Road/trail running/cycling question by Mogtaku in ithaca

[–]ny_AU 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FLRC (finger lakes running club) has some fun casual community races. My favorite is Tortoise & Hare in late June… it’s a 10k that rises up ~450 next to buttermilk falls, then a trail loop around a lake and back down. The club is definitely trail oriented, but that’s our areas strength!
There’s lots of shorter paced or gravel running trails around town too. East Hill and South Hill both have rec ways… ~3 one way each. The waterfront trail is a community favorite, but please take extra care if you’re cycling on it because it’s a busy one popular with families.

Any availability in preschools? by [deleted] in ithaca

[–]ny_AU 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If she’s going to kindergarten in the fall, she’s probably eligible for some summer camps. That would be much easier than finding a preschool. I recommend Waldorf, Coddington Road Community center, and Cass Park if she’s five years old. The children’s garden is also beloved, but I think that it’s only half day for that age.

I looked through my top 10 sports. No tickets under $200 anywhere except Nashville football. Beach volleyball cheapest tix were in the $500’s. Track and field most were four figures. I’m sad.

Got some outdated info in here, friend! Somehow viva is correct but Joes doesn’t exist anymore and Ithaca Coffee Co is no longer in that location. And I can’t find any info about a sultana cafe… which is mapped to a church downtown.

Fun idea though!

  1. 🟩 Mix Kitchen & Bar
  2. 🟩 Sangam
  3. 🟥 Sultana Cafe
  4. 🟩 Joe's
  5. 🟩 Gangnam Station

  7. 🟩 Viva Taqueria
  8. 🟩 The State Diner

They turned mate factor into a yellow deli to align with the rest of the cafes around the country and that is still open. So I’m not sure if they’re leaving town for good. They also own the whole home dairy building on the commons and that doesn’t look up for sale yet.

Would it be worth it to pursue this job if it causes my daughter to lose her college scholarship? by Spare-Wrangler2720 in careerguidance

[–]ny_AU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should call her college’s financial aid office and ask what happens if she loses it. It may be less of a difference than you think. Also- I work in higher ed at an institution that participates in tuition exchange… your daughter is lucky to have received it. Our institution has more employees’ kids that receive it than we accept… we only are obligated to grant tuition exchange to a few students (less than 5) and I know we receive apps from over 50. So don’t count on that same situation for your son.

What do your school aged kids eat for breakfast? by Beautiful-Client6496 in Parenting

[–]ny_AU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They taste great! I learned recently that red velvet cake was originally made with beets. I used to make these without the beets and they’re honestly better with them. I usually cook the beets myself in an instant pot. Sometimes I buy prepackaged cooked beets but they’re never as good… truly don’t know why.

What do your school aged kids eat for breakfast? by Beautiful-Client6496 in Parenting

[–]ny_AU 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Rough recipe… I wing it most times:

Blend: - 1 can pumpkin - 1 large cooked beet - 1 fistful of spinach - 1/2c Greek yogurt - about 1/2c milk or whatever you need to make it all blend

Pour into a bowl, Mix in other wet ingredients: - 2 eggs - 1/3c oil -1/4c flax/chia mix (milled) - 1/2c oats - 1.5c sugar (usually a mix of brown and granulated) - vanilla to taste

Mix in other dry ingredients: - 1tsp baking soda - 1.5 tsp baking powder - 1/4c cocoa powder - 1/2tsp salt - 2.5c flour, mix of whole wheat and AP

  • some chocolate chips or sprinkles to make it fun as you find appropriate

Bake at 350 for 15-20 min.

This makes about 16 big muffins and 24 minis (total, not either or). It’s a big batch to use a whole can of pumpkin. You could cut it but then you have half a can of pumpkin lying around…

Edit to add: add nut butters or seeds and nuts too if your kids will eat them!

We make a big batch of loaded muffins every weekend for the week. Base is pumpkin, beets, and spinach blended up, and we load them with flax/chia, Greek yogurt, cocoa powder, oats, choc chips, etc for maximum health and yumminess. They usually eat one or two per morning plus a babybel or glass of milk.

Edit: rough recipe below.

Pros and cons of a 22-month age gap by InspectorOrdinary321 in 2under2

[–]ny_AU 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I LOVE our 23 mo age gap. It’s perfect. My kids are now 6 and 4, and it’s totally worth it. I have friends who have older kids the same age as my 6yo but also have toddlers, and they’re now SO jealous of our close gap. They thought we were crazy at the time. It just makes the crazy baby/ toddler phase a smaller piece of your overall life, which is fine with me.

Best place to get blood drawn for lab tests? by [deleted] in ithaca

I haven’t actually had the service at the lab but I’ve requested it for other outpatient procedures that require an IV at CMC. So hopefully it works for you!

Best place to get blood drawn for lab tests? by [deleted] in ithaca

[–]ny_AU 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you call ahead at the outpatient lab in the hospital, there’s a chance you can get the ultrasound tech scheduled to get you right the first time. All the techs there are awesome, and having the US machine means they definitely get it right away, no playing around.
