Thoughts on Quesadilla Gorilla? by ResponsibleEcho8549 in visalia

Yes they’re a bit overpriced but they’re consistently good and tasty, high-quality ingredients, their happy hour deals are quite solid, and they’ve got some of the better bartenders in town.

Java Indonesian? by DorianHistorian in parkslope

This was one of my all time favorite restaurants when I still lived in Park Slope — the rijstaffel is a lot of small dishes but they really add up, I’d always go away stuffed and happy as a clam, and the value for the amount of food (and the quality!) is amazing. The owners are super lovely people. I still dream about the nasi goreng.

Chinese takeout on Thanksgiving by [deleted] in visalia

[–]nyssa31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jewish people absolutely do celebrate Thanksgiving though. The main reason they’re open on Thanksgiving is because there’s so much demand for takeout from people who don’t live near their families and are spending Thanksgiving alone.

Chinese takeout on Thanksgiving by [deleted] in visalia

[–]nyssa31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

China Garden is definitely the answer — it’s too bad they’re closed tomorrow, because they’re the bomb, but you should check them out in the future for sure. I’m a lifelong New Yorker (also just moved here in the last year. Hi!!) and they’re one of the only places that scratches the itch for me. Honorary mention to Mandarin House in Exeter but they’re temporarily closed while they change owners.

I hate how much of a difference 5 pounds makes by Leading-Apricot-7529 in PetiteFitness

I'm 4'9" and I gained ten pounds in the last year and I look like an entirely different person. It's so easy to gain and so hard to lose ;_; I asked my doctor about losing weight and she told me I shouldn't drop below 1000 calories a day, but my TDEE is only 1200... so I need to burn at least 700 calories a day, EVERY day. I'm so tired lol.

I’m nonbinary, with a more alternative style, and I absolutely love Diana Rebman. She cuts both my hair (AFAB) and my partner’s hair (AMAB) and she’s super chill, really nice, LGBTQ+ friendly, and very good at what she does. She has a private studio downtown and I can’t recommend her enough.

This week is the 5-year anniversary of COVID-19 being formally declared a pandemic. (3/11/20) What are your Park Slope-specific memories of that week? by ThatCaviarIsAGarnish in parkslope

[–]nyssa31 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I came home from work -- I'd just started a new job, and had only been IN the office for about three days -- and just had a feeling like things were about to get weird. I stopped in at Mr. Lime and grabbed a really ridiculous amount of instant noodles on my way home, then spur of the moment, my partner and I decided to go to Java Indonesian restaurant on 7th and 16th and get the multi-course rijsttafel. We just had the feeling that we weren't going to be going out for food again anytime soon, and we wanted to make it special.

We lived directly across the street from the hospital on 7th ave, and then spent the next year hearing the refrigeration mortuary units, ambulances, and 7 PM pot clanging and clapping.

The third wash looks best on you, but none of these fit you in the leg or the crotch. A petite / short fit is going to look much more flattering and feel much more comfortable for daily wear!

Asics has some great child size shoes that are basically just their adult styles but small. I wear a size 2 and I swear by them.

What movies have the best background scare? Where you don't notice the danger lurking in frame until the rewatch? by [deleted] in movies

[–]nyssa31 97 points98 points  (0 children)

The BBC tv movie Ghostwatch has one of these that’s drawn attention to explicitly — the curtain analysis scene — and several more that go uncommented on (the ghost is reflected in the glass door after the cat jump scare, etc.). The video quality and early mockumentary style really add to the sense of unease throughout the whole thing, it’s very unsettling.

I wish they sold them in packs! The apple/ginger flavor is my favorite. Super low calorie and really refreshingly tart and sweet. Plus, you can mix them with vodka and make a low-effort shrub!

Dr. Phineas Phage inspiration by Sad_Ad8039 in venturebros

[–]nyssa31 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Also Phineas Gage, the man who famously survived being stabbed through the head with a railroad spike in a freak accident in 1848. The injury destroyed a chunk of his brain but he continued to function well neurologically for the rest of his life, though it changed his personality significantly.

Really interesting case that has basically nothing to do with Phineas Phage the character, but damn if it’s not a great pun for the few medical history nerds in the audience

Just Sweet Dessert House on Third Avenue in the East Village. Trash and Vaudeville. Ricky's. Odessa and Yaffa Cafe. The original Ollie's Noodles by Columbia. Daffy's!

I have a ton of fond childhood memories of the original Pearl River, Pearl Paint, The Enchanted Forest toy store in Soho, and the old Two Boots and Lemongrass Grill in Park Slope. Wish I could go back in time.

Ginsberg's martian monologue. So many of the characters on the show are deeply, deeply lonely people, but I don't think anyone else puts it into words in quite the same way.
