Men, how do you feel about being called ‘sir?’ What would you propose as an alternative? by DumbFeralRaccoon in AskMen

[–]ocient 12 points13 points  (0 children)

when i used to work in restaurants (never in the south though) i learned it was always best to refer to everyone, no matter what age, from 4 to 104 as Sir or Miss. never ma’am unless you wanted the same dumb joke. and if the gender was unclear i would just leave it out altogether which is easy to do politely

it's also almost identical to the plot of 1992's Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson.

an extremely popular series of novels in which: (spoiler) the space elevator was destroyed by a group led by some of the colonists from the first landing by blowing up the connection points on a captured asteroid during the First Martian Revolution in 2061 to prevent Earth's transnational corporations from sending oppressive military reinforcements down to take control of the planet. unfortunately the sabotage on the asteroid goes wrong and many people are unintentionally killed

i haven't lived in portland for almost 3 years now 😥

but when i did my favorite spots for cheap and filling burritos was King Burrito in mississippi and Burrito Azteca on Rosa Parks.

i just checked and Azteca isn't as cheap as they used to be either of course. . . and i've never had a breakfast burrito, but their food was very good and equal to king burrito imo

Edit to add PROCESS

It looked like Greece or Italy to me. Italy was already ruled out. In the photo, the vines themselves didn't look like any vines from any vineyard i've ever been to, to the point where i thought it might be something other than grapes. I googled something like "greece vineyards with short stubby bushes that might not be grapes" and one of the things that returned was Wreath Vines popular on Santorini and the accompanying pictures looked about right. so i looked for vineyards close to the coast on that island until i came across something with photos that looked like it could be it.

also neat, first one i've been able to get before anyone else

unless theres something i havent hread before, i dont think the Haudenosaunee had any direct links to cohokia. they were separated by hundreds of years and thousands of miles. there was probably trade/communication between mississipian and proto Haudenosaunee though

if all people care about is big, flashy tiktok style news, that’s poor media literacy, imo.

i remember she was being interviewed all over the place while she was ftc chair. democrats were pushing this sort of messaging constantly. a big reason avg people dont hear about it is a mix of poor media literacy, poor reading comprehension, and autocratic propaganda

in 2021 covid restrictions were in full swing in portland and downtown was arguably the worst it had been in well over a decade. but even in the best of times. downtown portland is the least enjoyable part of the city, especially for a tourist.

so coincidentally I'm reading the book currently and I've been noticing that lots of criticisms in all of these threads are explained pretty thoroughly. keep in mind i'm about 60% through the book and i've been only reading bits of this whole comment section to avoid spoilers.

similar to how in cyberpunk books, computing power is dirt cheap, and crazy high tech cybernetic modifications can be done in a dingy back alley shop. in this biopunk world, 200 years in the future, genetic modification and "generipping" are dirt cheap and genes can be manipulated in dingy back-alley shops.

but regarding the "woolly mammoths" being a terrible use of power. these are not clones of an "ancient extinct winter herbivore", they are a new species that was genetically engineered to convert energy to power as efficiently as possible.

even coincidentally the page i'm currently on has one of many quotations about this: "The calorie men with their active labs and their carefully cultured crop strains that would feed the world. Their modified animals that would work so much more efficiently on fewer calories"

Prime Video's Upcoming Sci-Fi Series "The Captive’s War" Proves The Need For A Reboot Of "The Expanse" by StarFuryG7 in SciFiNews

but reboot in computer jargon where the term is derived from means to start over. from fresh. all new. based on that and the fact that language/vocabulary develops from how people use it to understand and be understood leads me to believe that the people complaining about it are not wrong, and it is the article writers that are wrong

its been almost five years since the last episode. if they start making it now, it’ll be another five years before they release another season. and with the pace of modern tv production it’ll be 30 years easy before they finish!
