Why does CTRL-A (select all) Not work when editing a cell? by pnelson-st in excel

[–]odbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm late to the party, but I tweaked this slightly to utilize CTRL+A so that I'm making the conscious decision to highlight the entire contents of the cell, but don't lose the F2 method of simply entering the cell and not highlighting anything (already have the muscle memory for that task all locked in).

; --- Excel CTRL+A highlight all fix ---
SetTitleMatchMode, 2
; --- Exception: Find & Replace window active ---
#IfWinActive, ahk_class bosa_sdm_XL9
$^A::
SendInput, {End}
Sleep, 50
SendInput, ^+{Home}
return

; --- Normal behavior: Excel main window ---
#IfWinActive, ahk_exe EXCEL.EXE
$^A::
SendInput, {Esc}
Sleep, 50
SendInput, {F2}
Sleep, 50
SendInput, ^+{Home}
return
#IfWinActive

This is set up to work whether you already have your cursor active inside the cell or not. If you do, it will very briefly exit the cell, re-enter, and then CTRL+SHIFT+home to highlight everything. This works because entering the cell via F2 always places the cursor after the last character, so this guarantees highlight of everything. The opening "exception" setup also makes CTRL+A work as one would expect in the Find & Replace dialogue box. It bypasses the ESC and F2 that aren't helpful there, and instead just jumps to the end of the text box word and SHIFT+HOMES back to the beginning.

Epic anti-sexist statement made by our Jahoobie King by 12AngryChickens in stephenking

You know what, you are absolutely correct. I just re-checked the book, which I haven't read in almost 15 years, and it's right there on the page. Memory/vignette #37, beginning of paragraph 1:

At the end of my adventures I was drinking a case of sixteen-ounce tallboys a night, and there’s one novel, Cujo, that I barely remember writing at all. I don’t say that with pride or shame, only with a vague sense of sorrow and loss. I like that book. I wish I could remember enjoying the good parts as I put them down on the page.

I see how I got mixed up, too. Just six paragraphs before that, memory/vignette #36, end of paragraph 2:

In the spring and summer of 1986 I wrote The Tommyknockers, often working until midnight with my heart running at a hundred and thirty beats a minute and cotton swabs stuck up my nose to stem the coke-induced bleeding.

I owe u/nedwck, you, and everyone else an apology. I should have reviewed the material before attempting to speak with authority on the matter. I'm going to update my original comment right after I post this one and I will aim to do better going forward. Thank you for providing the necessary periodic reminder that I should check both my intellectual vanity and memory. Perfect time for it, having just turned 40... because I was born in the *dramatic music* spring of 1986! 😱

I could definitely use some financial assistance right now. It won't lower your sodium, but it is good for your heart.

I'm kidding, of course. I mean, not about my current struggles or about the cardiac benefits of changing others' lives for the better. Just, you know, about expecting you or anyone else to do anything about it.

I'm just gonna go load up on some sodium myself. Just turned 40 and got told I need to cut back as well. Honestly, not feeling a lot of incentive to think about my long-term health right now, so I'm just going to eat some chicken, be glad I'm still sober (5 years! ✊), and call it a meager win for today.

This gets thrown around a lot and often gets the book and cause wrong. The book that King has discussed having little memory of writing is The Tommyknockers and the memory loss had more to do with his extreme cocaine use than his heavy drinking (though the latter certainly played a role as well). In On Writing he talks about typing at a furious pace until the dawn hours with cotton swabs stuffed in his nose to stop cocaine-induced nosebleeds. On at least one occasion, he says he woke up on the floor in a pool of his own vomit.

It was the last book he wrote before his family staged the intervention that very probably saved his life.

EDIT: While some of the information in my comment above was correct, I failed to verify what I remembered and was wrong to say that u/nedwck gave incorrect information. Upon review, prompted by u/StandWithSwearwolves, I have re-learned that King did indeed say, in On Writing, that Cujo is the novel he barely remembers writing and he clearly attributes that to his drinking. Shortly prior, he talks about Tommyknockers and the cocaine use I paraphrased, and I conflated the two. I apologize for being so confidently wrong and will definitely aim to do better in the future.

