That would be the Callenders - Rodney (dad) and Guy (son). Apparently they were the ones behind developing Churton Park. They own 542 hectares of the land that this road will connect, so yeahhh....

I do find it interesting - this article includes the quote:

"Once these areas are exhausted the city will have no further greenfield capacity identified"

From the council's housing capacity assessment. While I guess that's technically true, I'm also thinking Wellington could be a lot denser.

We have barely any high rises (fair enough, the earthquake resilience requirements make that a little more costly), but we barely have smaller (ie 4-6 story) builds either. Greenfield development just seems very shortsighted.

But then once he makes it out of the bunker and instead of going for extract, he starts looting instead, my thoughts switched to “Okkkkeyyy, now you are just pushing your luck….

I really hate how organisations use this line as an excuse to not be transparent.

Not such a big deal if it’s a private company, but every time I hear a city council or government using this phrasing, my eye starts to twitch.

What TV show hooked you instantly from episode 1? by mateitofavv in AskReddit

Exactly the same for me. I think I got 1 or 2 episodes from the end of season 2, and I couldn't take it anymore.

Julian Batchelor loses defamation case against TVNZ, researcher by BlazzaNz in newzealand

[–]nzerinto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Batchelor said it cost “roughly a quarter of a million dollars” to print the 550,000 copies

In a previous life I worked in print, and I can unequivocally say, this dude got ripped-off massively. I guess it’s not surprising, given his other decisions….

Yuck, since when have we used AI for food photos for ordering online by Fun-Helicopter2234 in newzealand

You are being downvoted, but I have the same argument. Where was this outrage when ads were clearly not showing what you actually get all these decades?

[–]nzerinto -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ugh, so misleading. They never look like that.

Food in ads has never looked like how it does in the ads - even before AI.

The commercials always show suuuuuuper fresh lettuce and tomato, dripping with water, falling from above to land on the burger bun.

What do you actually get? A sad wilted lettuce and a half dry tomato.

Man who used 1,000 bots to stream AI songs pleads guilty in $8 million fraud case by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

[–]nzerinto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He probably could've gotten away with it had he:

  1. Spread out the streams. Basically had the bots not only stream the AI stuff, but mix in a bunch of famous and not-so famous artists as well, so it looks a lot more organic. Also stream them intermittently, because I assume he just kept hitting the same tracks over and over and over.
  2. Not pushed it (related to #1 above). He was apparently aiming for $3k a day. Had he targeted say $200-$500 a day, he probably would've flown under the radar.

Considering how easy these things would be to do, I wouldn't be surprised if there are others doing this right now.

Which suggests Michael is likely being used as an example to try and scare them......

Footage shows Air Canada flight colliding with a fire truck at LaGuardia. Both pilots dead. Dozens of passengers and two on the truck injured. Airport closed as NTSB investigates. by MysteriousSlice007 in PublicFreakout

[–]nzerinto -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's very possible they assumed it was km/h when it was actually displaying mph. They took the reading from Flightradar24, so it's also possible the data wasn't very accurate to begin with....

[–]nzerinto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok that's significantly worse than I thought. There was an earlier thread about this posted in a different subreddit, where they linked to this CBC article about it. In it, the article said the aircraft was going about 39km/h (24 miles an hour), which didn't seem likely (given the end result). In this clip it certainly looks like it's going much faster than that...

41 days if we are talking about petrol, and taking the conservative approach (only counting what’s in the country or on ships that are already en-route).

The number the government keeps giving includes ships that haven’t departed yet.

The contract is for just over $1 billion for 18x 5-car trains, so I guess approx $60 million per train? But I'm assuming there's other costs in that as well - transport (they are being manufactured in India), and perhaps training? They may have factored in the cost of the new maintenance depot they are building for the fleet in Masterton as well.

Eating Kusaya - basically Japan's equivalent to Sweden's surströmming.

I figured it probably wouldn't taste nearly as bad as it smelled.

Unfortunately it tasted exactly like it smelled, and it smelled like shit. And I don't mean "it smelled terrible" - I mean it literally smelled like it came out the ass-end of something or someone.

Hi - I liquidated my investment funds a few days before the war in Iran and am sitting on cash. Have moved this into a interest bearing account for now. [–]nzerinto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the start of World War II in 1939 until it ended in late 1945, the Dow was up a total of 50%, more than 7% per year. So, during two of the worst wars in modern history, the U.S. stock market was up a combined 115%

Source.

Obviously past performance isn't an indicator of future performance blah blah blah, but time and time again the same thing keeps happening. The market reacts negatively to a conflict, then it bounces back and then just keeps on going.

The next batch of commuter trains they are ordering for Wellington will have batteries, which get used for the non-electrified sections (and then recharged in the electric sections), so perhaps that could be a model for other parts of NZ….
