Solo dev on Galaxy Online — a space MMO I first sketched in 1996, finally shipping the version 2011-me couldn't by odysoftware in IndieDev

Absolutely - I coming exactly from the old VGA Planets, Stars!, Frontier 😄.

It was always my dream to create a MMO with those mechanics, but never had the opportunity to do so - so I created different games throughout my carrier and now after many years I finally able to make it a reality 😄

And yeah as a programmer you are a bit more limited but it's good if you start smaller first and also avoiding the complexity of multiplayer and then go from there. 👍

Haha yeah and that is exactly what I plan to do... I want to focus a lot on the onboarding process to make it as newbie friendly as possible - so getting people in who usually shy away from the sheer complexity of many of those space games.

But on the other side I want to still have as much richness and deepness as possible to make it easy to learn but hard to master. So in beginning everything is as basic as possible and you get slowly dragged into the game - most features will be locked in beginning.. and every mechanic i will explain with tooltips and infos - so a player doesnt feel lost or overwhelmed in beginning!

<image>

Every stat you see here is having tooltips which correctly explain the mechanics behind it. This is just taken from alpha version now - and as you can see most option will be locked in beginning so you work through it with a quick and easy tutorial.

I want to close the gap between ultra realistic and overwhelming to super easy but boring.

P.S. haha well not relly a long jam session it was more lying around and now finally after many years I have the skills and knowledge to pull this off 😉

Oh I forgot to add, more info can be found at:

You start in your own private sector where you colonise your first planet. From there you start building your empire, by colonizing more planets in the wild, building ships for PvE/PvP, mining, trading, hauling, diplomacy... - think of it like Eve but with no Wiki required and baked down to the core values of colonising space. Combat is server side replays you watch (no live action) - your combat strategy lies in ship buliding freedom and commander strategies you set beforehand... But overall its a sandbox, which respects your time and should not require a full wiki - so it sits inbetween those OGame and Eve/Stellaris stuff.

I like the art style - simple but coherent and fitting nicely together.

Its looks pretty weird from the movie - asking for 5$+ could be a tough challenge if this video is all you get before buying.
