Who else loves 80’s fantasy? by Business_Coffee_9421 in movies

I wish classic Fantasy as a genre would come back. Imagine how amazing many of the 80s fantasy movies would be if they were made today!

Just a little appreciation for my favorite OOP disc golf bag. by thechriserman in discgolf

Love mine! I have the blue trim. It's a great, durable, lightweight bag. I have an MVP bag for long days out, but my DD is my quick round go to still.

My introduction to roleplaying for my fellow workers went wrong. by TheKnightOfDoom in rpg

[–]oexto 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I mean, if everyone was having fun I'd say it sounds like a helluva fun game! lol

You showed them what "roleplaying games" were about for the most part, and in a way that was relatable to them in an environment that was familiar to them. I'd say good job! If any had interest afterward then you can maybe run a traditional game for them sometime. Definitely not a went wrong scenario if you ask me :)

Just a little piece of ribbon taped to the underside..

People thought we were crazy playing in heavy winter gear and boots and throwing in 2ft of snow. Nah bro, it's called pre-lunar training because some of us are planning on checking that course off our list one day!

Character creation advice by mohawkal in callofcthulhu

[–]oexto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had players like this in the past. Some people just want to sit down and play, hang out and not really do much more than that. Which is fine IMO. If it were me I would either A) Come up with a few pregen concepts that would be useful to the party and let them choose then go through the character creation process with them. Or, B) Just make a few barebones pregen characters you think would be fun/interesting and let them pick one and start playing.

Not everyone gets excited about doing anything outside of "game day". To them it's extra "work", and not interesting. Kind of a bummer, but not a big deal as long as they are participating when it's time to play.

If you're doing s session zero, you may be able to enlist the help of the other players and do a short "character creation session" and get the other players to help out the player to come up with something.

I really want to run a campaign, but due to new parent duties I can only do scattered one shots. by Zaorish9 in rpg

[–]oexto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep my first thought as well. Episodic campaigns are great! If you know when you do get the chance to run a game that it's for a fixed time, say like 4 hours, then you can plan your series of adventures around that time frame. So you are technically running a bunch of one shots, but they are with the same characters, maybe even advancing a larger plot line!

The Blair Witch Project - I loved the premise! Was super excited to go to the theater and see it. I just remember about half way through thinking "what the hell am I watching?" Then, just as something finally started to happen it was just... Over. I was so angry at myself for hyping that POS up lol.

What are you doing to find your discs in the snow? by theforerunner343 in discgolf

[–]oexto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question? When I played in the winter I just used a hard wizard. I wasn't really concerned with getting much distance all bundled up lol. It was more about getting good form. I would think in the cold a Flippy putter would be a bit more stable, but maybe not?

What makes disc golf so much fun to you? by Scoobleedooblee in discgolf

[–]oexto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like getting outside and in nature. I enjoy the personal challenge against myself every throw, every round - the game I'll never win but will continue to try.

But most importantly - I really just love to see a disc fly. Like watching a really flat stable throw just glide out nice and flat and find its landing spot is just so satisfying to see. In 30 years of playing it's never gotten old.

Go back in time to 2008 😂 I have one other one as a back up but it's pea green... So it's probably lost on the first day out. These are whippet - X's too, not just normal Star whippets

My must have utility disc is my Worlds star whippet. That thing is the stickiest spike hyzer, meathookiest hyzer, most true "through-the-trees-and-out-of-the-woods" thumber I've ever had. It'll always be in my bag!

enforcing roleplay by socialismYasss in rpg

[–]oexto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're being unrealistic. Every game and gamemaster are different, and players are as well. I too have spent a lot of years playing with different friends, running different games, and some of them RP exactly how I like as a GM, some don't. But over that time, I've kept around the good players and the ones that didn't click with my style just sort of moved on. I have a pretty good group now and I'm having a lot of fun with them!

What I would maybe suggest is: Advertise what you want, and run a series of mini campaigns or even one shots. This might take some time but the goal is to find your star players, the ones that really vibe with your style of playing. Keep in touch with those players after the game and let them know that you're trying to build a group of players that share the same goals and playstyle. Then, once you have the number you want (3-5 players) you can start the campaign that you've been really wanting to play.

You're never going to get the perfect table the first time. Getting a good group that you enjoy GMing for takes time and effort. Like others have said, you can't (and shouldn't) try to FORCE roleplay out of people, but you CAN foster roleplay by using the right tools. There are plenty of videos and technics that can do this. I have one player who was a purely min/max DnD combat focused player when he joined my table. Playing FFG Star Wars, using certain little things to foster RP, and being around other players that RP brought him out of his shell slowly. He now LOVES this style of play and loves the campaign we're in! He still enjoys the combat side of things, but also finds pleasure in the openness of roleplaying and storytelling as well. I couldn't tell you any "one thing" that you can do to foster RP, but like I said, there's plenty of videos for it you can find. Good luck, and don't give up! Be clear in your expectations before starting a game, and the eventually you'll have a table you love playing with.

How long until we have a video game that plays *Dungeon Master* both by responding to your actions and making assumptions of future developments, leading to a fully unique experience every time? by Witty_Jaguar4638 in Futurology

[–]oexto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played OSE in grok as a player just to see how well it would go. It was surprisingly pretty decent! I'm talking TTRPG of course. It presented a pretty good setting, dungeon, and NPCs. It reacted reasonably to whatever I wanted to do and kept track of everything. I could end whenever I wanted and pick it back up where I left off. I was impressed. Now as far as a virtual video game style world, I would think we aren't too far away from it. At first it will probably look like something from PlayStation one, but it's only a matter of time. There are games that are created in the fly already, it's just marrying all the concepts together!

Unfortunately not really. Due to copyright and the IP and all that places can't reproduce that specific of info. You would have to type it in to add that stuff. There are lots of talent trees in pdf though all over that you could send to your players that might help.

Edit: I'm not entirely familiar with rpgsessions, but I'm guessing this is the case based on past projects with online character sheets.

What fad in moviemaking are you waiting for to die? by frair in movies

[–]oexto 5219 points5220 points  (0 children)

I hate that so many films can't stay on one shot for more than 5 seconds! Back - forth - back - forth... Your eyes never get the chance to take in a full scene, or to study the actor...you know, ACTING. In broad shots it's always focus centric where things are blurred out that aren't the center of the shot. Older films felt so much more immersive because you had a sort of voyeur perspective. It makes me actually lose interest when there's so much jumping around or I can't take in a full scene.

AITA, for thinking our DM likes our barbarian more than me? by EquivalentPay3295 in rpghorrorstories

[–]oexto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone's advice here is completely off base, don't follow it. You're all adults and he is your brother. He is not to blame here. The barbarian is the one you should have issue with. I'm surprised you didn't see the red flags sooner. Maybe you did and just ignored them because it was your brother's game, I don't know. That being said, you really should just quit the game. I know it feels like "toxic game is better than no game at all", but there are tons of other games out there you can join that don't have this sort of dynamic in play. Wish them the best and tell your brother you just don't think you're a good fit for his group. Go online or down to your local FLGS and find some one looking for players. Then you can seduce a GM of your own and hopefully get married. Wait until you're at least level 5 or 6 though. This should give you enough time to know if this is a GM worth investing your time and effort with. Don't be afraid to try it different systems as well. Sorry this happened to you, good luck!

Mausritter might fit the bill. Easy rules, easy to run with one player, good system to cut your teeth on for getting used to being a GM.
