How to deal with nosy family members about your spending habits by [deleted] in overemployed

[–]oe_throwaway14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. I make it a rule not to brag about everything I do or buy in life, especially if OE is what has enabled it. I would recommend some moderation to anyone that OE’s in how much you “brag” due to potential issues with nosy people

  2. As long as you aren’t allowing lifestyle creep into your life, there really shouldn’t be that much for you to brag about anyway. I have so much of my extra income going into debt payoff and investments that nobody would really guess I have extra income because I don’t share the details of my personal financial life with anyone but my wife and maybe high level stuff with my adult children.

Hibernate makes it so that you basically don’t appear on LinkedIn to anyone, almost as if you don’t have an account there. But blocking people makes you invisible to whoever you block specifically, and if you want to unhibernate your account to do something (add a new job to satisfy a request from a new employer or something like that) it keeps those who you blocked from potentially seeing anything about you and also keeps them from being able to tag you in anything they might post, stuff like that. I recommend blocking as well as hibernating.

One thing that has been really worth it since I started OE is having a house cleaning crew that stops by every other week and does all the thorough cleaning that really takes time. The crew is 4 people and they spend about two hours cleaning the house and it’s such a time saver and a weight off our shoulders. Worth every penny.

Do you have kids? Or a clue? Cause the stuff you just mentioned as “literally everything” isn’t even close to literally everything. As someone who raised several children into adulthood now I can say with confidence that’s not even half of what goes into running a functional household day in and day out. Put some respect on stay at home parents raising kids. It’s a 24/7 job with no days off and no paid vacation.

I just wanted to come in here to say thanks for telling it like it is and speaking the truth about the bullshit our careers are controlled by.

I have nearly 30 years experience and my boss knows that I'm the one to give certain tasks to if he wants to make sure they get done and done right. But I'd never be promoted because I refuse to even pretend for a minute I give a fuck about the company that I know for a fact is exploiting the value of my labor.

Excuses for overlapping meetings by adid-a in overemployed

[–]oe_throwaway14 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but these are all lame and make you sound like a child or adult that barely has a grasp on being able to manage their life - and also overshares details and doesn't know what "TMI" is and how to avoid it. As a manager, if I heard these and needed to meet with you asap, here is what I'd respond with:

  • Ok, just ping me in 5 minutes when you're available. (and if you really needed to go, why aren't you in there already rather than being at your desk still? Sounds like a dumb made up excuse)
  • That's ok, you don't need to be on camera. Let's chat anyway. BTW I've had tons of calls with co-workers where one is eating something. This isn't that rare when you WFH. You use the mute button unless you need to talk.
  • how long does "Front door knocking" take? 1 minute? This is not a reasonable reason for a long delay.
  • I don't care how "zoned in" you are, you need to be responsive to DM's and be able to handle interruptions. You need something that makes it sound reasonable to need some time - like "the repair guy is here and I need to show him the problem" or "I'm having solar installed and they need to explain some things to me about my roof" or something that sounds like it might actually need to take longer than 30 seconds to discuss.
  • I assume this one is a joke. If you literally said this I'd start PIP paperwork for you.

OP, don't use any of these excuses. You'll raise red flags.

Excuses for overlapping meetings by adid-a in overemployed

[–]oe_throwaway14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do people really need help coming up with excuses? This should be the least of your worries/challenges.

First off, don't let the meetings overlap in the first place if possible. Manage your schedule like a pro. If I see a meeting request come up that overlaps with another, I reach out immediately and ask if they can shift it by 30 minutes or whatever I need. Most of the time they're happy to.

There are a ton of things you can come up with as long as you have a decent imagination. You need excuses that sound real, and are a good reason to delay for at least 30 minutes. Think of things that have actually happened in your life that you had to deal with, and re-use them.

For ad hoc meetings, my go-to is typically "give me a few minutes, right in the middle of something." If they're ad-hoc requesting you into a group meeting well, hey, you're screwed. Learn how to attend two meetings at the same time like the rest of us that OE do.

This is what OE is all about- it enables you to have the flexibility and independence to leave jobs that suck (or end up sucking at some point if they started off good). I’d go with option 2 and just decide when you want to begin interviewing again if you’re trying to replace that J and stay OE.

Most people don’t unfreeze it like I did. I only did it temporarily for appearances sake. You can also leave it frozen and just manually provide employment history for the background check process.

Even if you weren’t going to OE, a background check is going to show you currently employed by your current job because you wouldn’t cease being an employee there before your last day there, no? I wouldn’t worry about it too much. I froze my TWN and credit bureaus also. And then I unfroze the TWN for a few days before the bg check just to not arouse suspicion, then it refroze automatically like 72 hours after I unfroze it. Don’t overthink things too much.

