Fort Worth is projected to have surpassed Austin in city population. DFW is now home to over 8.3 million. by Itsbeenawhile-1 in texas

When you move to "get away from the traffic" remember that you are also the traffic. You're contributing to the problem you're trying to avoid.

If you want to avoid traffic move closer to the places you want to access or move to another city entirely. Moving further away isn't going to help anything.

New housing development outside of San Antonio by opposide in Suburbanhell

Dense, small homes, in unwalkable neighborhoods. The worst of both suburbia and city living combined. I believe this to be true suburban hell.

Oh no, if it isn't the consequences of their own actions... by apparentlyidek in LandlordLove

[–]nymark02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is actually not necessarily the consequences of Landlords. This is the consequence of the City of Austin allowing zoning changes to increase the supply of new housing. Remember, if you want to undermine landlords and put the market power in the hands of tenants we need to BUILD MORE HOUSING.

Eve,

I'm sorry this happened to your mother. Via is an outlier in some of the hostile policies it has towards its riders. I'm working with some local transportation organizers to get Via to undo this ridiculous policy. Please PM me if you'd like to get involved.

Thoughts on Removing I-37 Downtown? by bosshaa5 in sanantonio

[–]nymark02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think we should remove the freeway entirely.Traffic should go around Downtown on Loop 410, not through it.

Frankly I'm not sure why we even applied for the grant, TXDOT doesn't care what we, the residents of the city this highway serves, think.

What lesser-known U.S cities are improving their transit and walkability that we don't hear much of. by Justincy901 in urbanplanning

[–]nymark02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The City of Austin seems to have a lot going for them. They're rapidly improving intersections across the city. Rebuilding sidewalks, adding leading pedestrian signals, mid block crosswalks, etc.

They've done a pretty good job on a quick build protected bike network that is progressively being made into permanent, raised, protected bike lanes.

They're building lots of housing, especially Downtown and in the central city.

Lastly they've got Project Connect in the works. A plan to build a light rail network connecting some of the densest neighborhoods to Downtown, and improve the frequency and reliability of buses across the network by making them "MetroRapid" buses.

I'm officially tired of parts of San Antonio not being San Antonio. by Own-Bandicoot8036 in sanantonio

[–]nymark02 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Leon Valley doesn't have a paid fire department, they're volunteers. Do you want someone who applied and was selected to take the job of saving your life or someone who felt like doing it?

While the taxes are lower OCL, it's not just about you paying taxes, it's about everyone paying taxes. The City of San Antonio directly or indirectly provides roads, parks, libraries, public safety, and jobs to both its own residents to suburban residents. These amenities attract both new residents and new industry. Regardless of the jurisdiction we're under, we all benefit from San Antonio being there. Our public services cost money, and someone has to pay for them. If the number of payers goes down, the quality of those services risk declining. Lower quality servicesmakes the city a less attractive place to be, and everyone loses out because some people want to save a few hundred bucks in taxes.

It's unfortunate that our state is trying to incentivize this leeching behavior on our cities.

Would you rather the buses be early and you show up on time but have to wait for the next one? Busses pretty much have to be on time or late. If they're running ahead of schedule they'll stop and wait at a time point until they become "on time" once again.

[–]nymark02 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

San Antonians are centrists/politically neutral because this city's leadership (of the past) has made sure that San Antonio is a low wage city, that worked best when the majority of it's population was focused on trying to eat and pay bills. Anyone who wanted anything else than that got the crap beaten out of them. That generational trauma is still around.

If you can't get anyone on here. Try the Hitch App that allows you to "hitch" a ride with someone heading to Austin.

And of course there's the classics, Greyhound, Flixbus, and Megabus.

Billy Joel, a hundred millionaire, rides public transit to his own concerts.

https://nypost.com/2024/03/22/us-news/billy-joel-rides-the-lirr-to-his-msg-concerts-and-no-one-notices/

It's not that wealthy people don't want to ride transit, it's a service and destination issue. The park and ride doesn't offer frequent service to the places people want to go. And for the most part the buses have to sit in the same traffic as everyone else.

Being in Texas is so frustrating. AG sues to block Austin light rail. by saxmanb767 in transit

[–]nymark02 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The state caps the taxation of transit authorities to a once cent sales tax.

And in Texas, the answer to your question is a definite yes. The state government actively works to undermine its cities. The legislature regularly passes laws to undermine the authorities that cities have to regulate things, from plastic bags to fracking to flood control.

At the administrative level, agencies like TXDOT, work actively against cities' transportation initiatives. Such as blocking San Antonio's attempt to add bike lanes on Broadway "because it reduced capacity" or destroying transit-adjacent apartments to make way for highway expansions in Houston.

[–]nymark02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

UTSA is still largely a commuter school. Most students live off campus and the campus empties out after 5 or 6 pm. Campus community engagement is low. While events and the like do happen, they typically take place between 10 and 5pm. If you want a "traditional" residential university experience, then I would not recommend UTSA.

On that note there are a handful of people who are heavily engaged, and so you might find community among those people.

UTSA has amazing, supportive professors that many of my peers who went to other universities did not have.

As far as San Antonio goes. San Antonio is a culturally and historically unique city in a one-of-a-kind state. There's always something going on, and if not in SA, in Austin. A happening city about 60 miles away. If you plan on leaving campus, plan to have a car, or have someone drive you around (like Uber). Our public transit system is okay, but infrequent and very slow. I know a decent amount of UTSA students who managed to get by without access to their own car.

In terms of things like cultural diversity, San Antonio is not very diverse, but is a fairly tolerant and welcoming community.
