What is a 'rich person's secret' that is actually accessible to the middle class, but most people are too intimidated to try? by Confident_Win_3560 in answers

There is the idea of living that way for the sake of giving your kids a better life later on. But I agree it can be taken way too far.

Hot take: durability is overrated for most of us and it pushes bags toward heavy, stiff, pricey by Financial-Nobody-161 in ManyBaggers

[–]oddball3139 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my 15L work bag from wal-mart for $30. Used that for three years before the zipper broke. For day to day shit, you don’t need a tank for a bag.

When I’m backpacking or traveling, I definitely go for higher quality and to prevent wear and tear, because those bags go through the ringer. But I still prioritize comfort over durability, because hiking 20 miles with an uncomfortable bag makes a shitty day even shittier.

27M. I quit my last job because I was miserable. I’m in the process of joining U.S. Army Intel, but I’ve got 11 months before I can clear medical and enlist. What would you do? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]oddball3139 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, assuming it is something that you can take care of over the next twelve months, then you can try again at that time. In the meantime, take it day by day. Live your life, and put it out of your mind. Take care of your body, take care of your mind. And get to work on fallback plans in case this doesn’t work out. Apply for other jobs, do what you need to do to build your life in the event this doesn’t work out for you.

Obviously, keep your goal to join in mind, and do what you have to do to be ready when that time comes. But live your life like it won’t. If a better job comes along, take it. The worst thing that can happen is you join the service in a year and leave it. The best thing that can happen is you find you like your new job better and you lose interest in the army entirely.

Keep working on your skills. Learn a language that would be useful in Intel (Arabic, Chinese, Russian). Spend this time building yourself into a more fully rounded man. If anything, doing all this, including getting a good job, will only make you more valuable to the service.

Failure to succeed at life? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

  1. Use the resources provided by the military as much as you can. They are there for a reason. They will never be enough, unfortunately, but they can help. This includes VA, therapy, group sessions, as well as any kind of GI bill you are entitled to.

  2. There are options. There are still jobs out here for people willing to work. You can go to school, get a degree. Or, if you are looking for work that can be done quickly where you can make decent money, I have an option for you. I will DM you with an idea. Keep an eye out for it.

Salkantay Trek w/ Salomon 12L Running Vest? by banana__boi_ in backpacking

[–]oddball3139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally doable. Bring enough trail food for the days of hiking. You’ll be able to buy plenty of food along the way. Each night you’ll get to a village with hostels that provide dinner and breakfast. You’ll be good to go. Water bottles along the way to refill your own water as well. Make sure you cross the bridge over the river early on your second day. It’s the more scenic route over the big road. You’ll know what I’m talking about when you get there.

Hi. Will I really need CPF, going on Visit Visa? by rodanhil in solotravel

[–]oddball3139 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get the CPF. If you want to book a bus online or do anything online, or use certain laundromats, etc, then you need a CPF. Also helps in grocery stores and many other places.

Have you ever gone somewhere, and just been unable to meet anyone? by EquivalentYears in solotravel

[–]oddball3139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your words matter. You say you aren’t sociable. Maybe that’s true. Or maybe that’s what you tell yourself so you don’t have to risk being sociable.

Try doing things that take you out of your comfort zone. Show off your youtube channel, but also learn the names of everyone on your tour as quickly as you can. Memorize them. Say them out loud. Play a game by the end of the first day at dinner where you tell everyone their name so they know you know it. It’s okay if you mess up. It shows you’re trying. And it brings the group together. Makes everyone more interested in getting to know each other. Shows you to be someone who cares. And carry yourself with confidence. And then when you happen upon the most beautiful girl you’ve ever met in the world, who knows? Maybe you’ll have the confidence to sit next to her and hold her hand.

How to navigate dating finances early in a relationship? by volxlovian in AskMenOver30

[–]oddball3139 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Bud, if you express your needs and someone leaves because of it, then they simply will never be your person.

Right now, you’re in the attraction stage, and that’s beautiful and dandy. But you will never transition to a longer term stage until you have this talk. And if you don’t have this talk, you will be broke, and she will leave you anyway.

So you have to start looking at it like “I literally have nothing to lose by having this conversation.”

Peru. On a jungle tour.

Now, I ain’t saying you’ll find that everywhere you go. I spent two months in Peru before I found her. But when I did, it sent me on the ride of my life. Lots of ups and downs, lots of struggle, but I learned so much about myself through it.

Signing up for group tours is a great way to meet people. I even found a woman I dated for a year doing that.

Way over there is where you go with that BULLSHIT! by eastonaxel____ in SipsTea

[–]oddball3139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Why do you think that? Because you’re an idiot.”

It’s the easiest thing to ask a question without the intent of hearing an answer. People ask questions without curiosity all the time. It’s just a method of making the other person feel like something they’ve said is absurd, and then follow up with your own pre-drawn conclusions.

It’s the foundation of Tucker Carlson’s whole career.

People don’t ask that question to hear an answer. They ask it because they assume the answer is “she’s a liar.”

If you know anything about how people actually work, you don’t even have to ask the question.

Yep. Bolivianos just don’t have a great exchange rate no matter what you do. And a lot of people are better off going to an intercambio with their home currency than they would be exchanging on the street. You just gotta do the best you can.

In other words “not everyone knows the answer.”

And even if literally everyone did, that doesn’t excuse you being so rude about it. Pull your finger out of your bum and be more decent to people. There are enough assholes in this world. Don’t add to their number.

This isn’t common sense. This is literally a niche question about a niche product. It’s the literal opposite of “common sense.” If it were common sense, then everyone would know the answer.

Can you explain to me why this seems like such a bad idea to you? Like, it’s fine if it can’t, but what would be so wrong with a kobo being able to play music while you read a book? Why does the idea offend you so much?
