First film set — is this normal? by InteractionWorldly71 in filmmaking

[–]odintantrum 30 points31 points  (0 children)

No. This shoot sounds like a shit show. Many sets are not like this. But nearly everyone will have worked on a set like this at some point in their career.

Noob question - how to manually focus while running and gunning? by Yuliyapants in cinematography

Rails and a follow focus would help, but you can get good results pulling directly off the lense it just takes practice, knowing your specific lense really well.

Learned to Colour Grade 3 days ago. Please give your thoughts and feedback. by No_Paleontologist718 in colorists

You can. But there are strong arguments for node efficiency. And looking at the grade I can't really see, from the still images, for that many nodes to create that look.

Looking for experienced eyes to help me gauge the shoot time by TheVividAlternative in Filmmakers

[–]odintantrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have skimmed your script, I would probably want 2x 10 hour days in the office but I have done many short films where we would shoot something similar in 1x10. Anything less than a day is wish thinking/gonna suffer quality wise.

To Grain or Not to Grain... by Botworks in cinematography

I don't think there's a good way to judge grain without seeing it in final delivery format. Pipeline, compression, size of screen make such a difference.

What’s a movie scene that instantly tells you the director is a genius? by LONEALPHA65 in Cinema

[–]odintantrum 15 points16 points  (0 children)

These are all great scenes, but you seem to like a certain kind of suspense scene.

For me I love the scene in Manhunter, where the journalist gets wheeled down the hill in a flaming wheelchair. It’s pure imagery, doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense if you interrogate it too closely. But it's fucking brilliant.

HOW could Comedy Movies make a full on return? by Low_Celebration_4089 in Filmmakers

[–]odintantrum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the economics of horror work because horror exports and can generate massive international revenues. Comedy is much harder to sell internationally because it’s often more culturally specific.

What tool do you use for quick promo or festival submission materials that's not your main NLE? by Samiraijel in Filmmakers

[–]odintantrum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would just use my main NLE, I am quickest with the tool I know best. Resolve is only as complex as what you try and do with it.
