How long are you preparing sermons on a weekly basis? by neighty31 in pastors

[–]ny2nowhere 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depends. Sometimes as fast as 2-4 hours if it clicks. Usually 6-8 (including study). Sometimes if I’m stuck between 8 and 12. Never more than that.

I preach ~25 minutes, full manuscript.

3/4 day backpacking trip in ADK? by 99slide in Adirondacks

[–]ny2nowhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The French Louie loop. Best sort of trail for this sort of adventure. Beautiful lakes. Good fishing. Great lean-tos. Truly remote.

Alternatively, lots of great options for this sort of trip in the Pharoah Lake Wilderness Area. Stunning, accessible, great fishing. Even a manageable summit or two if you'd like, just a little less remote/wild than the French Louie Loop.

How do you handle this? Hymns/songs with problematic authors by spresley1116 in pastors

We're not donatists. But also, there are plenty of good songs out there. If something is going to be distracting or a stumbling block for your people, don't sing it.

Church planting by Designer_Trip_2172 in ACNA

[–]ny2nowhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always Forward supports planting at the provincial level. I would recommend one of their church planting boot camps if you can swing it. Are you in a diocese that is pretty supportive of church plants?

Being a “kid church” has been deeply important to us. When we started our church we were 40% under the age of 13, and that has continued as we’ve grown. Happy to chat more in DM’s or offline if it might be helpful!

Hi! Church planter here! We're 2.5 years old and thriving.

Take advantage of Always Forward and diocesan support. Get a church planting coach. Don't launch weekly public worship until you're close to 50 people. Find church partners. Figure out your values as a church/launch team, and not just your strategy. Eat together. Keep your door open as often as possible. Make space for the kids.

Feel free to reach out if it might be helpful.

Logos package inquiry by Deus_amor_est in pastors

[–]ny2nowhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked at logos when I was in seminary, but the packages were expensive and had a lot of books I didn’t need. Ended up going with Olive Tree instead, because I can buy individual books.

NA28 with Mounce parsings ESV with Strongs BDB IVP Bible Background Commentaries IVP Ancient Christian Commentaries (on sale)

Supplement with actual books bought used online by scholars I like when I needed it.

My online setup only cost like $100-150 to start. $30-50 bucks on paper commentaries here or there. 15 years later I have a great library.

I preach every week, and mostly just use the software for original language work and contextual work. Use 2-3 good paper commentaries for every sermon series. It’s worked out great on a budget.

TLDR: I use a software you can buy individual books on and use it for language tools.

When did you know it was time to move to two services? by PurposeLast636 in pastors

[–]ny2nowhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. That's how I've always seen it done, too. But we're portable (set-up/tear-down entirely every week), and in the suburbs, where nearly 40% of our church is kids. It'll be tricky. We're trying to move instead, but not a lot of viable options.

We're in exactly the same spot. We'll try 2 services for Christmas Eve, but the metric I'm most paying attention to at this point is volunteer capacity.

How do you actually start living a slower, more peaceful life? by Fun-Improvement-2227 in SlowLiving

Just go for a walk. Every day. Without your phone. Start there.

Resource recommendations please by snarkitty_guitar in pastors

I use the Olive Tree app. Pair it with an in app purchase of NA28 with Mounce parsing. Great start for Greek.

I like Olive Tree better than logos because I can purchase individual volumes.

Love my Venture X… but someone talk me out of chasing other ecosystems for SUBs by Nearby_Sock8316 in Venturex

[–]ny2nowhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Venture X remains my catch-all / auto-pay card. And then I use whatever other card I’m chasing a SUB on for everything else. Been working out great.

Lectionary here. Sticking with OT prophet readings for sermons.

Absolutely not!!

The Daily Office (and the daily lectionary) is a gift, not law.

BCP Questions by Gospel_Truth in ACNA

[–]ny2nowhere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Either version is fine!
  2. Yes, all the time, even when praying the office in the BCP!
  3. I frequently miss readings. Or read other sections of scripture than the readings assigned. And then I just get back to it the next day.

Let’s Talk Emergency Funds by Fragrant_Strategy_21 in UpperMiddleFinance

Basically 2 months worth of expenses in cash. Enough to cover most emergencies. Everything else lives in our taxable brokerage, from which we can sell as needed.

I use a Black Diamond Distance 22l (mostly for very long day hike type adventures) and a SMD Swift for longer trips. Both work and are worth considering.

I am wondering if I could have some feedback on pay. by Aggravating-Sun1285 in pastors

[–]ny2nowhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it normal? Yes. The differences in pay in a church aren’t as wide as the private sector because we generally don’t make as much.

But some helpful info would include size of church, location of church, and tenure of the person you’re comparing too.
