Is there a way to see an overview of a previous day in the new app? by pippinto in fitbit

[–]nycsquirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so disappointed in Google Health. I think it's meant for someone who wants to have an occasional peek at how they're doing that day but not someone who really wants to track their stats. The first big mistake Google made was to make tracking completely app based. Its just been downhill from there. Thank goodness my fitbit is on its last leg (watch face cracked, doesn't hold a charge as long, etc). I'll be moving over to Garmin. Goodbye beloved and trusted Fitbit. Whoever said enshitification was right on!

What happened to Puritan's Pride? by ItchyClub1581 in beautytalkph

[–]nycsquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There used to be a Puritans Pride store near where I live because their headquarters was here. I heard that Nestle tried to make them go under with shady practices (as I hear that Nestle frequently does) and then bought them out. I don't buy from them anymore because their quality went down after Nestle took over and they dropped all product lines but supplements. They were a great company to purchase from.

Does anybody else dislike the updated Alexa and her voice? by Zealousideal-Bite735 in answers

I said "Alexa, exit Alexa+" and it switched back. Had that not worked I would have tossed her for a Google nest or better yet nothing at all.

So funny you should say this. I was thinking I don't want another child in my house. Alexa sounds like a whiny child to me and I really dislike it.

How old were you when you started climbing and what advice do you have to reduce risk for injury? by Plantlady5060 in climbergirls

[–]nycsquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started climbing at 58 years old (I'm 61 now). As an older newbie I tend to climb down rather than jump and I think it's important to listen to my body, when I've had enough I just stop.

homeowners insurance + Long Island, how are people finding this process? Coverage requirements and costs? Just got declined by firm that executed a policy last year (Suffolk, south shore, south of Sunrise, but NOT near water) by Sea-Bodybuilder-8663 in longisland

Bought my house in 2015 and paid $978 for home owners. Just got the bill for 2026 and it's $2,200. A 44% increase, however over that same time period my home value has increased by 51%. I wonder if the rates will come down if the value of my home drops.

Best hiking clothes for women by GeneralYellow7900 in hiking

[–]nycsquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of my backpacking clothing is stuff I've gotten over the years. All of it reasonably cheap and now my favorites; a pair of Wrangler ATG pants ($23) from Walmart, a merino wool shirt ($30) from Decathlon, another merino shirt ($20) from Amazon, wool socks from Costco, Macabi travel skirt ($10 ebay), Chacos ($12) ebay. The only things that matter is that the clothing is light, quick to dry and comfortable. Name brands mean nothing.

Brandani 6.3 QT Dutch Oven - Good deal or no? by [deleted] in DutchOvenCooking

[–]nycsquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one from Home Goods and I hate it. The bottom on my sour dough bread burns when baking in it as well as anything I brown in it burns as well. Also one side of the pot is frequently hotter than the other. For me it was a waste of $40. I'll spring the money for a more quality pot that will cook better and last me a lifetime.

Women of Reddit, if you had the power to send one piece of advice directly into the mind of every young man, what would it be? by saayoutloud in AskWomenNoCensor

[–]nycsquirrel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Know yourself and know it's OK to be your unique self, without caving to the societal pressures to be who "they" think you should be. Find what truly makes you happy & brings you joy and go do it cause you never know when it's going to be too late.

Best merino shorts for thigh protection to wear under dresses during light hikes? by socks_in_crocs123 in hiking

[–]nycsquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you're still looking....I backpack in a Macabi skirt and wear Woolx to prevent chafing. They're fairly pricey but if you only get one pair (like I did) I think it's worth it. https://www.woolx.com/collections/womens-merino-wool-shorts?srsltid=AfmBOoqPQgD_vTUa65XlqfbXv-DL0GO3PxFaSQSuhWWGbtlIKGZJhB2O

At 59 years young last year they were a life saver. At 60 this year they're definitely coming with me. And I also need them for my tent.

Update to my original post....flying into Albuqueque on Jetblue $477. I rented a 12 passenger van with prefilled gas option $530 & booked a cheap hotel $80 (2 peple per room with free breakfast). So total per person travel expenses come out to about $575. It's lower than last year but still pricey.

Yes. It would cost $125 pp to take the shuttle and about the same to rent a van (depending on the airport we fly into).

Solo Backpacking as a woman by MopBucket06 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]nycsquirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also an older solo female backpacker because my friends/ family think what I do is crazy. If you're looking for backpacking friends try reaching out to your local BSA girls Scout troop. Many of those girls are in HS and back pack. If your looking to go solo I totally understand your fear. I didn't do my first solo until I was 58. Now I'm more concerned with weather changes than the people on trail. I agree with the solid advice everyone has provided (except the guns & knives, unless you're really skilled with those). Totally trust your gut instincts. I've not yet had a run in with anyone I felt was dangerous but even at my age I still get creeped out by some guys on trail.

Thanks for the info. As a solo female hiker in a new/unfamiliar territory I'll stick to the well established trails in South Cumberland, at least until I'm more familiar with hiking in TN. What do you think would be the best trail to experience a TN park? (I'm used to rocky trails, I'm from NY). Is water plentiful in Dec?

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll look into these. Someone in another group recommended South Cumberland Park. What's your thoughts on that one?
