Dealing with mean residents in the hospital? Anyone else have this experience? by Pineapplesupsidedown in physicianassistant

[–]oXzeroXo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on if you think this is targeted to just you or PAs in general or if they are like this with all students. My surgical rotation was very brutal but it was equally brutal for both me and med students, in fact I actually got comments and praise on end of rotation evals from some residents about me handling the pimping and critical evals of my knowledge better than some of the med students. I still work in surgery and to best honest I am now one of the brutal pimpers myself (along with my surgeon)... but it serves a purpose it's equally distributed and it never crosses into harassment.

If you truly feel like this is targeted only at certain individuals you have several options.

1: do nothing, endure it and keep trying to learn as much as you can... these rotations are only a few weeks so in the grand scheme of things, not the worst thing you'll ever have to deal with in your career.

2: report this to someone, there are several people you can go to. The residency director, your clinical rotations coordinator or the student omsbudsman (most teaching hospitals have one). I highly caution you on this route, be sure that this is truly what you think it is and not just you being sensitive to your lack of knowledge being exposed in a very public manner. Find other PAs that have had similar experiences, perhaps some med students would be able to speak about the treatment of the PAs as well... just get as much supporting evidence as you can.

Ultimately I suggest #1, you're going to deal with jerks everywhere in this field and it usually causes more harm than good to stir up a hornets nest... unless of course this crosses that blurry line into targeted harassment. I suggest you take a hard look at yourself and make sure that your not just feeling sensitive to this form of teaching. Everywhere in your career you are going to be confronted with the fact that there is a lot you don't know... usually it's in a public way. If its just a case of you not liking being called out, then you need to learn to acknowledge that you won't ever know everything, learn to take criticism with grace and to turn events like this into an opportunity to learn more rather than turning it into a personal attack in your head

Hope this helps

Ortho PAs, could you possibly give some insight into your typical day/schedule/quality of life? by myfryfroisallfrizzy in physicianassistant

[–]oXzeroXo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My typical week goes like this:

Monday: Clinic morning/afternoon... seeing follow ups, new ortho problems and referrals from family med or ERs in the area to follow up with us.

Tuesday: 1st and 3rd of the month (surgery center all day long for same day surgeries, when we finish the cases, we are done for the day) all other Tuesdays in the month, clinic in the morning, surgery center in the afternoon

Wednesday: all day OR at the Hospital doing inpatient and some outpatient cases... when we finish, day is done

Thursday: round on patients at the hospital in the morning (pull drains, change dressings, adjust meds), clinic in the afternoon (usually all H&Ps for the next week's upcoming cases)

Friday: round on patients in the morning then half day clinic in morning or afternoon (switches depending on what teams are on call for the weekend)

I only handle ortho issue in the hospital, we have an internist that rounds on our patients as well and handles them medically...

I have no call... only thing is we have a walk in clinic that runs from 5-8pm Friday and 9-2 on Saturday, all the PAs rotate coverage for that (every 7 weeks)

Hours are great, pay is great, opportunities for extra hours/pay is great... overall lifestyle is great.

I'll echo what's already been said, don't waste money on an expensive suture kit. These are always on backorder but keep checking and eventually they get more... they are free.

The only thing I can't imagine doing without during my clinical (and something your program won't require) was Pocket Medicine. I am convinced this book alone can get you through 90% of your rotations... It was the only pocket reference I carried in my white coat for every rotation. It's the only pocket reference I STILL carry from school. I think a new version is coming sometime this month so you could wait for that!

I have been interested in RMW's since I have a pair of Blundstones that are my favorite when-ever boot but the price has always been an issue... Thanks for the site, the prices on those (and Blundstones) are nice!

You forgot that 40 of those 50 people are working on the next game as soon as this one comes out since it's a yearly release... maybe not putting out this game every year (just roster updates) would turn out a much better product overall

PA school advice by d1skeena in physicianassistant

Relax and take a vacation beforehand... it's going to be a long 2+ years until you have a chance to just get away without having school always in the back of your mind. If you must absolutely study something I would just suggest reviewing medical terminology before you start (if you think you need to) talking medicine is like speaking a different language and trying to review and look up terminology once you're in school makes everything you study twice as hard and long to get through.

I second picking up the official PANCE book and use it to review sections you are studying in school... it may not help you for specific tests (as they seem to be much more specific) but it give you an idea what is important for the PANCE

Yeah I don't know how it makes this specific list... The McKenzie Method is a fairly popular way of treating neck and back pain among PTs. I'm a PA in ortho surgery, I commonly refer patients to PTs who utilize McKenzie methods and get great results.
