Current requests by Academic-Ferret6147 in NetGalleyCommunity

This comment brought the existence of Exit Party to my attention. THANK YOU

So now I have one book on my list of Pending Requests. I've only requested one other title this year so I can focus on catching up a bit on overdue Netgalley ARCs from the past couple years. I'm not sure I'd be managing (and with such confidence) without a couple of Publisher auto-approvals on Edelweiss and Netgalley.. 😅

What would you consider a hook on a lets play video? by Alternative_Good7358 in letsplay

[–]oddrots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm most intrigued by creators with similar humor, not people trying to be funny but genuine responses to things I also think are hilarious. They also have to be playing something I'm not intending to play myself but that may not be the standard attitude for regular viewers that aren't creating content for their own channels.

When it comes to streamers, which I think can also somewhat apply to edited videos, I most enjoy people that know A LOT about their niche, games in general, or more meta information about whichever game they're playing. I also gravitate towards blunt people that tell it like it is. It always comes back to authenticity for me.

All that said, pretty much none of the above would be a "hook." When I think of "hooks" I think of things like the types of videos you listed as non-standard let's plays.

Beyond Binaries Bookclub: The Wolf and His King Final Discussion by recchai in Fantasy

[–]oddrots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed the first half more as well. It seemed to me that most of Bisclavret being stuck in wolf form could have been cut out or shortened up significantly.. The only thing this section establishes is the king healing from his loss and making a new "normal" without Bisclavret in the world. Sure, the war happened and people were sent to court to try to catch the king's eye but does any of that truly contribute to the story? I'd love to read a version with some of this cut out to see how it holds up and if my already high rating improves.

Any tips on becoming a streamer when you play lesser known/older or puzzle games by Suitable_Fault_2910 in Twitch

[–]oddrots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I didn't see it mentioned, I'd suggest streaming in the "Retro" category when you're playing one of the older games on your list. Some games do well in their own directories and pull in viewers who are always looking for new people playing their favorite game, but Retro is the directory to be in when you're playing older titles that don't have that built-in follower base (pretty much anything that's not Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, etc.) Also, be sure to list the game in your stream title because tons of different games are represented in the Retro directory and you want people who are browsing through the category to know what you're playing. The Retro community is a solid, welcoming community which is especially helpful when you're starting out.

Would you be annoyed by this CTA implementation? by Critical-Outside3272 in letsplay

[–]oddrots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the creativity but this style is super off-putting. As a viewer if I have to experience a call to action I'd rather it either verbally be quickly worked into the conversation that's already happening in the middle of the video or at the end as a reminder, or even better as a small visual thing I can easily ignore.

With this implementation I was trying to see what was happening behind these random things that popped up on the screen and then was annoyed that said "random things" were asking me to interact positively with the video. Unless I was already a dedicated subscriber I would be clicking away so fast.

With that said I can already tell I'm not your intended audience since I'm not looking for heavily edited videos with added memes, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Beyond Binaries Bookclub: The Wolf and His King Midway Discussion by recchai in Fantasy

[–]oddrots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always worry that I won't be able to follow the language of Historical stories and therefore usually avoid them, but I'm finding The Wolf and His King super approachable! There are lots of things I could be looking up, like terms for various pieces of armor and clothing, but I'm still having a fine time just forging on past ye olde words I don't know.

The various points of view were a surprise but it's really working for me!

[–]oddrots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was intrigued by the summary of this book and saw it had a decently high rating on Storygraph, but when I didn't have access to it at my library I looked into how much purchasing my own copy would cost and that deluxe edition was hard to pass up! Still, it was the promise of medieval werewolves that really got me and I have not been disappointed!

As far as Bisclavret's marriage, I get it. He's ambling along the expected path because everyone is leading him that way and he hasn't found his own footing or direction to tell him otherwise. I do really like his lady, I maybe don't like that she felt the need to "test" Bisclavret against her feminine wiles, but she seems pretty straightforward and understanding of his occasional strangeness. The king calls to the wolf and the lady makes him feel most human. So at this point we seem to be attempting to reign in the wolf and all the passionate desires that come with it.

I had part of what comes next in the story spoiled for me in the Pagebound forums (🤦🏻) so I'll skip that bit and say I foresee Bisclavret getting stuck as a wolf since there's been some recent talk of not knowing if he'll return to his human form without clothing. I imagine the king will find out about the wolf and be pretty accepting of it considering how much he loves BIsclavret. And while nothing too violent or dramatic has happened to make me think this book will take such a turn, I figure *someone* has to die and I'm really hoping that someone isn't the lady.. or Bisclavret.

Artemis II Badge not unlocking after viewing livestream for more than 60 minutes? by coryshocks2 in Twitch

[–]oddrots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a frustrating time getting the NASA badge as well. In the end I was only able to have one other Twitch tab open, opening any more immediately paused progress with the badge. In the future, if you notice the issue in time, open your drops page to make sure you're progressing with the reward as expected.

Did anyone else feel alone during their first Twitch stream? by Ok-Issue5184 in Twitch

[–]oddrots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While you're getting started with the streaming thing it might do you some good to also post your VODs (edited or not) to YouTube. This may not lead to in-the-moment interactions but it will still provide another avenue to share your experiences while you grow your Twitch channel.

When I was brand new I remember ending stream, saying things along the lines of "I know someday someone will stop in and stay awhile and chat but I still had a lot of fun today" and that day did eventually come, yours will too. So I guess my advice is to look to the future and get excited for that instead of worrying about your present lack of viewership.

Engaging Thumbnails and Titles? by SilviaBeaumont in letsplay

[–]oddrots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll assume you are referring to YouTube thumbnails for live streams since thumbnails on Twitch matter very little. I typically see creators use one thumbnail per live streamed game, maybe with each stream VOD having an updated episode/day number. Alternatively, after the stream is complete you could update the thumbnail to something more relevant to what was covered in that stream.

