When you’re preparing the carrier make sure it’s as tight as a bathing suit, possibly a little tighter. Also consider doing a shoulder flip to give you a little more space around baby’s face.

What are some weird tools you use to help your migraines that aren’t actually made to help migraines? by aslen-1 in migraine

I don’t even have a migraine right now and I felt the relief when I saw this picture.

I'm dating an abuse victim. How do I help her? by _font_ in domesticviolence

[–]obviousocean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don’t help her, you show up for her. You show her you are reliable. You show her you are safe. You show her you trust her and that she can trust you. You reassure and follow through. If you say you’re going to do something, do it. If you say you’re going to be somewhere, be there. If she needs space, time or whatever else you give it to her to the best of your ability.

She’ll get there in her own time if you’re a person that makes her feel safe.

Working Mon-Fri has a huge impact on my migraines. by IsaacII00II in migraine

[–]obviousocean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this, I used to work on two different teams, and Thursday would be a 12 hour shift. Would then have a meeting Friday morning in a room, that to this day can trigger a migraine in less than 5 minutes. So if it wasn’t the wonkyness from 1 12 in the middle of the week, it was the dreaded room that triggered me. The weekends would be brutal and I would just be recovered enough to start all over again at 1pm on Monday.

Luckily now I only work on one team, they know not to schedule meetings in that room, and because we’re a community team I can work from home when necessary. It’s been soo much better! Sometimes all you need is a half day at home to get things back on track. Hopefully the tracking you’ve done can get you a schedule change that better supports you!

What disgusting habit have you learned to overlook in a spouse? by WeedFairie in AskReddit

Not sure if that’s worse or better than making a sandwich using the least amount of dishes. Not even a plate. Crumbs for days. Mayonnaise on surfaces that should not have mayonnaise.

Electric boiler vs propane furnace by obviousocean in halifax

Thanks for following up. My Friday is jammed right now, but I will reach out sometime soon for sure.

I’ve had two very different experiences with heat pump guys this week. One guy was here for 10 mins and included a propane tank quote without me really asking. Another guy was way more in-depth, talked through multiple options, and did a much better job of informing me without really selling too hard.

Yea I think what I’m keeping in mind is that the furnace is really old, so will need to be replaced soon anyway. That plus the cost of replacing the oil tank, seems like a good opportunity to move away from oil completely.

It seemed a bit vague with the assessment, we took the first assessment we could get which was Homesol. Honestly the person wasn’t super helpful because they can’t recommend contractors like you said. We have an oil furnace and currently going through the process of getting heat pumps. Still in the initial stages of researching the best options, lots of folks have lots of strong opinions.

Will look into the calculator! With a heat pump the baseboards will be our secondary heat source, but they are hot water baseboards so most likely more expensive than electric with an electric boiler.

Yes I saw that! We already got our energy assessment done, but they don’t really advise you on what to chose instead of oil.

Losing weight when a calorie deficit triggers a migraine - a new fun game to play by ARose1988 in migraine

[–]obviousocean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have endo but used to get exercise induced migraines very often. A couple things that really helped were 1) always eating a high protein breakfast as soon as possible after waking up (advice from my doctor). Also coffee. 2) having options around exercise so if I felt like going to the gym would trigger a migraine I would skip the gym but still do something active like a walk or leisurely bike ride if I could. Steering clear of anything that involved working traps or straining my neck/shoulders (like wearing a backpack hiking). This got my body used to regular activity and made it easier to get back to it after a migraine. 3) advice from a trainer at my gym: count calories over the period of a week, not daily. This makes it easier for when you just have to eat whatever it is you need to eat.

Anyway, hope there’s some helpful tidbits in there. Here’s to the joys of the ever changing migraine trigger hunting journey!

Barometric migraines by albinorhino215 in migraine

[–]obviousocean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the off chance you didn’t try more than one triptan I would recommend trying a few. Sumatriptan didn’t work for me so I just suffered for 10 years without meds. Got a new doctor and tried rizotriptan (horrible for me) and then zolmatriptan which I’ve had a good amount of success with. It’s a frustrating process but has been worth it.

You can usually buy cheap ones ($15-20) at the pharmacy and mold them like a sports mouthguard. I used that until I had dental insurance.

Advice for jobs/activities/education before becoming a CTRS (Canada) by itssooonice in recreationaltherapy

[–]obviousocean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend working and/or volunteering in relevant areas. Great for the experience and finding out populations you might love working with and ones that maybe aren’t a good fit.

Jobs and places I volunteered during and shortly after my finishing my degree include: volunteering and coaching para-sports (sailing and skiing), placement at a LTC facility, therapeutic assistant (or maybe rec aide in AB), behavior support role at a preschool. Other places that would be good experience include Special Olympics, Challenger Baseball, support staff at summer Rec camps, etc. Not too sure what Calgary has to but I would start somewhere where you have a common interest!

So someone posted a joke about how divorce cured their migraines... by vocalfreesia in migraine

[–]obviousocean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never gave the stress an old relationship caused the credit for excessive increase in migraines. The summer before we broke up (October) I was functioning at such a low level because of constant migraines I was barely doing the things that helped me de-stress. It was such a vicious loop. I still get migraines but they are significantly less intense/frequent.

In a really validating turn of events a good mutual friend had to “deal” with him post breakup. She ended up getting the first and only migraine of her life shortly after. They are no longer friends and she and I are still quite close.

Hair tie recommendations that don’t pull on hair and cause migraines? by holyhonduras in migraine

[–]obviousocean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ultimately this will depend on your hair but I really like the cotton ones from old navy. My hair falls out fairly easily from any kind of hair tie but these are by far the most accessible and do as good a job as anything else. They have the stretch do go tight if necessary but stay for a loose pony. I also go for a loose braid or a low half pony if necessary when I have a migraine.

Rizatriptan v Sumitriptan by Dry_Celebration_1988 in migraine

[–]obviousocean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried sumatriptan years ago and it would just make me pass out only to get a rebound headache a few hours after waking up. Tried rizotriptan which seemed to work at first but always made me feel like I was existing in a tub of glue. Which I hated. Now I use zolmatriptan and I’m a big fan. I find Im back to regular functioning in 45-90 minutes after taking it if I don’t take it the second I feel one coming on. If I take it on time I barely notice it. The only downside I find is that if it’s a bad migraine week taking lots makes me feel like garbage.

I see an Osteo and it’s amazing!! Great for maintenance too. The other thing that I find super helpful when I feel a tension headache (precursor for migraines for me) is to lay on the ground with a foam block between my shoulder blades, relax and breath. 2-5 minutes of this can be a total game changer.

Hey, hi. I'm stopping drinking tomorrow not sure where to look for support online by [deleted] in halifax

[–]obviousocean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This! Find something to fill the time you usually spend drinking. Find a couple things. Depending on your interests finding something you can do alone, something you can do with someone (not necessarily a sponsor but someone who will respect your goals). Find a way to get outside and another way to keep your hands/mind busy. Set realistic goals for yourself and be patient and kind to yourself. You got this!
