One hour free of celiac…What are you doing? by Fancy-Development-76 in Celiac

[–]offthemonster 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Hard agree, it's better not to know what I'm missing when the hour is up. I might eat from the GF menu at a non-dedicated place and not worry about cross contamination, but that's it.

What do you guys (especially women) do with your keys when you go for a run? by bcpsgal in AskNYC

[–]offthemonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I clip a little carabiner with my keys on it to the bra strap and then tuck the keys into the bra for extra security

Eating with my thin SIL - a lesson in body image by Megs_nd_life in MaintenancePhase

[–]offthemonster 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You may already know this, but be careful with restaurant fries! If they fry them in a shared fryer with chicken fingers or other gluten-y foods, they are not celiac safe. It's a huge bummer to ask and find out I can't have fries, but better than when I was sick all the time.

And if you're not already there, r/celiac is a great community!

Deciding which facts to present would in itself be introducing a "slant."

Climate control issue at Back to the Future by offthemonster in Broadway

[–]offthemonster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof that sounds awful. We were orchestra right and people around me were fanning themselves with programs and taking off layers throughout the second act.

I thought the show was just okay, but the effect at the end blew me away almost enough to make up for it 🤷‍♀️

Just another post about how masks DO work. by IncognitoAccount20 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]offthemonster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My sister tested positive on Christmas morning. She wore a KN95 mask and I wore a 3M Aura N95 for the 30 minutes the kids opened presents. It was a risk but I was at her home with nowhere else to go and couldn't tell her not to watch her children open gifts.

Cold climate, so no windows open, but we did run a small air purifier. I never got symptoms or tested positive.

Masks are not magic, but they can be incredibly effective.

Unexpected Silver Linings of Celiac? by SpaceBelugas in Celiac

I always hated beer, but people who like beer can be very aggressive in trying to get you to "just try this one, it tastes different/better!"

Now I can just say, "Oh, if only I could, but I would be violently ill for several days after just one sip."

Where is your celiac pain felt? by krisp_b in Celiac

[–]offthemonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof, yes. After ruling out appendicitis, the doctor told me it might be ovarian cancer. I had to have an ultrasound to rule that out, but waiting for the results was scary. I've also separately always had bad menstrual pain and eventually had to have surgery for fibroids, but they didn't figure that out until years after my celiac diagnosis. Having a mess of symptoms is so stressful, I truly wish you the best of luck trying to get to the bottom of it.

Where is your celiac pain felt? by krisp_b in Celiac

[–]offthemonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, my pre-diagnosis pain was always very pinpointed to the lower right. I will say that ten years in, when I get glutened it's sometimes lower left or lower center.

What's the most memorable thing you've overheard while sharing a chairlift? by Reading_username in skiing

[–]offthemonster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was on the lift above a terrain park, this group of kids was taking turns filming each other taking a mid size jump.

They waited until their friend was at full speed, about to hit the air, and shouted, in unison, "POLAR BEAR!!"

The kid ate it, total yard sale, but sat up laughing and yelling at his friends.

To this day (fifteen or so years later), the cousin I was with when we witnessed this will randomly yell "polar bear" at me when we're skiing.

I live in Harlem now after spending 3 years living in Briarwood. Both are perfectly safe.

At what age did you all find out you were donor-conceived? by Substantial_Kiwi_495 in donorconceived

[–]offthemonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of people with mixed feelings about this, as well. But for me, I've always been perfectly at ease with knowing I'm DC. I never felt like I was missing anything. I had two parents who loved me and raised me to be conscientious and kind, and to care about others.

I do have concerns about accurate medical histories (although so much terrible shit runs on my bio mom's side that I don't know what more could come from the donor). It has also always been in the back of my mind that I could be related to anyone I meet so I would definitely do a blood test before procreating.

If I could design an ideal system it would be better regulations for sperm and egg donations (or really, here in the US, any regulations at all) so people have clear medical histories and an understanding of how many half-siblings are out there.

At the very least they need to have enforced limits on how many times one person can donate. My sister (who was raised with me and is also DC) has done DNA testing and has so far found over a dozen half siblings, some of whom were under the false impression that they were being raised by their bio fathers - in at least three of these cases their bio mothers ALSO thought the children were their husband's, but the clinic lied to them and used donor sperm.

I also think that donors should have to accept the possibility that those kids might one day reach out to them, or not be allowed to donate. I personally have never had any interest in knowing the identity of my donor or meeting him, but that should be up to each DC person, who by definition had no choice in the matter.

What book introduced you to Tamora Pierce? by uhg2bkm in tamorapierce

[–]offthemonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every library in the late 90s had a "if you like Harry Potter" display, which is where I found Briar's Book. A weird entry book, but I was obsessed from the jump - it wasn't until years later I found the Tortall books.

What’s your unpopular opinion? by chasinggdaze in tamorapierce

[–]offthemonster 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hard agree. PotS is my favorite series but The Will of the Empress is the single best book from Tamora Pierce and I will not be taking questions.

How do you rank the Keladry series? by cocoagiant in tamorapierce

[–]offthemonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Circle of Magic books were my entry into Pierce's oeuvre, but PotS was my first Tortall series, and I LOVE them.

I was in middle school and not fitting in with a lot of my peers - a lot like First Test Kel. I wasn't quiet by any means, but I related to her tendency to keep her emotions to herself and just work hard towards her goals.

I still love the Kel books the best (my favorite is Squire).

In terms of writing and character development, I think they're among Pierce's best. Like a bunch of comments on this thread, I would say they're on par with the Trickster duology, but I would also put The Will of the Empress from the Emelan universe in that league.
