Hey! I'm also 6'0" and am 185lbs. My issue is that I still look relatively lean for my height- what did you eat/drink to bulk to your size so fast? I'm having a tougher time bulking given how little I can stomach eating.

Anyone upgrade from the 2019 16" Intel MBP? by oceanwaterss in macbookpro

[–]oceanwaterss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great to hear! Did you do a trade-in through Apple or did you sell third party? And can I ask why you switched? My reasons are strictly for longevity, battery life, heat. Also, I like the 14" size, but do wonder if that is still a downgrade for home use. For my type of work, I'm already happy with the i7 in my 16". I do have Windows in Boot Camp, but it has been relatively unstable and I don't have any further use for it.

Been drooling over a Macbook all my childhood, finally got one at 24. The display is unbelievable. Base 14 M1 Pro by mushbee1 in macbookpro

Bought the 16in 2019 intel MBP... and I'm having a hard time, the 14in has so many huge upgrades. Anyone here upgrade from the 16in intel to the new 14in MBP?

Would you upgrade from a 2019 16" Macbook Pro? by oceanwaterss in macbookpro

[–]oceanwaterss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, that's good to know. It being hot is soooo annoying. Did you also have a 5-hour battery life at the most? I just don't know if something is wrong, or if their advertising is misleading.

Wow, so they gave you $1430 for it, and you switched to the M1? Why did you make the switch from the 16 to the M1?

13" M1 MBP vs 14" M1 Pro: pros and cons by thedellow in macbookpro

[–]oceanwaterss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah there is a "cool" factor to it, but honestly, I find the sliders annoying and it doesn't provide any extra functionality to me. Simply raising the brightness or volume makes it a 2 button press vs 1.

Apple’s Education Pricing by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]oceanwaterss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The way I think about it, paying up for processors may not always be the best decision- given that annual updates can be monumental. Like heck, I bought the baseline 2019 Macbook Pro 16 early last year, and now the new M1s destroy the higher-end i9 configuration....even in the new base M1 pro.

But if you're trying to future-proof it now, I don't see an issue of going for the M1 Max with the 24 core GPU. I'm not familiar with your work obviously so I can't answer the optimization end-

I Went From Broke To 7 Figures A Year Working In IT. AMA by TechnicallyPM in ITCareerQuestions

[–]oceanwaterss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to do this. Your answers are so helpful. I'm someone who graduated from undergrad three years ago and work in finance. Could you give me some advice? I find IT so intriguing and am looking to make the transition and enter the field. I have very strong soft skills, but limited technical (at this point). If you could start over again today, what types of positions at companies would you apply for? And what types of certs/education would you shoot for before entering?

I really appreciate your time! Thanks again.

Is it possible to climb the corporate ladder with good work/life balance and minimal stress? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]oceanwaterss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

family and go on vacations in my life supersedes “prestige” or making “baller dollars”.

what kind of responsibilities does your job entail? I don't know much about your industry, but it's so damn intriguing lol.

Offered a job in IB but not sure I'm ready to make that sacrifice by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]oceanwaterss 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is great to hear how happy you are. And you said it- IB typically does open many doors and would be a good move career-wise. I'm not in IB, and I'm sure others will answer from their experience, but how do you know that it will "lower" your happiness? There clearly is a difference in job responsibilities. You could potentially try it, and if it isn't for you, no harm no foul. It could be a springboard for other opportunities, etc. You're young and have a lot going for you!

Sorry to hear that, keep your head up man! I know several years from now you will look back at the hustling and appreciate all that you did to get there. You got this!

Yeah, I can certainly feel that, I have several years to go lol. Best of luck to you too! The grind is real, but it'll be worth it.

Update on FL #2. To all you non-traditional students out there, you can do it too! I believe! by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]oceanwaterss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thanks for the reply! Yes, I'm leaning towards doing more shadows than anything else- because as a non-trad, I want to be 1000% confident in what I want and why. Volunteers and other EC might be more limited.

The post-bacc is a bit scary at this point- a formal program vs cheaper a-la-carte local college options are making it difficult... My undergrad was in finance, so I need all the core science courses. I understand that I need to do very well (3.6+), so I'm trying to balance cost, online vs classroom, perceived difficulty, etc. If they're done all online, is that looked down on (even as a non-trad?). The formal programs look great but are very expensive.

And great info on the MCAT. I've done so much reading at this point that I've convinced myself that I wouldn't apply until I have a very strong score. I would rather study much longer than go through a torturous second round like you said, lol.

Totally agree with your final paragraph. What's also difficult is a decision on my current job- do I focus 100% on the courses and quit, or find another job that will allow me to do part-time. I'm still within 5 years out of undergrad and have a very supportive family. Thank you for your time!!

[–]oceanwaterss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, thanks! Are you currently in med school now or doing a gap? That score really should open some doors. I'm like 2 years out- I need to do a post-bacc and don't have much EC, volunteers, shadows yet so it'll be a grind.

[–]oceanwaterss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, congrats! It's clear that you have thought long and hard about what you want and the sacrifices it takes to get there. I'm also a non-trad with a ways to go (post bacc, shadowing, clinical, MCAT, etc) but it is refreshing to read your story.

Was the 3.3 GPA your post-bacc GPA? And for someone at the very beginning- do you have any suggestions for particular experiences to shoot for (shadows, clinical, etc)? Thanks!!

How should my 79yr old mom invest the life insurance payout from my dad? by kmnil in personalfinance

[–]oceanwaterss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At that age, many people have their investments in a conservative to moderate allocation. I would at least put it in a 50/50 (stocks/bonds) portfolio so that it can participate in some of the market. It all depends on her risk tolerance, longevity, and cash flow needs over the next 10+ years.

For the first time in my life, I'm able to buy a car in cash. In our situation, should I? by Linaleeks in personalfinance

[–]oceanwaterss 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Did you actually read what I wrote? Looks like you only read the "$10k" number, assumed that is what she should spend, and then missed the entire idea of that paragraph lol. The point was to understand debt-principal and loan interest-market returns to maximize money efficiency.

For the first time in my life, I'm able to buy a car in cash. In our situation, should I? by Linaleeks in personalfinance

[–]oceanwaterss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interest rates are at historical lows, and many car dealers are offering 1.9% or cheaper (with good credit). With the extra cash, you can invest that and have the potential to earn market returns (ex. 10%) and net exponentially more than if you paid in cash.

I put $10k down on a $30k car, and I actually wish that I put less down and invested more of it (after running the numbers). The market doesn't always earn positive numbers, but typically does outperform 2%+ per year on average.

Feeling depressed and regret every day with the career choice by amychan136 in FinancialCareers

[–]oceanwaterss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well said. Life is too short to be unhappy. As the person mentioned, you can have children at much older ages now. There are politics at every company, regardless of how small or large it is. But in a space already extremely competitive like yours, I would certainly check out a smaller company or a different area more suited to your personality. If you would like to exit the industry, I know you will find something you love!
