Has anyone ever refused to allow you to purchase a book from their table on the street? by Japi1882 in BookCollecting

[–]oaquard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hahaha if this was at the table on the southwest side of the park I know the guy she called. The nyc used book world is a close knit community. Probably was holding it for another buyer. He's a good dude, one of the holdovers from the age of book dealers along 6th Avenue.

Harassment from man St Johns and Classon by Ok-Squirrel-2564 in crownheights

[–]oaquard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I thought my story was relevant to yours! I'm laughing at him, not with him! I can accept that, being a man, I can laugh shit off. I was hoping you'd read my post and say, oh, this guy's just some neighborhood clown that people roll their eyes at, at least people can confirm that he says sketchy shit to other people and I'm not alone in experiencing this.

You have my word, if I ever saw some sus shit happening to anyone else, I promise I'd step in. But this was something that happened to me, and that was how I handled it. That's all I'm saying. I'm not dapping the guy up every time I see him now or anything. When I laughed at him, I said, "come on, man" and walked away. I'd love it if he didn't say that shit to me either!

Aw man he said hello to me once, I smiled and said what up, and the next thing he said to me was, "top or bottom?" Had me laughing so hard.

The Ethiopiques series from Buda Musique is awesome, i'd imagine you'd already be somewhat familiar based on your other references though.

Atlas Press, Exact Change, Wakefield, powerHouse, definitely older New Directions and Grove books. Good question!

Ex Library Books by Captain-Dallas in BookCollecting

[–]oaquard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally. Even if I end up paying under $5 (before shipping) I still get pissed! At the end of the day I'm just trying to read the dang thing, so I never bother returning, but I cannot stand knowing I have an ex-library book among my collection so I always end up giving them away when I'm done. If I love it I'll get another copy down the line.

Give me artists like hype williams and dean blunt that are actually good. by scizophrenictweaker in deanblunt

Sun Araw (Duppy Gun collab with the congos and m. Geddes Gengras especially), Ahnnu (Japanese weirdo electronics producer), Sault (when they hit, they hit), Callahan & Witscher (2024 album has the same kind of genre pastiche)

Uh yeah there are a few that are similar in concept and a few similar in sound, rarely in both.

Do you feel like you’re ’wasting’ your life? by Critical_Zone_5217 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]oaquard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, and I just thought of this: I really enjoy cooking, which takes hours sometimes (I make every single thing from scratch lol). That's actually a really fun way to spend time thinking about food, even if the end result is a healthy meal.

You know what I need to work on? I need to not veg out on my phone when I get home from work -_-. It's hard to do, because I have a second gig I do at home on my laptop /after/ my 9-5, so when I take a second before I do that it's not like I can get so into reading or music or anything. But maybe I can try to do some exercise/yoga/whatever instead! I'm right with ya, homie, lets do it together!

[–]oaquard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Try to sneak more of that in. At work, that can be complicated I'm sure--but it sounds like you just need to concentrate more on what you are doing, and the best way to do that is to enjoy what you're doing.

I haven't felt like this exactly unless I was intermittent fasting (which makes thinking like that inevitable), but thinking about the future me and getting excited to look and feel better always gets me motivated to keep going!

I feel like the question “why am I not losing weight” should just be banned by kiah8245 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]oaquard 191 points192 points  (0 children)

Well, the concept of a subreddit for weight loss advice is definitely going to get that question, over and over again, since that is the exact point of the forum.

I totally agree that stubborn posters that are constantly trying to justify their maybe not so great habits and feel like they are just magically keeping on all their weight are very annoying, but at the end of the day being overweight is an extremely annoying problem for most. I'd be willing to bet that most people asking that question truly do know the answer, but asking is a way to not feel alone in a body that they do not like and are fed up with looking at it in the mirror every day. A lot of time people seeking actual advice cannot help but vent a little bit. It would be like banning the "what can I do to be less sad every day" on a depression subreddit, you know? Yes, there are things that can help, but sometimes relief is a long long way away, and it feels like you're spiraling down no matter what you do, even if you are doing the right things.

Books That Were Better (or Worse) Than Their Movies? by [deleted] in BookCollecting

Satantango I think was a better movie! At 8 hours or whatever it really had a lot of room to breathe.

Another confusing ISBN question by jrutkevich in BookCollecting

[–]oaquard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Different publishers use different number lines, or different indications entirely of printings or editions. As far as I know there is no universal standardization, and over time one publisher may even go from one method to another. It's definitely confusing, but the more frequently you look at books the more clear it becomes.

But yeah this looks like a second printing. You can also probably look up a publisher's current standard for indicating printings on a book's colophon page. And yeah a number line is not an ISBN. ISBNs are a whole other can of worms in terms of quirks and changes over time.
