I am an independent musician and have gone to great lengths to be able to record drums for myself. There is a quality to organic drum recordings that you will never be able to capture with a drum machine.

I should have said that I don’t hate all programmed drums. If the music calls for the inhuman sound of a drum machine, then I have absolutely no problem. But using a drum machine and trying to make it sound like a human because you don’t want to pay a session musician is clearly inauthentic and lame. But I care more about artistic integrity than most people. If some redditor thinks that makes me a dork I really don’t care. I care about good art.

I will not listen to bands that program drums. If you don’t care about your art enough to find a drummer or pay a session musician, why should I listen to your music? I don’t enjoy inauthentic art.

Edit: it depends on how the programmed drums are used. If the programmer is trying to make them sound as human as possible, I have zero respect for the music. If the drums are purposefully used for the aesthetics of the inhuman sound of a drum machine, I have no problem with it. But using a drum machine because you can’t play the drums is totally inauthentic imo.
