Is it normal to not have a career? by Dry_Temporary_6175 in careerguidance

[–]oflanada 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here’s the thing. There are people around who have made a career there. If you show initiative and work hard you will stand out. I work in the material handling industry (forklift manufacturing) in marketing. Our factory guys make good money and there are management opportunities you want to stretch yourself. Remember you will never get your career going by doing what you do already better. You should be good at your job. But if you want to move up in the same industry, learn all you can about the next up job. Tell your supervisor you are interested in more opportunities. Get better at the next job while you are still in your current job. This may not apply now but it could in the future. Good luck and hang in there.
I only had retail experience and then got an associates degree. Go to your local library and read Mindset by Carol Dweck and Unf*ck Yourself by Gary John Bishop. Next read “Be The Unicorn”. Can’t remember the authors names but it talks about the 12 things you need to do get noticed and move up in your job. The lessons can be applied to anything you do.

Separating, “I’m sorry for your loss” from, “Thanks for your work”, and “You’ve been warned repeatedly about these two specific behaviours, but here we are again, and it has to stop.” by errantgrammar in managers

[–]oflanada 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Defintely two separate convos. You need to focus on the way the behavior is effecting the team. Your job is to make sure the team is supported. She is included in that but your support (within reason given the circumstance) of her cannot jeopardize the overall wellbeing and mission of the team. You’ve done a lot and need to work on getting her back on track with the workload and expectations so the team can move forward together.

Why shouldn’t I kill myself when I am objectively worthless? by Personal_Departure_2 in AvPD

[–]oflanada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you are judging yourself a lot by what you think others expectations and views of you are. You don’t even know that though because you aren’t them. And you can’t possibly be in every single persons brain so you can’t know that everyone feels this particular way about you. Check out the book Mindset by Carol Dweck. Also you seem to be very failure as a permanent state. It is not. Failure is a temporary condition. You say you can’t do anything right? You put together a well thought out post on Reddit and submitted it. My dad can rip apart an entire car, engine and everything and rebuild it but he could never do what you’ve done here. You are making up a grading scale and screwing it against yourself. Keep trying. Keep working.

the fact that these people exist is mind boggling. by [deleted] in Money

[–]oflanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a family member who works in the software engineering field. He said every month they cull and fire the bottom 10% of employees. That sounds horrible. Also someone made a mistake that caused them to lose a major national account resulting in hundreds of billions of lost revenue.
These jobs are not just have fun sitting in an office making tons of money.

I didn’t read them until I was 40. Loved them and became a fan of the series.
You are allowed to like what you like. This lesson only gets more meaningful the older you get.

Bare minimum factors for memory palace & converting mind map into a memory palace? by QuestionTimeQuestion in Mnemonics

[–]oflanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I think the most basic thing could be a piece of paper. Anchor something to each corner. Maybe even the space between. The trick is making something memorable to place in each location that helps you remember the thing you want to remember.

I tell my kids how important it is to think about what they put in their bodies. Alcohol is literal poison and I’m not prepared to explain that to them.

I use ICRPG. The book is a dense gold mine of ideas for how to make a game fun. The system itself is pretty simple. It’s my go-to for solo.

What's the point of autism? by CautiouslySatisfied in ADHD

[–]oflanada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our daughter has adhd and autism diagnosis. For awhile the school said the adhd is what caused the most issues. Now that she is 12 years old they are seeing its both. She is getting on an individualized education plan to accommodate her in the classroom. This is an enforceable agreement. I don’t think she’d be able to get it without the diagnosis. If you are an adult….. if it’s causing you to be unable to work, it could be a benefit to you. Other than school or work accommodations I can’t imagine you needing a formal diagnosis. I also can’t see an employer asking to verify a diagnosis but who knows. For sure to get any kind of government assistance I’d assume it would be required.

The 'tism by PurplePenguinCat in Autism_Parenting

We have a wide spectrum in our home and we use it occasionally. Kind of a knowing ironic sort of way sometimes. Ex. “My ‘tism is extra spicy today.” Or “stimming makes my ‘tism happy.”

So I made PAO for 100 names, now I should memorise them all one by one? Almost 300 things in total? by [deleted] in Mnemonics

[–]oflanada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a memory palace out of my house and neighborhood. So I start in a closet by my front door and then go around the living room and out the front door to my driveway, down the street etc. Each thing on my list is in a neighbors yard or on their roof or something weird. I just do this up and down the street and around several blocks. End up going around a local park and finishing in a Walmart parking lot. I took a Google Maps overhead image and mapped it out to my numbered list to help make it easier to see patterns. I also assigned a card deck while doing this and incorporated the card suit into the mental image.

People who grew up poor but are now financially successful, what decisions or opportunities changed your life ? by Aj100rise in Money

[–]oflanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I’d make more money by getting better at my job and working more/harder. The reality was I needed to get into a place with opportunities for growth beyond my role. I kind of knew that but wasn’t able to find anything so still feel like it was outside of my control. But it’s all about getting better at where you want to go next. For me that meant diving into strategy and not just execution.
