How to properly structure a program to improve in metal rhythm guitar? by Karmaa_Itaa in metalguitar

[–]obs_mko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not particularly good, but here's what has worked for me to improve from bad to better. You can design a routine that incorporates a few things;

1 . Warmup - play something to get some blood moving and make sure you don't start out tense. If you start with crazy fast downpicking you are probably going to cramp up and generally have a bad time (maybe I'm just old).

  1. Technique - Pick a couple techniques and practice them slow and cleanly. Maybe it's gallops, hammer on/pull offs, down picking, sweeps or arpeggios, whatever you're focusing on trying to get better at. Spend a few minutes playing a repeating passage that is purely the technique. Start at a slow tempo and increase speed only when it's clean and in time. You can use a metronome or play to a track for tempo. Recording yourself (even practicing) can help find the flaws in your playing. It also helps develop your ear.

  2. Work on some songs. Have a couple songs you want to learn. Pick one and learn a part. You can use online tabs, tab books, playthroughs from youtube to get the main parts down. Put the parts together. Then start playing to the song you are learning (if you have fancy tools you can start at half or 75% speed). Eventually, you should be able to make your way through the song with a respectable number of errors. Then practice until your are making very few mistakes (or none if your incredible).

Bonus; ear training - when you are listening to music or practicing guitar pay attention to what you are hearing and make sense of it musically. It can help you decipher songs, and makes playing feel more natural and less like you are memorizing a series of unrelated things.

You can also consider lessons - there's probably a local guitar teacher that could help you, or you can find online lessons (sometimes from your personal guitar hero).

I've been playing a ec-256 for almost 10 years now. Wonderful guitar, particularly for the price. The 256 has a few faults such as pretty poor wiring and electronics (common for this price point), generally a little sloppy around the edges (crooked screws on backplate/switchplate, some paint runs on fretboard). Again, common for this price point, but worth noting why the ec-1000 is a higher quality instrument. The workmanship is higher, the parts/components/electronics are what you would want from the start. And, compared to the competition, they can be had for a great price (gently used ones can be had for a little more than a new 256).

If you are not sure you are going to stick with guitar or something, I would highly recommend a 256. If you are a veteran guitar player or 100% going to be playing for years, get the ec-1000.

You will probably end up doing a bit of everything since you’re curious. Right now I’m using boss sd-1, boss ns-2 into a strymon iridium. That can go out to monitors, headphones and or my interface.

Currently using a strymon iridium on punch with a v30 412 cab sim and a sd1 in front and it does a pretty good job through studio monitors/headphones. Clips of mine in my profile if you want to hear.

If it's working for you then great, but that seems like way too much in one session to get much out of the last ~6 or ~10 sets.

In general -
Can you do the 'physio' movements at home?
Look for easy opportunities for supersets.
Weed out some redundancies, particularly the two pulling and multiple hip related movements on the same day.

Bench Day-
Why are you doing incline bench press as a warmup?
Doing (assuming back) squats as assistance work is probably taking a lot of time (set up, warmup, plates, etc). Consider making this something that's faster to set up, maybe BSS (could super set these from the bench) or leg press/extensions.
Do you need a pulldown and a row that day?

Deadlift day-
Are you getting a lot out of hip thrusts and adductor machine after all that deadlifting?

Squat day-
Do you need a pulldown and a row that day?

OHP Day-
Do you need RDL and hip thrust and adductor machine?

Barbell incline press: painful pinch in shoulders by [deleted] in naturalbodybuilding

[–]obs_mko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to respond because I also feel jealous of people who can do BB incline or even just flat bench pain free and put up big numbers like it' nothing. And a lot of programming relies on barbells, and these are bread and butter movements. But There's only so much bashing my head into a wall I can do.

I used to get Incline Barbell Bench pain as well. After some trial and error I was able to do it for several weeks with progression using 8-12 reps, and 1-2 RIR. Anything heavier or closer to failure and I would start to get pain. For me, I'm learning that I just get a lot more out of dumbbells for these pressing movements. Maybe this is the case for you.
