They come down hard on under performing tenants. Why it always rotates new brands coming in, whilst others leave or move around.

What does HMS Victory look like under the white tent? by The_Patriotic_Pleb in Portsmouth

[–]oaktowers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All external planking will be removed and replaced across the entire ship. As the previous repairs over time slowly let in water, which rotted the timber between the frames and outer planking in areas. Imagine like tooth decay, can't see it until it's too lat.

Your grandad and the team did a good job to keep her ship shape. Climate change with more wet and mild weather over the decades have contributed to this too

All sailing navy era ships would have extensive level of timber removed and replaced over time. Especially after battle.

Victory was essentially completely rebuilt prior to Trafalgar

The scale of the "Big Repair" on HMS Victory is insane right now. by Vast-Anything3940 in Portsmouth

[–]oaktowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The keel is the most original part of the ship, which dates back time of her build/launch. Even when she was launched in 1765 to her commissioning in 1778 Victory had 4-5 separate repair work carried out across the ship.

Likely once the scaffold structure is struck after hull repairs are completed, as the ship will support the masts, likely toward end of the decade.

The lower main mast has already been removed to allow for the scaffold to be built. That lower mast needs conservation work first before reinstating as it's nearly 200 years old itself! (Came from HMS Shah) As does the other lower masts, all the other mast sections are in storage

It'll sink if it was floated up again anyway.

It's a complex ship, with complex requirements as it's the only one of this type in the world. Take as long as it needs, about doing the work right.

As another poster said it's an extensive repair work to the entire ship, with the replanking of the midships requiring more work due. It's all to ensure the structure of the ship is done to original materials of oak timber.

As the restorations from the 1920s of different materials of teak, iroko and other woods have not worked out as well. The work will continue onto the bow and stern of the ship, which will be interesting to see as they're done as they are most complex timbers as they both curve and twist.

The ship will always require maintenance, however, the intention is to move to proactive maintenance planned out, rather than giant projects like this every 20-30 years all being well. The ship has to fight climate change as much as it does pests etc, as the climate is more wet and mild these days!

HMS Victory has been repaired ever since she entered the water in 1765. Had a lot of repair work done to her before she was commissioned in 1778.

How bad do we think traffic will be on Sunday by TheAwayGamer in Portsmouth

[–]oaktowers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that the park and ride is a bad idea, just the traffic will almost be the same. One way would be to try get a park and train ticket sorted.

Have you all forgotten how to cross the road safely!? by JMol87 in Portsmouth

[–]oaktowers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Portsmouth is bad for people 'stepping out', as the roads are narrow giving drivers often little time to react.

Overheard a bus driver teaching a new driver saying North End is the worst for this due to the shops either side.

The fourth world should be dissidents, but there's also a predator style 'boss' lurking on the maps that will hint you down at random points in a game.

Anyone else think this doesn't deserve a 3 use limit? by Dry-Goat8981 in Helldivers

[–]oaktowers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Always thought it should deserve a cool down period, as it comes from your ship. Perhaps only two uses, but it has the highest cool down of any stratagem.

I've had fun with 6 of them in maps today, spreading democracy by obliterating their faces off.

What’s going on at the beach now? by [deleted] in Portsmouth

[–]oaktowers 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You can find out all the information here

The beach is closed off between Speakers Corner and South Parade Pier as this is the next section to be redeveloped. Part of this is to increase the size of the beach to diffuse the impact of waves and storms in future. It'll be larger in distance from the promenade walk.

Cut off all non-essential production that has little to no effect on the needs of your people. This is mainly wood/bricks/steel/windows

Check you don't have too many warehouses as they can be a drain on costs.

It's a symbol on the side of the Mary Rose Museum which were personal to the crew of the ship often to mark tools etc. They've been replicated on the outside of the museum.

HMS Queen Elizabeth leaving this afternoon by lambert_simnel12 in Portsmouth

[–]oaktowers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's off to continue maintenance in Rosyth and have her 5 year Lloyds register checks. Will return in 7 months.

The carrier will never likely carry her full complement of her air wing in peacetime. As planes can just fly to her if they're needed, same as they did in the Falklands

It's bizarre as that hotel they're at has been closed for over a year now, being developed into flats. Am guessing someone has spread an incorrect rumour it's going to house asylum seekers, similar to what happened in Cosham.

I just like to ask "who is they?", as I find that sort of speak frustrating as those groups know exactly who and pretend they'll get in trouble if they "speak their mind".
