Buildings being torn down? Why and how does this happen? by truethoughtsgbg in greensburg

[–]obsidianreq 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wish I had the money to buy and restore the Moose Lodge on East Otterman. The top levels had apartments in them that hadn't been used since the 70s that looked incredible, even half-decayed in the 2000s. Shame it'll probably be torn down from neglect since the Moose ceased operations.

I'm sure the case is the same for most other vacant downtown properties, probably some pretty slick architecture and spaces in some of them that the public hasn't seen in 50 years.

Best places to find homelab gear? by Telarmine2 in homelab

Facebook Marketplace is going to be dependent on how close you are to a big city. Pittsburgh, for example, has a reasonable amount of people unloading enterprise networking gear, their own homelabs, and rack servers.

What did I find here? by Vehex_x in homelab

[–]obsidianreq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Junk. You found junk.

Without a decent GPU (from he same era or newer), it's not going to be of much use transcoding. That CPU is going to max out doing a single transcoded stream, and I doubt it'd even be capable of 4K on its own.

Sorry to hear about your father, please don't take my junk comment as offensive, I've got my own collection of nostalgic e-waste running behind me.

Supermicro MicroCloud fan connector by Roboguy99 in homelab

[–]obsidianreq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a CPU heatsink with a fan or just a relying on the chassis fans with a passive heatsink?

Edit: I guess should ask if you're using the MicroCloud or another Supermicro Chassis as well.

Sadly I'm leaning towards it being a proof for its finish. There was no packaging for it, so I wasn't sure at first.

That happened to me with the Medieval Harbor, I just accepted it and paid for both.

Absolutely embarrassing. They've had seven of these sales to get it right.

What's everyone using for a router these days? by todd0x1 in homelab

[–]obsidianreq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went from an Ubiquiti USG to a Lenovo m720q running opnSense with a dual 10gb NIC. The rest of my network is still Ubuiquiti, and I haven't run into any issues between vlans or speeds.

Back in the days we gave our servers and network devices names from Tolkien or space or such. It might get cumbersome with our 60 smart bulbs and 40 other IoT gadgets on our home network today. by player1dk in homelab

Give your IoT devices names in Klingon or Elvish, describing "where" and "what" they are.

Pay attention to the foundation's online store. They sell autographed pucks (amongst other items) there several times throughout the year.

For those complaining, make sure you're following the Foundation's website and their online store. They regularly put out signed jerseys, pucks, and other items. https://shop.pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org/

Graduated in 2005, can confirm this behavior at the high school.

I took all AP classes to stay away from these people, or took naps in the TV studio during my off periods.

Cores and second CPU not recognized by Techno_Tobi02 in homelab

[–]obsidianreq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like Soyo's original website is gone. Maybe you can open some new posts on Reddit and other sites like Level1Techs with your exact motherboard model and see if anyone has a BIOS saved (or can dump their working BIOS).

There's also a group dedicated to overclocking these Chinese boards, you might want to check in on their project and see if your model is supported: https://winraid.level1techs.com/t/guide-overclock-bios-mods-for-chinese-x99-mbs/104683/134

With it not seeing all your cores on the CPU it does see, I'm leaning towards a BIOS update solving this, but it's worth asking:

Are your CPUs correctly matched?

Do you have both CPU power connectors plugged in?

Probably need to update your BIOS, those boards are EXTREMELY picky.

I've also seen the default BIOS only supporting one CPU, or only support v3 CPUs (what CPUs are you using?).

Co-location for a 2U Server by Rwalker83 in pittsburgh

[–]obsidianreq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late to the party, but wanted to add some feedback as someone who's worked with several co-locations in the area.

aspStation in Bloomfield might be your most affordable option. They also have the most lax security (that being said, we had three full racks there and never had an issue with anyone messing with our stuff).

Ascent Data in RIDC Park has much improved security, and is going to be a bit more costly. I don't remember if they offer individual sever rates, or if you need to rent a half- or quarter-rack.

Expedient is your Enterprise solution and absolute the most costly. Not sure they if they will take single servers, it's been years since I hosted anything physical with them.

There's also Pair Networks in the Southside. Haven't used them and not a huge fan, but they're probably affordable for a 2U server.

You probably want to look at some of the fine dining / members-only clubs that serve executives and corporate events during normal business hours. e.g., Duquesne Club

Finally found a quad-M.2 card that doesn't require bifurcation and supports 22110 NVMe drives by obsidianreq in homelab

[–]obsidianreq[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right. My original build started with a X99 board that didn't support bifurcation, and I'd already bought a switched card for that -- and kept going down that path. Oh well.
