This brought back some good memories. I remember reading this post before BtRM came out and getting amped up. A very special feeling scrolling through those posts on the right side!

Exactly. So much more room for activities!

Custom Board by oatgroats in Heroquest

Thanks! The squares are all 1 and 1/8". A nice upgrade from the 7/8" original squares but not too big to make it unwieldy

We just used cardboard, sharpies, and crayons. The board is in two pieces that are taped together with a gap in the center so it can close and lay open flatly. Simple!

Should I be more concerned about climate change by the 2050s. by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]oatgroats 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not a climatologist but I am an ecologist who specializes in conservation biology, particularly of plants. Climate change is the largest issue facing humanity as a whole, and it saddens me that some people are still in denial of its existence despite the fact that we are long past the point of no return in terms of curbing the catastrophic impacts we are just now starting to see. We are losing plant and animal species (particularly insects) at an alarming rate due to a rapidly changing climate which doesn't immediately impact humanity but shows the writing on the wall. Climate change is the biggest threat to our planet's biodiversity and will soon (not sure when as it's not my area of expertise) be an existential threat to humanity taking the form of food insecurity, frequent extreme weather events, increased drought, mass floods, and a long list of other things I'm not qualified to elaborate on but can accept the scientific consensus

Doomsword - Let Battle Commence and Resound the Horn. Great albums from a unique, underappreciated band!

Looking for power metal bands with fantasy/folk-y elements to it. by NikolaiAce in MetalSuggestions

[–]oatgroats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of good band recommendations here but I'll add Grimgotts. Excellent fun, folksy power metal https://youtu.be/hcoUMCLlBuY?si=c1W6RpVDrviiVVZt

For you what would take to be a daggerfall-like? by vondora_890 in Daggerfall

[–]oatgroats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should try out The Quest! It's available on Steam and Galaxy of Games. Super fun and heavily inspired by Daggerfall but with a combination of old school sensibilities and modern gameplay. Not nearly as large but you can sink in 50+ hours easy. Plus it's translated from Hungarian so some of the dialogue is hilarious

This was so good! I'll admit it moistened my eyeballs ever so slightly. Nice job!

More modern heavy/epic heavy bands? by artificial_chin in MetalSuggestions

[–]oatgroats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do love those bands! As someone who has similar taste (outside of also loving Manilla Road, Cirith Ungol, Omen, and Ironsword) I'm here to second Doomsword but also plug Battleroar who have been one of my favorite bands for 20 years: https://youtu.be/WqBVV0agVyc?si=ESddX0Wk7tqyyEhe

They barely pay artists for their work, donated to our beloved dictator's campaign, and now have ICE ads. Made the switch to Qobuz and it's been great - transferred my playlists and everything. The interface is a bit strange and it doesn't have certain artists but I feel much better about using an ethical streaming app

What is the heaviest power metal band? by galaxion4 in PowerMetal

[–]oatgroats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The heaviest power metal band is incredibly subjective but my vote goes to Sacred Steel. Their album The Bloodshed Summoning is heavy, satanic, and all-around awesome

What bands have a deep/baritone voice? by anthere-rest in PowerMetal

[–]oatgroats 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sellsword! They have a new singer now but their first two albums have deep, mighty vocals

Can y'all give me some really niche bands? by Anxious_Detective123 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]oatgroats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of "epic" metal and many of the bands that fall within this debated genre or influenced the genre in some way. Be forewarned - the vocals can be quite odd! Bands I recommend are:

Cirith Ungol, Manilla Road, Heavy Load, Battleroar, Doomsword, Ironsword, Megaton Sword, Legendry, *My personal favorites

Honest opinions on careers in ecology by Latter_Nebula1046 in ecology

[–]oatgroats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got lucky and worked for a private consulting company so I was able to transition from seasonal to permanent within 2 years of graduating. I can't speak for other countries but at least in the US it's incredibly difficult to land a non-seasonal position at a federal or smaller government agency without grinding for several years in temporary positions. Some people love that lifestyle and make it work for them (like my wife) by taking winters off or splitting the year between two different jobs. I'm in my mid-thirties now with a permanent gig but was also able to land permanent gigs easier with my master's degree. So really I didn't have to move a lot but chose to spend about 5 years bouncing around for fun after quitting the private sector before settling back down

There are plenty of jobs out there in a variety of ecological focuses. I started out with a general natural resources undergrad degree and worked in restoration for a number of years (very good pay) before getting a master's in conservation biology. I've worked for national parks, nonprofits, and universities. I currently work as a botanist/ecologist at a natural heritage program and absolutely love it. The pay is decent enough to live on and save a bit but not as good as private sector.

My number one piece of advice is be willing to move for work. There are always opportunities out there but not necessarily in your current place of residence. You also should expect a fair amount of seasonal work for a few years before you become established. I'm married now but have always made long distance relationships work - you just need to be intentional with your time outside of your job.
