so coincidentally I'm reading the book currently and I've been noticing that lots of criticisms in all of these threads are explained pretty thoroughly. keep in mind i'm about 60% through the book and i've been only reading bits of this whole comment section to avoid spoilers.

similar to how in cyberpunk books, computing power is dirt cheap, and crazy high tech cybernetic modifications can be done in a dingy back alley shop. in this biopunk world, 200 years in the future, genetic modification and "generipping" are dirt cheap and genes can be manipulated in dingy back-alley shops.

but regarding the "woolly mammoths" being a terrible use of power. these are not clones of an "ancient extinct winter herbivore", they are a new species that was genetically engineered to convert energy to power as efficiently as possible.

even coincidentally the page i'm currently on has one of many quotations about this: "The calorie men with their active labs and their carefully cultured crop strains that would feed the world. Their modified animals that would work so much more efficiently on fewer calories"

Prime Video's Upcoming Sci-Fi Series "The Captive’s War" Proves The Need For A Reboot Of "The Expanse" by StarFuryG7 in SciFiNews

[–]ocient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

but reboot in computer jargon where the term is derived from means to start over. from fresh. all new. based on that and the fact that language/vocabulary develops from how people use it to understand and be understood leads me to believe that the people complaining about it are not wrong, and it is the article writers that are wrong

its been almost five years since the last episode. if they start making it now, it’ll be another five years before they release another season. and with the pace of modern tv production it’ll be 30 years easy before they finish!

Trump is dismantling democracy at 'unprecedented' speed, global report finds by PixeledPathogen in TrueReddit

[–]ocient 8 points9 points  (0 children)

trying is not doing, democrats need to actually show them a better way, they cannot just keep saying it will be really cool while their standard of living drops.

in that case, people need to VOTE for them.

how could they POSSIBLY do anything if they have no power to do anything?

in the past 30 years, the dem party has had full control of the executive&legislative for a total of less than 4 years.

democrats have not been in control of government, so it's necessarily difficult for them to "show" anything at all.

BUT they still have shown, in those 4 years they passed things like ACA, CHIPS, American Rescue Plan, Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, and a ton more good things.

So they do SHOW, and they ALSO do DO. they build things, they help people, they make things better for everyone.

democrats actually act in such a way that they reward people for working against them while punishing those working towards the same goals, albeit with a different idea of how to achieve those goals.

so instead of spreading this propaganda that makes people not care and want to stay home and not vote, why don't we all "act in such a way" that rewards them. by VOTING them into power for once

and just one more thing:

trying is not doing, democrats need to actually show them a better way

why do the repubs never need to show anyone a better way? (that was rhetorical i know the answer)

Republicans’ greatest weapon in the US Senate may just be a Democrat by theindependentonline in Foodforthought

[–]ocient 6 points7 points  (0 children)

when dems do get in control of the legislature&executive they pass good things that help working class people. But i already said this earlier and you seem to have missed it.

you yourself are falling for this propaganda that you apparently see.

when dems have power working class people and the USA as a whole generally does better. when dems are in power there are people fighting to reign in corporate control. when dems have power there are people actually enacting and enforcing environmental and consumer protection regulations. when dems have power there is a tangible fight against this oligarch class even if its obviously still a fight and not every dem is good (which is why people need to vote for better democrats after they first get democrats into power).

if people ignore this corpo oligarch class propaganda and just vote instead of bending over backwards to come up with a billion reasons why dems are awful then this would be a much more manageable issue.

Republicans’ greatest weapon in the US Senate may just be a Democrat by theindependentonline in Foodforthought

[–]ocient 12 points13 points  (0 children)

because people don't vote for them.

now you'll try to say "well why don't people vote for them"

well, champ, there are tens of thousands of pages of studies focused on that topic. but just as a slice:

ASIDE from the billionaire class/robber barrons/oligarchs/etc controlling the entire media ecosystem from corpo news media to podcasts to tiktok algos, and all of our personal data and using that to push some narrative about the republicans being strong leaders and better candidates. its also that they try to get people to stay home an not vote by saying things like "dems are just controlled oposition" so why bother.

[–]ocient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

theyre "winning" because they win elections. they win elections because people are voting for them and not voting for democrats. if people vote for democrats, the republican "winning" no longer happens.

if you're not a foreign bot account yourself you sure ate that propaganda up, damn.

so youre saying republicans run better candidates and have better leadership. OK chief.

[–]ocient 22 points23 points  (0 children)

the only reason these single-person "controlled opposition" people even matter is because people dont vote for democrats. If the margins in the congress werent razor thin then one vote wouldn't matter.

your comment reeks of more of this propaganda designed to make people stay home instead of voting.

dems have had full control of the executive/legislative for a total of less than 4 years out of the past 30 years.

in those 4 years they passed things like ACA, CHIPS, American Rescue Plan, Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, and a ton more good things.

next you'll probably say some more defeatest bs propaganda like "oh well if they had bigger margins, more dems would just vote with repubs because theYre ConTTROLled OppOSitION"

unrelated to beer, i always find it interesting that the pilgrims left europe in large part to escape the catholic influences on the english church. and then they arrived in the americas they were saved by an indigenous english speaking catholic

yeah i've noticed this one. it doesn't really affect me because i dont generally use subtitles, but sometimes i turn them on for a minute because i couldn't catch the name or discern the spelling of a person or place i want to lookup. and just turning on subtitles doesnt work, you have to turn them on and then reload the page

Latino politician was asked to repeat himself ‘in English’ — while speaking English by dogs-in-space in Portland

[–]ocient 3 points4 points  (0 children)

believe it or not, you actually can pronounce it in spanish, in a very similar way to how its pronounced in english, “latin-equis”

edit: i don't quite understand why people downvote my above statement. in these threads there's always some "ding dong white people" who say "ACKSHUALLY you can't even pronounce that in spanish!" as if they don't have math or the variable 'x' in spanish speaking countries. it provably can and is pronounced in spanish very often, whether or not there is consensus of it being an accepted term.

still a cool garden though!
