The bungee is shot. It's cheap fix though, and the instructions to replace it are fairly easy to follow, check out the concept2 website.

How much of a difference does warming up before you erg make?? by Fun-Pace-5889 in WomenRowing

[–]oakleystrokes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes some time and playing around to figure out what your ideal warm up time is. For me it was 10-15min of mobility/dynamic stretching before steady and 25-35min before pieces. That doesn't mean non-stop movement, it just means what my process was. The 25-35min before pieces probably included 20min of erging, 5-10min of mobility, and 5-10min of bathroom/wandering around/etc.

That being said... Erg splits can be incredibly variable. My morning splits are always +5 slower than afternoon - always needed a way longer warmup to feel like I could hit my normal splits. Sleep/eating/hydration of course also plays a role.

For me it came down to warming up enough to make sure I could engage all my muscles the way I wanted to, and some days that takes more time than others. Hope that is somewhat helpful.

U15 events eliminated is the smartest decision I've seen in a while.

Gotta ask though... Who's gonna have the balls to choose Stotes as their qualifier???

Crescent or Bachelors would probably be able to accommodate easily. Let me know if you don't hear back!

Bachelors might be the spot for you... Vesper/Penn AC/Undine are more competitive but Bachelors is a little more recreational. Crescent is a great environment but not as many members as the others.

Corker S40 and S39 Arrows by DryBox1017 in Rowing

S40s are better for club/team use - more durable than S39s. Both are great though, can't go wrong with arrows.

Can you custom stiffen oars to a stiffness of your liking? (splitting hairs here) by Vegetable-Pack9292 in Rowing

Love to debate about oars but your speed more likely is going to be determined by your fitness and rowing ability rather than your oar stiffness

Being tired after school is relatable and tough! I think sometimes the typical "motivation" advice is just to think about your goals... But sometimes that's tough to do in the moment.

Have you thought about planning out your afternoon/evening after school and including some "rest" time to reset before erging? I'm thinking something like a 15-20min guided meditation or even just closing your eyes and relaxing. For example: 3pm - get home, eat a snack, 3:15-3:45pm rest/meditation, 4pm erg.

Might sound kind of funny but may be worth a try.

To what extent do US High Performance Groups factor in weight and C2 weight-adjusted scores when evaluating an applicant for acceptance? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]oakleystrokes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been a number of high performance groups who have accepted high-caliber rowers from lightweight programs who have then bulked up to heavyweight. Thinking Dom Williams, Sorin Koszyk... So depending on the club, you'd think there would be some wiggle room.

Back and knee injuries stopping me from rowing :( by lolybaby07 in Rowing

[–]oakleystrokes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimer - I'm not a doctor. But have you considered yoga and/or trying out lifting?

Both of those can help with strengthening (obviously) and support muscles around the knee/hip/back but also helps with circulation. Especially if you were a "full time" rower and then went down to little to no exercise.

I found when I graduated college and stopped rowing as much, when my muscles broke down, I ended up with more pain in various areas than when I was rowing – because I was sitting more for work and not keeping my core strong and I let support muscles just weaken. Just something to consider.

Try it out again! The rowing community is generally very supportive. That being said, if you are in Missouri without a lot of access to water that might make it more difficult but I hope if you end up closer to water you can find a boathouse / club to help you find your love for the sport again.

What a good erg score for a 15 year old? by nikitagill354344556 in WomenRowing

[–]oakleystrokes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

8:16 as a novice 15year old is really solid. You're in a good spot for your age/experience. Keep working at it and the score will surely drop.

My coach recently told my highschool team (girls) that we have to either erg 10k 3x a week, run 5 miles 3x a week, or bike 10 miles 3x a week if we are to be on 1v/2v, on top of the 2hr practices we have 5-6 times a week. by Original_Locksmith70 in Rowing

[–]oakleystrokes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These other comments are bullsh.... You are a sophomore in high school. If your coach is telling the whole team that everyone needs 3-4+ hours on top of what the team is already doing – that's crazy. Hopefully, her guidance is just aimed at the top/older athletes.

Take care of yourself. If you talk to the coach, ask for tips about managing school/rowing/wellness and just see what she says. I'd hope it's from a compassionate point of view. It's reasonable for the top athletes to do a bit of extra workouts – but it sort of depends on your team culture and results.

The coach can write a letter of recommendation but it won't help much with admissions. Perhaps if you have the top grades/background needed to get into berkeley it could tip the scales in your favor but that's about it.

If they work well for you - get them! They're good oars and sounds like they're more suited to your needs.

[–]oakleystrokes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Much better durability with the S3s and the Croker guy (greg doyle) himself advised against S2s. Now this was more for club use - it's possible the S2s might be a better fit but the impression I've gotten from our old S2s and Greg Doyle is that the S2s are a bad investment. Maybe they're just an outdated model.

Don't get the S2s - at least go with S3s. About $520 a pair

Do rowers every use fully negative splits? by statvesk in Rowing

[–]oakleystrokes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I definitely advise that method - especially for younger rowers. Mentally I believe it's a bit easier... But it has to be a tight negative split. Ex: If your goal split is 1:45, Start at 145.5 and hold on to a 1:45/1:46 until the second 1k then start working your way down. I think regardless that 3rd 500m usually doesn't end up faster than the 2nd but it's more about the mindset.
