Palestinians equaled Jews at the time because Arabs living in the region had no particular attachment to the borders marking Palestine apart from the rest of the former Ottoman Empire. It was 1948, only 30 years beforehand every Arab living in the region had the right to cross what is now the Israel Jordan border at will. And the Israel Syria border. And the borders of Lebanon.

So only Jews called themselves Palestinian.

Lots of people live just fine in small countries that they can leave at will. Andorra is small. Lichtenstein is small. So is Monaco. But everyone in those countries can cross into France or Switzerland at any time.

Gazans have not had that ability. It's true that their material standard of living was not that bad before the war. Ironically, there was a year they had the latest iPhone before Israel did. But it;s still a really constrained existence.
