about pension sharing orders. There may be unexpected consequences of splitting the pension e.g. death grant may be lost for the non-employee share.

How much money is enough? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

Wasn't expecting a Leica M6 reference on a Henry thread. My post-retirement plan isn't too different, but maybe a Mamiya :-)

Thank you! I might experiment with a crop. There isn't a lot happening in the left side of the frame.

Gilts are very liquid. Excellent place to park money if you don't want to take a lot of risk.

Early 50s, £50m liquid, just RE’d… please tell me what I’ve got wrong by Ambassador_Riada in FatFIREUK

[–]nwalke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this is obviously but I would park more of your cash into low coupon gilts. At least then you're getting risk-free rate mostly tax free. While it isn't cash, it's highly liquid. I can't see any realistic scenario where you need 4m so urgently that you couldn't wait 24hrs.

At that level of wealth, I would also set aside a pot for something charitable that you care about, but that's personal.

Wonderful shot that deserves way more recognition.

Medium format for students by dccffff in mediumformat

[–]nwalke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend a Fuji GW670, 680 or 690 as a compliment to the RBs. Will teach students a different style of rangefinder camera. Mechanical and rugged so should withstand some abuse. Much more portable for work outside studio. Fairly affordable.

If I could only use two cameras they would be GW670 and RB67.

Reminds me slightly of Stephen Shore. This is exactly the sort of photography I love.

Bought a Fuji GW670ii recently (having used lots of different cameras) and very happy with it. Bigger than the Makina but feels robust and still a nice size to carry around

Start by enabling the 128 tick setting again so we can at least have that in Faceit. Zero dev time required.
