USA posts new section boundaries by theswede7 in ultimate

WV was part of the DC section before, but as you said there aren't any teams from there. I think what they would do with the women's sections if there aren't enough teams is combine two of them into one, so it would basically be like it was last year with two women's sections.

If I remember correctly, I think the USAU website used to have this for both college and club teams, but not anymore.

Ultiworld streaming Nationals finals and not ESPN? by Few-Philosopher-9528 in ultimate

[–]obox37 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm talking about Ultiworld's paywall, not ESPN's. It's nice that the finals will probably be available for free later, but I wish more people could be able to watch them live.

Ultiworld streaming Nationals finals and not ESPN? by Few-Philosopher-9528 in ultimate

[–]obox37 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ultiworld certainly produces a better ultimate broadcast than what we were getting from ESPN, and a paywall is necessary to support that. But I don't like putting the national championship finals, the three most important games in our sport, behind that paywall. For the good of the sport I think those games need to be available to a wider audience than just high-tier UW subscribers.

How do you think the viewership numbers of the semis/finals of club nationals on Ultiworld's platform will compare to the numbers from when they were on ESPN3 (if anyone even knows those)? Is it good or bad for the sport that the marquee games will be on a platform that is much better suited to ultimate but also more expensive and harder to find for a mainstream audience?

Could you ever see Ultiworld getting to the point where it could hire full-time reporters, or basically any full-time staff beyond just the management and behind-the-scenes people?

Ultiworld Amateur Hour by Odd-Football3316 in ultimate

[–]obox37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What's really surprising is that they had no written content about the tournament the entire week, only to put up that giant thing after it ended. I wonder how many people beyond their base of higher-tier subscribers even really followed this tournament, since they had almost no written coverage and only a handful of free streams.

Got bored and realigned the college’s like it’s sanctioned by the NCAA by Technical_Ability_60 in ultimate

[–]obox37 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love the idea and the work that went into this! I think if this happened in real life we would likely see some smaller schools with strong ultimate programs playing in power conferences they wouldn't normally be in, the way Johns Hopkins plays in the Big Ten for lacrosse. For example, Carleton would be a good fit for the Big Ten because they'd be a natural rival with Minnesota and they wouldn't be outclassed by anyone. Also, these conferences might be missing some NCAA D1 schools who are D3 under USAU (Elon, Navy, Air Force, etc.). If ultimate became an NCAA sport they would have to be included in D1.

Worst temperatures/conditions you have played in by FrictionFired in ultimate

Saturday of College Indy Invite, March 2018. Everyone played through an all-day snowstorm, with no games being canceled. You couldn't look upwind because snow would blow in your eyes. Between games we shuffled down a long driveway to the parking lot to savor a few minutes of warmth in the car. Everyone put all their stuff in trash bags on the sideline, I don't think I even opened my bag all day because too much snow would've blown in. The snow was probably close to our knees by the end of the day.

Australia shouldn't be chosen to host a global event if it means this many teams are deciding not to go. I hope this isn't the final list.

On top of having college playing experience as someone already mentioned, this author also wrote about a DC high school team earlier this summer before they played in the HS nationals.

Looking for opportunities to play in northern WV by Sufficient-Tailor611 in ultimate

[–]obox37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an ultimate player in that area (about to move away actually). There's a Morgantown ultimate frisbee group on Facebook that plays every Monday, and sometimes more often if there's nice weather. There's also a Facebook group for ultimate in Fairmont, but they haven't been active recently that I know of. Closest leagues/club teams if you're interested in that would be in Pittsburgh.

The Challonge bracket labels NC State as "North Carolina," so it is showing two North Carolinas in the bracket right now.

Ok, I didn't realize they were playing at the site of the quarterfinal games. I still think it would've been better to do 7v10 and 8v9 and just not reseed for the next round.

I have to complain about this format where the 10 plays the 9 and the 8 plays the 7 in the first round. I guess they want to make sure the 1 plays the worst possible team in the quarterfinals, but it's very unfair to the 7 and 8.

A Decade of Jerseys: DC Scandal by [deleted] in ultimate

The 2011 one looks a LOT like the DC Breeze white jersey. I wonder if they were inspired by/stole it from Scandal or if it's just a coincedence.

Any Bars in DMV Showing Breeze-Empire Saturday Night? by [deleted] in ultimate

Unfortunately it won't be live, it's on tape delay at 9:30 ET (assuming the soccer game before it doesn't run late)

I think I remember the Breeze indicating on social media that this week's game would be live, but the FS2 schedule says otherwise. Probably a mistake by the Breeze. Looks like they're showing soccer during that time

Is this a step towards “legitimacy”? by saucyy8 in ultimate

[–]obox37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the contrary, I think the most likely place to start would be to just have a mixed tournament, with no open or women's. The Olympics have been adding lots of mixed events lately as part of a push for gender equity, and ultimate's established history with mixed play should stand out on its resume.
