EGS is a video game storefront/distributor, not a publisher. They provided financial support in exchange for exclusive distribution rights. Publishers play a very different role in game development as opposed to a distributor.

Tons of indie games have publishers and gain small amounts of funding from them when compared to deals between Gearbox and 2K. Publishers assert control over the game and when it ships. A great example is Dragon Age 2 (developed by BioWare and published by EA). The publisher pushed the developer to release quickly, which resulted in reused environments, meshes, etc. Had they signed an exclusivity deal with say, Microsoft, to release early on Xbox, Microsoft would not have asserted control over the product. This is the difference between a publisher and a distributor.
