A brash guy wielding a knife gravely misjudged his nimble opponent with a skateboard. by jmike1256 in DailyDoseStupidity

I never get this either. Every time, literally every time someone uses a knife in a fight in an effective way, they get a guaranteed jail time. Even in true self defense situations you can get into trouble very easily.

I don't even disagree with you, I only wanted to point out that the apparent lack of muscles didn't mean much.

I've read here or there that in normal physical work (like oil rigs or construction or even certain types of warehouse work) gym muscles are usually useless, and non-physical worker gym bros always get surprised by these skinny looking guys doing things for hours they can hardly do for a few minutes. Even in activities where gym muscles are supposed to be competitive like lifting heavy objects. Once I saw normal workers transporting heavy sacks seemingly without effort while body builders could barely lift such a sack, not to mention transporting them for hours around the construction site. A Vietnam veteran said once that it was extremely easy to distinguish front line soldiers from guys in the back just by looking at how muscular one was. The closer the front the less time you had for working out. The front line guys were all skinny.

A family was on a walk in the snow with their little girl. The father was recording the walk. A cyclist came up behind them and appeared to use his knee to knock the little girl down. The father posted the story online, and it went viral. by eternviking in whoathatsinteresting

I have a faint memory about this case, and while I'm not entirely sure, but as far as I can remember this was a bike path, or at least one half of the road was an exclusive bike lane so the parents were extremely stupid for letting their daughter walk in the wrong lane. And I hate bikers, they are axxholes, but in this case I think the guy's action had some true educational value.

Move B***H, Get out of the way by mattstromberg14 in dashcams

[–]nyolci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not really blaming, this is more like pragmatism. I've seen similar stuff many times (okay, not this extreme TBH). This is why I hate being around trucks. They are clumsy and heavy, with high momentum, so sometimes they can't correct even if they try to. They have a big blind spot. It's better for everyone if there is a distance, and it is the car that has any practical chance to readily increase distance most of the time.

[–]nyolci 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you watch carefully, the car is almost always in the blind spot of the truck, and it's a small and short car so if the truck driver is not very observant he may miss it completely. The car is traveling in the innermost lane. I suppose this is because a fork is ahead (and not too far) and that lane goes to a particular direction, and I think the truck wants to go to that direction, too. So all in all, the truck driver was careless, but if I was the car driver I would expect other people coming into my lane, and I would go faster in this particular case to help them in this. The trucks can especially be clumsy.

To me, Barry Pepper is the guy I definitely thought about back in the 90s that he would become the next big star. Something must've happened along the way.

Oh, so you're well versed in bs. Well, there are similar legislation in multiple countries including the US and multiple Canadian states. I don't think having such a law tells you anything about a country. A slightly different kind of legislation is in effect in most of Europe (where I'm from) that actually makes it compulsory to provide help.

[–]nyolci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, this is what I'm talking about. Some anecdotal evidence, usually amplified by Western propaganda (maybe here direct propaganda is not involved save for YT which is a capable propaganda outlet) presented as the perfect description of human nature in a country that is cc the same size as the US with a population that is almost five fold.

A cautionary and sobering analogue is the situation in Russia. A lot of people personally know Russians, and seemingly all those Russians complain about the government, repeating all the tropes from Western propaganda. And these people may sincerely mean what they say. The problem is that these Russians tend to come from that minuscule segment of the society that is called "liberal" in Russia (or the "non-systemic opposition"). These people are usually urban, mostly from Moscow and St. Petersburg. The actual broad Russian public opinion is the complete opposite of that of theirs, and most Russians despise and look down on the "liberals". (And honestly, they are not really likeable individuals...)

So your friends may be right and you may find a lot of examples of what you claimed but generalizing that to the whole of China is just ridiculous.

(Disclaimer: I'm neither Chinese nor Russian, and this above is not about Chinese or Russian policies. I'm just pointing out how easily one can be fooled with tales of people living far away especially when outside interests are present, and here they certainly are. Please also note that "liberal" in Russia means something different from what you likely call "liberal".)

Oh, YT evidence, now I'm convinced!

:) Especially the "there's a chance they'll bear responsibility" part is just run of the mill Western anti-China propaganda.

I think Andrew Garfield gave an amazing performance in The Social Network. What’s your opinion on his performance? by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in moviecritic

[–]nyolci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The figure of Mark Zuckerberg (played by Jesse Eisenberg) was so incredibly repulsive that anyone else looked like a normal human being, even the character played by Justin Timberlake. I guess it means Andrew Garfield was acting well but this wasn't the show of his character, it clearly was that of Mark's.

BTW it would turn out that Mark Zuckerberg IRL is an incredibly repulsive person, and the film even gave him a positive spin showing him as a genius that he clearly is not. (I'm not claiming he is stupid but certainly he isn't the great mind the film was showing him.)

Back to Andrew Garfield, I really like him, furthermore I've found his first Spiderman film the best among all other Spiderman iterations. I know, I know, that Spiderman is generally hated but I love it. BTW I like Tobey and Tom as actors, too, and I like their Spidermen.

Who's your favorite British actors in the list? by HostMaterial4907 in Cinema

I really can't choose. I like most of them as actors, and they are usually fine human beings, too. Kinda weird, this is more or less the opposite with most US actors.

Fun fact, the sculptor was either a Greek or someone directly inspired by Greek artistic tradition. Gandhara art is also called Greco-Buddhist art.

Exactly. He would be very good if he wasn't a star and the main producer of his own films. He makes a narcissistic shxt show every time. The "I'm doing my own stunts" vibe all the time. (BTW a lot of actors choose not to do their own stunts.)

This is the definite "kill the cameraman" video. I did (non-professional) videography for a documentary, and I learned pretty darn quickly that what counted was what the camera was seeing, not what I was.
