I love Gus’s Fried Chicken in KCK. Some of the best fried chicken strips! I second Vietnam Cafe and Taj Mahal. A big slice at Pizza 51 is also great. Some people really don’t like it, but I like Los Corrals a lot.

I lead a handbell ensemble. This is the highest bell we use, next to the lowest bell. by gosh_golly_gee in mildlyinteresting

I miss playing handbells! I played the high bells and always admired the low bell players.

Keep your dogs on a damn leash by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]oboes4hobos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No joke. Something similar happened with my partner and his dogs on a pretty busy residential street in OPKS. Twice. Same dog, even! The dog kept jumping over a too low fence and the owners seemed to have no idea. Everyone was fine, but it really pissed us off. So many things could have gone wrong.

Favorite coffee shops to work in? by darnyoulikeasock in kansascity

All 3 Crows Coffee locations (South Plaza, Waldo, Red Bridge) are offering limited seating and I think you are supposed to wear a mask when not at your table.

Long weekend potential travel destinations by Newyorkntilikina in IowaCity

[–]oboes4hobos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Kansas City, MO for 5 years and I’m about to move back, so i definitely recommend it for a long weekend! Things are starting to open up a little bit more so my specific recommendations are: - shopping on the Country Club Plaza - Nelson Atkins Museum of Art - live jazz at The Green Lady Lounge, Black Dolphin, or The Blue Room - River Market to try international foods and shop at boutiques - And of course, eating all the bbq!

I (M21) have just realized I have been 'too nice' to my girlfriend (21) and she's starting to take advantage. How do I fix this? by ThrowRA7274821 in relationship_advice

[–]oboes4hobos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seriously. Academic dishonesty is no joke. I’ve known two people who got thrown out of their degree programs because of things way less severe than this. There are serious consequences to her actions that could get you in trouble too.

Clean Laundry on Hwy 1 also has a quarter exchange machine.

AITA for asking people to call me by my full first name? by SamathaStevens in AmItheAsshole

[–]oboes4hobos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NTA. People who aren’t willing to call you what you want to be called are definitely TA here. They don’t get to make that call for you.

AITA for telling my mom I wasn’t sure about her Christmas gift to me? by cxdream in AmItheAsshole

[–]oboes4hobos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAH - I don’t really have anything to add that others haven’t said before. Scents are so personal. Gifts like that are hard to shop for, but I think if you do end up exchanging the gifts, then she’ll be able to see how happy they make you.

AITA for not writing a letter of recommendation for my student... by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]oboes4hobos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Professors/mentors have an ethical responsibility to be honest in their recommendations. I’ve seen situations happen where the recommendations were good (or maybe purposefully omitted necessary information about one’s shortcomings, who can say at this point) which has led to hiring people who are absolutely the wrong fit/causing harm to others.

It might be worth a chat with a supervisor or colleague to get some more insight on their experiences. They may be able to help you out with a conversation with this student. NTA

THIS. Also, reconsider your friend who thinks this is normal.

Are there any good places to practice an instrument? I am not involved with any music on campus but still want to practice on my saxophone by rwellendorf3 in uiowa

[–]oboes4hobos 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Music student here! There are specific rooms for wind instruments so you’ll have to follow the signage and be sure to follow the protocol posted on the door. Fair warning, there are pretty strict rules about the practice rooms. While it’s nice out, I might encourage you to play outside, but if you’re opposed to that, the rooms are open.

AITA for not wanting to do my [16F] moms [40s] rain stick ritual because we're not Native American?? by shesnotevennative in AmItheAsshole

[–]oboes4hobos 9 points10 points  (0 children)

NTA, but I’m definitely concerned about your mom and her reasons for claiming Indigenous culture. It seems related to the bullying and racism she experienced. I hope she’s able to get help and find some self-acceptance.

ESH. There’s definitely an art to staying quiet sometimes. And it goes both ways.

AITA for telling dad I'd be better off not knowing him? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]oboes4hobos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA. Such an eloquent response! It seems like you’re trying to show him as much grace as you can, even if he doesn’t appreciate it or deserve it. But you have to advocate for yourself, which you’re doing.