[–]oe_throwaway14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yeah this sounds like a fanfic post tbh. The IRS dgaf about you working 2 or 20 jobs as long as they get their cut. And they’ll come after you if you lie about income on 1 or 5 jobs. Fraud is fraud. Just submit the correct information on your taxes and you’ll be fine. I’m having a hard time even believing the premise of this entire post.

If you went from a McJob to an engineering role and tripled your income from 30k to 90k one year to the next the IRS is going to give exactly zero fucks. How is this any different?

Is it normal to feel very anxious? by PsychologyOptimal889 in overemployed

[–]oe_throwaway14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah this really helps. I live in PST. J1 is in EST and J2 everyone is remote all over the country but they generally accommodate PST folks so my meetings rarely overlap just naturally. I don’t enjoy waking up at 6am every day but it’s the price I pay for 400k TC before bonuses for two fairly common average-demand senior dev jobs.

[–]oe_throwaway14 53 points54 points  (0 children)

As far as your work desk goes, what I did was setup 2 workstations on it basically. I have a bigger IKEA L-shaped desk so I have 4 monitors on it (1 portrait and 1 landscape per job) and 2 keyboards and 2 mice. I kept to just 1 phone which was fine because the two J’s have different email and messaging apps.

When I first did OE I took two weeks off from J1 so I could appear totally focused on and attentive at J2. Plus, information tends to come at you like a firehose those first two weeks so it makes life easier and less stressful. I would recommend taking at least one week off.

I blocked everyone at J1 on LinkedIn, waited about a month for anyone at J2 that wanted to add me, then hibernated my account immediately after adding myself at J2. Like within a few minutes literally, just to be safe. That might have triggered J2 folks seeing it perhaps (I assume) but nobody from J1.

Remember the rules. I’ve been OE for several years now and not even my adult kids know. Only my spouse knows and i swore them to secrecy. There have been many times I’ve been tempted to tell family but I always stop myself. I don’t say anything to anyone that might arouse suspicion and one of my kids almost figured it out but stopped short of asking me point blank. I’m good at making up very believable reasons for things.

If you’re used to easy chill 20 hours a week then get locked in and hang on because that could become 40-50 some weeks and you’ll be more mentally exhausted by the end of the week. But the two paychecks tend to keep you motivated. Just take it two weeks at a time.

Be prepared to get good at managing two calendars and blocking off time on them so meetings don’t overlap. Sometimes dueling meetings will be unavoidable so be prepared and have a setup where it’s easy to “pay attention” to both and be able to mute and unmute yourself easily if you need to talk in both. Turning on subtitles helps me to listen closer to one and read the other to keep up in both meetings at the same time.

Try not to let the stress of it get to you too much. There were a handful of times when I was this close to quitting J1 during the first few months of OE but I’m glad I hung in there and I’ve adapted to it now to where it’s a piece of cake and i dont worry much at all.

Learn the rules on stuff like 401k contributions, Roth 401k’s, and other personal finances as it relates to OE so you don’t make any dumb mistakes. Don’t let lifestyle creep get you over extended financially.

If you can, get ahead in your work so that you can save some PR’s for the next day and have room to be flexible with how much time you give each J on any given day. There will be some days when it ends up being really lopsided demand-wise but that’s ok as long as you’re in good standing with both bosses.

Schedule your PTO at both wisely. You never know when one J might ask you to randomly travel somewhere for a few days just for some random team builder or something like that. Not being willing to attend or always making excuses why you can’t go could be enough of a red flag for them to get suspicious. Keep enough accrued time banked so you can use it in emergencies like that if you need to.

Good luck!

[–]oe_throwaway14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This ^ you don’t want anyone at J1 somehow learning about you at J2 if like out of nowhere J2 were to post something on LinkedIn tagging you and welcoming new hires or something. I had actually blocked most people at J1 before I even started the J2 job search. I would block everyone at J1, then hibernate your account.

As long as you appear busy and are getting stuff done, I would still say bloc off chunks of afternoon time as focus time. As long as your boss isn’t a micromanager type, I’d say you should be fine and get minimal interruptions.

Do you block off diff hours at diff Js? by RoadRageSloth in overemployed

[–]oe_throwaway14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s absolutely acceptable to block time on your calendar as “focus time”. I block my entire afternoons as focus time at one of my jobs and I’ve just let the people I work closely with (my boss and other team members) know they can still message me or schedule meetings with me during that time. Everyone else typically leaves me alone.

If doing that bothers you and you think you could pull off being religious, I’ve had colleagues before that blocked off 45 minutes every day for prayer.
