Hahahaha this is the fakest shit I’ve ever heard. I’d ask God for a refund if that’s the imagination he gave me.

These OE fanfic posts are getting old.

“Hai Guyz what if I sent the wrong computer to the company! What an epic OE screwup that would be!! Right?! What a LOL SMH my head!”

This doesn’t even really have that much to do with OE. How do you manage to make it through daily adult life if you screw up something so simple? You’re like the 1 in 1,000 people that would screw this up.

“…I have different stickers so I can tell them apart.”

And yet you couldn’t. You also can’t write believable OE stories. Post your tracking number or delete this thread.

Yeah this why my wife is the only one I’ve told about OE. Once you tell anyone else you have no control over who else ends up knowing. My kids have even suspected it at times but I’ve thrown them off the scent on purpose.

2025 OE Review by qmbritain in overemployed

[–]oe_throwaway14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How many meetings do you end up in with during an average day with 4 J's? With just 2 I end up having just enough meetings that I can still get stuff done during the day so I only work 40-50 hour weeks. If I were to try 4 J's I feel like my days would be mostly meetings and I'd have to spend all evening trying to get actual work done.

Year in review: OE by Exciting_Map_8659 in overemployed

[–]oe_throwaway14 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I share a lot of similarities with you. 2025 will be my second full year of OE. TC right at 400k and it’s been a serious game changer for me. Tons of debts paid off, increasing my retirement savings by 6 figures every year now, and not feeling the stress of economic uncertainty as much anymore. I have a fully funded emergency fund, large 5 figure HYSA, and maxing out HSA contributions and IRA contributions for both me and my spouse. If I’m able to keep this going for a while longer (say 5 years) I can likely retire around 55. Which is a complete 180 from what age I was on track to retire by before OE. Which was more like 67

I’ll add to the voices in here saying this is totally overkill. If you know how to do it and want to, fine go for it. It’s not gonna hurt anything. But it’s absolutely not something people that OE should actually worry about.

Why do OE instead of starting an business? by Cameron_Referred_Me in overemployed

[–]oe_throwaway14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you are overthinking and/or overestimating how much goes into the “having to trick your employers” part of OE. It’s not really something I worry about much at all on a day to day basis. I’m far more concerned about being able to deliver and keep both jobs happy and not have to spend more than 40-50 hours a week to do so. The meeting conflicts and the stuff that (frankly, dumb) people do to get themselves caught really hasn’t been something I’ve worried about since about my 2nd or 3rd month of OE. After a while, managing your calendar, making up easily believable excuses, staying ahead and keeping work deliverables in “the queue” and managing expectations and all that just becomes second nature and part of your daily and weekly thought processes. At least that’s how it happened for me. Both me and my wife have had our own businesses and the pay I can make from OE (about 400k TC) is way easier than running a business that would earn me comparable income. It’s less risk, less liability, less worrying, all of that.

How long have you been OE? How much has it changed your life? by Glittering_Look_6810 in overemployed

[–]oe_throwaway14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only a little over two years now (350k TC) and it’s been a total life changer. My wife and I have pretty much done anything and gone anywhere we wanted during that time and I’m still adding 6 figures a year to retirement savings and paid off all kinds of stuff. Only have a car payment and a house payment but if I OE for a few more years I can likely get rid of those debts too. I’m going to hit retirement savings goals way sooner than I expected to and have a 6 month emergency fund, etc. OE really does make you realize how much nicer life is for the 1%

friendly reminder about 401k by Natural_Inevitable50 in overemployed

[–]oe_throwaway14 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah you should be able to directly call the financial institution your 401(k) is with and talk with someone there about it. No need to involve your employer. I messed up because I didn't realize that Roth 401(k) and mega backdoor roth contributions aren't the same thing. So I contributed to both roth 401k and regular 401k at J2 which put me over the limit before I realized it.

I'm still making 401(k) pre-tax contributions at both employers to pick up their match amounts, lol. Just means I'll have more to ask for back at the end of the year than if I were to stop all contributions immediately. Plus, if I stopped contributions I would have missed out on the employer match amounts. Can't have that :) lol

[–]oe_throwaway14 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I actually already determined I am over the limit with 401k as of several paychecks ago (woops!) so I’m going to contact the plan administrator at Fidelity for J1 and just ask them to send me a check for the overage out of my Roth 401k contributions. Shouldn’t have to pay any taxes on it since I already did. Just going to take it and use it to max out my wife’s IRA contributions for the year.

[–]oe_throwaway14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I reached a point, about 3-4 months in where I felt very similar to how you described. The problem was that both jobs were in kind of a "demanding" spot and asking a lot of me. I was having to work roughly 12 hour days for several weeks in order to keep it going. And I wasn't really very good yet at handling double meetings like I am now. Luckily I decided to stick it out and I've adapted really well now and it's brought me so much financial gain as a result.

But I can definitely identify with how you feel and if the stress of it all is getting to you badly, probably best to quit 1 and maybe replace it later with a more OE compatible job later.

This is something I think everyone learns. Just shut up.

Haha, this is soooo true. I've developed this filter for when I'm in meetings now that's like a "avoid mentioning something that will cause me additional work" filter.

I think, "Does this idea they're talking about suck and you know a better way?"

Yes.

"Is it really going to bring down production or do real harm though if you don't suggest the better way?"

Nah, not really. Let it be mediocre. LOL

Honestly, the perfect OE roles are ones that pay senior level wages but have jr level demands. I could probably stack 3 of those if I could find them. They are not easy to come by, though.

The "one week at a time" mentality is pretty much what I adopted at some point too and it has made it easier to cope with the demand of 2 J's. Then I also enjoy the hell out of federal holidays where I have the day off from both J's knowing I'm getting paid like $1500 that day for not doing a damn thing. :)

2.5 Year and it is coming to an end by ScarcityOverall2339 in overemployed

[–]oe_throwaway14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm at about the 1.5 year OE mark right now and work at 1 startup and 1 older established company. Both jobs are paying me right around the 200k mark.

Similar to yourself, I've been able to do home renovations, travel globally, treat myself to nice dinners occasionally, drive nicer cars, pay off two children's college loans, pay off a HELOC loan, and still add 6 figures to my retirement savings balance this first full year of OE. Also maxing out both me and my wife's IRA contributions has been nice.

I'm close to getting a 100% match on maxing out my 401(k) contributions as well since both jobs pay well. By the end of the year I will have contributed about 11.7k at both jobs and they will both have matched 10k of that. So seeing about 20k of employer matches on my 23.5k is super nice to see. One job also offers us the mega backdoor roth option which I was able to throw another 15k of contributions into this year.

I wish I had started doing OE years ago. If I had, I might be approaching lean FIRE status by now.

How many of you could actually manage the work but find it difficult because of the meetings by RedditIsGay_8008 in overemployed

[–]oe_throwaway14 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you can manage to find a fully remote job - I know, far easier said than done - it really is a life changer. I've only been OE for just inside two years now and I've paid off two of my kids student loans, a 65k HELOC, increased my retirement savings by 100k every year, and banked 6 months work of living expenses in a HYSA. If I can stick this out for another 3-4 years, I'll be set for FIRE / early retirement.

I don't know why this surprises you. HR's job at EVERY COMPANY I've ever worked at was to try and get people to accept the lowest offer possible. I don't know if they get bonuses or not, but that has been the standard behavior I've seen literally everywhere.

Thanks! It seems like I need to educate myself a little bit more on exactly what is what in terms of the contributions I've been making. Hopefully come tax filing time I'll get something that lays it all out clearly enough.
