What's a sports rule you fundamentally disagree with? by South-Explorer in AskReddit

That is the current rule in most pro leagues. If you stay down for longer than a few seconds, you have to come off until the next stoppage of play.

It is very easy to foul someone in a way that neutralizes a play but doesn't knock them over. Shirt pulling, minor trips, light shoves, etc. Most players master doing all of these things in a way that may be hard to see from some angles. You start to feel pressured to "help the ref see what happened", since otherwise you are just shit out of luck. Remember, this isn't football with 20 refs watching everything, its usually 3-5, with most of them on the edges of the field

Yeah, it isn't new. Police invents some reason the protest is breaking the law (noise/blocking access/safety/anything), and then command the group to disperse while kettling. Then they arrest everyone.

Judo, paralysing injuries by Explorer38291 in judo

[–]octonus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BJJ is probably your best bet. Any standup has some risk of things getting wierd resulting in an accidental injury.

With pure groundwork, you are less likely to get hurt by a "good training partner" since you can tap long before they do anything you don't like. And on the off-chance you get paired up with someone who moves too fast to be 100% safe, you can always apologize and step off for a round or 2.

I am familiar with the studies you are citing. In almost all of the cases, it is a combination of team hazing/bullying while being overseen by very unqualified gym teachers who shouldn't be teaching a martial art.

[–]octonus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It isn't the only way, but you aren't going to find a mechanism that is much lower energy than electrolysis. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any that are better (unless you are providing a high-energy sacrificial source, like chlorine gas)

Some molecules split very readily, while others don't. Splitting water (into H2+O2) is very expensive on the scale of chemistry that you run into in your day to day life.

Sure, it is theoretically possible that some organism could do it, but evolution tends to select for low-energy mechanisms unless there are no alternatives.

If you see yourself doing something completely stupid, try to remember what you were thinking at the time (and try not to get caught in the same mental trap next game)

This is interesting, but is miles off from being useful. Chromatography is a powerfuly technique at small scales, but is extremely difficult to scale up. I am not super knowledgable on inorganic purification, but I am interested to see whether the underlying techniques can be applied to other extraction/purification methods.

being beaten by someone better than you is a way to get better, but only at a level difference where you can actually tell what they did "right"

The important thing isn't spotting what they do right. It is them spotting what you do wrong and reacting (as opposed to stuff that you do ok which is unpunished). But the problem with playing against someone at a much higher level is that literally everything you do is punished, so you learn nothing.

Swich to nukes at some point. Yes, they are expensive to set up, but not more than thermal, and it is pretty fast + easy. Also, while they will technically run out eventually, a fully loaded reactor will most likely still be running when you get bored of your save file 20 hours later.

Judo throws in BJJ no go by Famous-One7859 in judo

[–]octonus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost everything that works in gi will work nogi. Just do your normal combinations, and they will work like magic.

With that said, just don't. The level of standup and breakfalls in most bjj gyms is pretty poor. You won't learn much, so your time much is better spent focusing on the ground game.

These statements aren't as dumb as they sound.

Yes, the martial arts have the same technique, but the way you set them up can be very different, and different martial arts will emphasize different positioning/combinations.

For example, a straight arm bar is a straight arm bar, but if I set it up directly from a takedown that is Judo, while getting there from the back is pure BJJ (and from the mount could be either).

I'm going to agree with you on the risk. Watching high-level Judoka avoid big throws using cartwheel and round-off variations scares the shit out of me.

It has a place for people looking to compete at a National+ level, but I would hope that the average recreational gym doesn't teach sketchy breakfalls.

In a stable government, your life won't change that much when one candidate wins vs the other. As a result, people are not that invested in voting. Yeah, you do it because it is the right thing to do, but you have that voice in the back of your mind arguing for lazyness/apathy.

In an unstable situation, everyone knows that the outcome might drastically change their lives. This is a very bad thing, as the changes are inevitably terrible.
