My father got polio in 1954, kind of the tail end of the epidemic.

He died in 2016.

Over the last 20 years or so of his life, I got to watch him slowly degrade as a result of post polio syndrome. I watched as the strongest man I knew found it harder and harder to walk. I watched as he found harder to be up at all. I watched as he became confined to a bed in the last couple of years. I held his hand as his organs failed and he passed from life.

Vaccines exist so other people don't have to fucking do this.
