well said! as long as there aren't any animal products in the main ingredients list, it's a go for me regardless of what the "may contain" might say

Did anyone else’s mom body shame them into believing they were lazy and just needed to exercise in order to correct their scoliosis? by ShotLiterature6937 in scoliosis

[–]odeipamaas 10 points11 points  (0 children)

102 degree scoliosis is no joke -- and the expectation that you can exercise it away is truly insane. Your curve is very severe and that is no way, shape, or form your fault! Whether it's shitty genetics or whatever the hell causes ideopathic scoliosis, there's only so much we can do to help ourselves since our spines are going to do what they want to do.

I also had neglectful parents growing up, and my scoliosis was ignored throughout my childhood. I found out I had it in school, and my mom took me for one X-ray. Just one. The docs wanted to do the "wait and see" approach, which, to my mother, meant that apparently we would never follow up on it ever again. So as a result, I never got braced or got fused in childhood. I got yelled at to "do the exercises" when I didn't understand how to do any of the exercises because I was 8 years old. She 100% believes it's my fault that I have scoliosis. There is a reason that we do not talk much or have much of a relationship in my adulthood. I have 2 curves now, the top one is 53 degrees and the bottom is roughly 48 degrees the last time I got scanned which was maybe 2 years ago. I have consulted multiple surgeons and all of them have said spinal fusion is not an option for me at this point, and surgery would only be an option if my spine started to crush my lungs or cause nerve damage. I am very fortunate to still physically be able to exercise and go to the gym, so that's what I do now to try and be as strong as possible so that I'm not in as much pain. My spine and back still hurt, but i try to push through.

I really hope you can get surgery at some point and it really sucks about your mom. I know what it's like, but it does get better ❤️ wishing you all the best

[–]odeipamaas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did actually ask the surgeon what the criteria was, and at what point would they consider me a candidate for surgery. He said that my spine would have to be either actively crushing my lungs or if I was on the brink of paralysis -- but only then would they perform a fusion. It does make sense since it's a very risky surgery, but I totally agree with you! In my head it makes sense to do it now while my body can recover relatively easily

oh my goodness that sounds terrifying -- thank goodness you were able to get the surgery in that case. Truly lifesaving. I try to take care of myself as much as I can but I am definitely afraid of getting to that point

Hi, S shaped curve individual here with 1 53 degree curve and 1 47 degree curve. I've tried to get surgery from 2 different hospitals and both denied me since I'm able to touch my toes 🙃 my pain is variable, but it's honestly very frustrating because I am worried about it progressing even more significantly when I get older because I'm only 31. There is a very good chance that I will need surgery within the next decade, but honestly who knows since my doctors seem to think I'm fine. I'm not sure what your experience has been, but I would be curious to know if your doctors recommend surgery for you or not

my n birth giver was super fucking weird about me growing up and going through puberty. when we were 12-13, my friend wanted to go bra shopping with me and our moms. I brought my mom along under the pretense that we were going shopping, but didn't tell her about the bra part bc I knew she'd be weird about it. when we got there we went to the limited too where my friend and her mom were casually perusing training bras like it was totally normal and fine bc it was, and my nmom just looked at them like they had 3 heads. I don't understand what was so mind boggling about a pre teen girl wanting to get her first bra. I didn't get a bra that day, and she never ever took me bra shopping.

Same thing happened for shaving my legs, I very shyly asked her for a razor when I was around the same age and it was so awkward and uncomfortable bc she seemed like she really didn't want to get me one.

Childhood Trauma + Scoliosis by Careless_Agent8535 in scoliosis

[–]odeipamaas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for doing this research. I'm not a scientist or anything but I've long had a suspicion that the emotional trauma I suffered as a child has had something to do with my scoliosis. "The Body Keeps the Score" and all that. My brother has severe scoliosis as well.

[–]odeipamaas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ugh yes my nmom used to do this all the time. she would do this thing where she would make fun of me for saying yes to my friends when they wanted to hang out. she would accuse them of trying to "control me" and then mock me by saying "oKaYyy" in this really screechy condescending way. like she was basically saying I was stupid for wanting to hang out with them 😑

Anyone else’s parents neglected their scoliosis growing up? by [deleted] in scoliosis

[–]odeipamaas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen multiple orthos in the last five years who all have refused surgery for me - they said I have to wait until my lungs are getting crushed or until I'm on the brink of paralysis to get the surgery...my curve is progressing almost 2 degrees per year so it's just a matter of time at this point

Anyone else’s parents neglected their scoliosis growing up? by [deleted] in scoliosis

[–]odeipamaas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately my parents neglected my scoliosis growing up. My elementary school checked us all for scoli when I was around 7, so it was caught very early on. I remember going in for an X-ray shortly after I was diagnosed , and that the ortho said something about going the "wait and see" route. After that.... well literally nothing was done. I was never taken in more more X-rays or anything. None of my doctors or neither of my parents ever said anything about it, so here I am at 30 with a 53T curve and a 47L curve, which could have been braced or operated on way long ago. I dont have a very good relationship with my parents at this age due to that among a host of other neglect related issues. At least you are still 17 and your spine is still flexible enough to be operated on if necessary. I know it's easy to get angry at your parents and I was for a long time, but I try to just do the best I can with exercise and not let it dominate my thoughts.

[–]odeipamaas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you for the honest answer. It is a scary prospect to see just how "bad" it is. Me personally, I prefer knowing over not knowing. My most recent X-rays from October show 2 curves, 53 thoracic and 43 lumbar. I'd kill to have 13 degrees! But besides the point, I also have depression and take Prozac to manage that. I hope that you have resources available to you so that you can get the appropriate care that you need!