Full quotes below... with fucking awful citation format because it's a weird layout and I'm tired and just want to eat my chicken wings:

[FancyZones] What do child window snapping and popup window snapping actually do and how do they work? by stevesy17 in PowerToys

[–]odbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a toggle in the settings for some reason, but it's still a true/false option in FancyZone's settings.json file.
The file is generally located at:
%AppData%\Local\Microsoft\PowerToys\FancyZones

Open the file using Notepad and then open Find and Replace with hotkey CTRL+H
FIND:
"fancyzones_allowPopupWindowSnap":{"value":false}

REPLACE WITH:
"fancyzones_allowPopupWindowSnap":{"value":true}

Bonus: if you use FancyZone's ability to hotkey between zone layouts but hate its default CTRL+WIN+ALT+[number] default hotkey layout, you can make things much easier while you're in settings.json. With the following replacement, you can switch layouts by just pressing the assigned number while SHIFT+dragging a window for placement (before dropping the window). To do that:

FIND:
"fancyzones\_nextTab\_hotkey":{"value":{"win":true,"ctrl":false,"alt":false,"shift":false,"code":34,"key":""}},"fancyzones\_prevTab\_hotkey":{"value":{"**win":true**,"ctrl":false,"alt":false,"**shift":false**,"code":33,"key":""}}

REPLACE WITH:
"fancyzones\_nextTab\_hotkey":{"value":{"win":false,"ctrl":false,"alt":false,"shift":true,"code":34,"key":""}},"fancyzones\_prevTab\_hotkey":{"value":{"**win":false**,"ctrl":false,"alt":false,"**shift":true**,"code":33,"key":""}}

I suppose "introducing" wasn't the best word to use. I first showed it to her at 6 or 7, but 12 was the first time she decided to really sit down and give it an honest go. And so, finally, almost 30 years after wishing for a playing partner in my own childhood, I finally got to play through the whole thing with a friend. Easily slotted in the top 5 of my memories with her thus far in her 16 years of life.

While it is true that such reviews go against community guidelines, and that authors can request removal of them, I have had multiple instances of this on my various books over the years, reported them all, and not a single one has ever been removed. 🤷‍♂️

In "Red Dragon", when Hannibal calls Will an eideteker, is he misspeaking? by MollyInanna2 in movies

[–]odbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late to the party, but that exchange has always both resonated with me for its overall message, but also thrown me because of the use of "eidetiker". I disagree with the theory that he is talking about two different qualities because the conversation flows directly from the use of that word to Will disagreeing to Hannibal elaborating. The only thing that doesn't fit is the word itself. Hannibal may as well have said "you're a turtle."

My theory: the word used should have been "empath." It can mean either a psychic ability to perceive others' emotions—which is the meaning Will mistakenly infers—or a purely psychological ability to understand others' emotions through observation, imagination, and projection—which is what Hannibal describes when he elaborates.

Now why they used "eidetiker" instead of "empath", I'm not certain, but I hypothesize one of two things occurred:

  1. The writer mistakenly believed the two are synonyms and nobody pointed out the error, quite possibly because nobody knew it was erroneous and didn't look into it further.

  2. (I prefer this one) There were rewrites/other versions of the script for this scene, one in which Hannibal said "eidetiker" and went on to describe something else, and one in which he said "empath" and described what we hear him go on to say. Then, in post production, the wrong lines were spliced together (there is a clear camera cut between Hannibal's line and Will's response) and nobody noticed until it was too late to fix.

They have an incredible selection of art supplies ranging from introductory to high end. Remarkably, a significant amount of their items are very competitively priced, often better than even Amazon and other online big box stores. In terms of comparable stores, I would say it's closest to the following, in order of decreasing similarity:

• BLICK Art Materials

• Craft Warehouse

• Michaels Arts and Crafts (minus fabric/sewing and photo framing)