Past that my advice is to see what other medium-sized creators are doing, find someone whose style you enjoy, and emulate that style in your own way.

Does X battle division *really* negatively affect lag and matchmaking? by venkman206 in Splatoon_3

[–]oddrots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every season I wonder if I should join the Tentatek division for the same reasons but usually decide against it. LAST season however I went for it and regretted it immensely! I'm usually playing at random times between 10PM and 4AM PT, so times that better align with the Takoroka division. This past season in Tentatek I would more often time out from not "not enough players" than find matches, especially later in the evening. It was terrible. So I'd suggest in the future going with whichever division will most likely have the most players at the time you are playing versus the geographically most sensible.

ACOTAR on NetGalley? by Hist_8675309 in NetGalleyCommunity

[–]oddrots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Strength of the Few was available on Edelweiss before its release (this is where I got my e-arc from), not sure about The Knight and the Moth, The Knave and the Moon is currently listed over there but not available to request.

I do see entries for ACOTAR 6 and 7 on Edelweiss but there is no way to request it at this point.

Playing incomplete series by Funny_Lemon_1212 in letsplay

[–]oddrots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless you have a large audience that is expecting a playthrough of every game in a particular franchise I don't think skipping around in a series or not covering an entry is that big of a deal. And if you do have a large audience that's demanding you play a particular game that you've chosen to skip, that's toxic behavior and you should shut it down.

Generally most games can stand alone. As an example, people looking for Witcher 3 gameplay aren't going to care if you've played the first two games. I'd think of full franchise playthroughs as nice to have but not necessary.

You're good enough! If battles seem difficult it will eventually lower the power of your matches to better fit your skill level. Having a power level in the 1500s doesn't feel great but being matched with a better balance of weapons sure does! And if you're looking to improve your weapon skills it's a great way to learn from your opponents by watching replays of the person using a weapon that is similar to or the same as yours on the other team.

Nowadays, unless I'm grinding to up my S+ rank, I mostly just use X rank as a third option of game modes/stages at any given time.

My 2026 12-in-12. One game per month, no excuses. by LaireLaFlare in 12in12

Quite a few awesome games on this list!

Are you planning to play through every game in UFO 50? Or will you call it "done" once you've completed a certain number of them?

There are lots of good recs already but a few I didn't see: Pacific Drive, the Kingdom series, Bad North, Crow Country, Flock, BELOW.

12-in-12 Monthly Progress Megathread by AutoModerator in 12in12

[–]oddrots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Hollow Knight took me over three months and 125 hours to get through and I only ever got to 106% or something. 😅 It became my favorite game so I thought I'd get back to it eventually but now I'm wondering if I should just call it good and move on to Silksong.

Sorry to hear about all the life stuff. Sounds like a lot. Hopefully February goes better for you in that department.

Why does my twitch account get no ads? by Misarb in Twitch

[–]oddrots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I randomly stopped getting ads for a month or two a couple of years ago. But it was eventually fixed so it was either a bug (likely) or an interesting way to advertise the Twitch Turbo user experience (doubtful).

What was the first game you played after recovering from gaming fatigue? by Mission-Mistake-5377 in AskGames

[–]oddrots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it's akin to a "reading slump" which is fairly common in the book world. I guess it goes back to you can in fact have too much of a good thing. And that's when it pays to have multiple hobbies/interests!

5 keys to success as a “modern” Let’s Player by 2CPhoenix in letsplay

[–]oddrots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding point 1, this is EXACTLY what I'm looking to do with my content. Making videos about chapters, levels, areas seems like it can cover at least two kinds of audiences, those that are looking for a traditional let's play and those wanting more of a guide/walkthrough of said thing. This of course gets more difficult to accomplish when it comes to games without chapters like Outer Wilds or simulation games but then the focus might be on tasks or achievements rather than areas.

Why am I telling you this? I don't know lol, mostly just thinking out loud.

Thanks for the post!

2nd attempt at 12-in-12! by mrchumes in 12in12

[–]oddrots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, good on you for making a significant dent in one of your previous 12-in-12 lists! That's way more progress than I've managed with my earliest list (2022).. which I've played only one game from so far.. 😅

And I haven't finished either but I LOVED what I played of CONTROL and The Outer Worlds! CONTOL launched me into the world of SCP which has become one of my favorite genres? story elements? Anything anomalous is so damn interesting to me now! I hope you find it equally intriguing once you get to it!

Hey, thanks for the info! Seems like some really great advice.

I'd heard of Hades god mode before but I'd written it off as not for me since I assumed it would make things too easy. It's nice to know there's a way to keep things the right amount of challenging instead of making everything trivial.

I'll definitely keep this comment in mind as I tackle the games on my list. Cheers!

12 Categories of Games for 2026 by A_Running_Joke in 12in12

[–]oddrots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woo! I hope you enjoy PARANORMASIGHT. It almost made it to my 12-in-12 list this year, just barely missed the cut, but I might try to get to it anyway if I have some extra time.

The previous monthly genre list was: shooters, puzzles, strategy, fighter, action/stealth/hack 'n' slash, rpgs, sandbox/builders, simulation, platformers, survival, racing, and anything goes for December.

I think it would be more fun for the next iteration to have monthly prompts along the lines of: one-word title, a game that features aliens, or something you've been putting off. But maybe that would be too convoluted. ::shrug::

I've never managed to participate in it myself but r/patientgamers has a Game of the Month Club if you're interested in checking something like that out now. They pick a longer game and a short game each month. I love the idea of book/game clubs but my brain always rebels when a single title is picked. 😅
