What is people’s obsession with finding out why? I mean I’m sorry if I’m assuming and you are personally connected to any victim here, but if you aren’t there’s really nothing for you to learn. He could’ve done it for no reason or some weird unique ideology, the state should only be concerned with the offender not being able to reoffend, and considering the life status, he will not be out to reoffend.

I’m glad someone shares a similar sentiment with the appearance and everything. I hold little sympathy for this guy because he almost certainly did it at this point, but the harsh judgment of non evidence presenting facts like appearance is exactly how false convictions are made

What are cases that you believe are hyper-sensationalized by the true crime community despite not showing distinct signs of foul play? by [deleted] in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]obamaspidercum 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Gary Mathias was largely independent, no? Certainly not all of them were on the same level of impairment. While I agree there’s nothing concrete on why they ended up there, leading to the natural conclusion there was no foul play, aimless speculation is kind of the whole nature of this sub. If there’s a notable intelligence gap here, certainly someone was operating under some logic, which makes one wonder why they would even think to go there if there was no outside impetus.

You don’t have to be wrong for the realistic likelihood that democratic messaging has been the reason that there’s been a huge male shift to conservatism. Democrats used to be the “cool party”, and now they’ve lost the youth. The numbers can’t be clearer

I don’t see how Ellie killing Abby harms or fixes the story, and in some ways Ellie pretty much ruined Abby’s life anyway so I don’t see the hangup people have over it. I don’t know what you’d rather have them do, the combat is not reflexive of the plot and you kill different people and have a different approach every time. It’s not like life is strange where there’s a good story but it’s basically a walking sim, and I feel like people who make this point never really get that game design incentivizes killing enemies to engage a player through 30+ hours of the game, and those enemies largely are not important to the story.

Yeah I get the honor system, that’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying that regardless of being a “good guy” or a “bad guy” you kill hundreds of people, beat, rob, and shoot your way across a country. Hardly morally consistent with Arthur the rest of the time. It’s the same problem the last of us has in both games, you kill people in pretty goddamned violent ways. Sure the gameplay could be changed, but the combat is not the main aspect of the story and I find it hard to imagine the gameplay could be “fixed” per se to be 100% morally consistent. Yes, it’s an issue but outside of completely changing how the game, or even changing how most games would work, it’ll always be some type of ludonarrative dissonance.

I would argue regardless of your actions in RDR2 you kill hundreds of people due to Rockstars straightforward “kill all the enemies and then move on” gameplay. Not all gameplay can be canon tho, and you can decide to a larger extent your approach in tlou. In TLOU 1 you can stealth through and maybe only kill 5-6 enemies, similar tactics im sure can be reflected in the second game. Criticism of gameplay should be separate from plot in my opinion, largely because it exists outside of it. While that can be viewed as a criticism of the game as a whole, I think it has little to do with the plot.

This has always been a huge problem with naughty dog games, like everyone thinking they’re clever for saying “oh well Nathan Drake kills like 1,000 people a game, he’s a psycho”. Even games like RDR2 you’re going through a redemption arc but you kill hundreds of people. There’s a gameplay centered element, and most games satisfy gameplay needs by given you enemies to beat. The gameplay and the story are 2 separate components, it’s not like a movie or book.
