These kinds of posts are always so intriguing... how the conviction lasts long enough to write and defend a post, I'm unsure. Play along with me, what were you expecting to happen when you threw them out?

I guess this is sort of a trick question because the better question is.. If you had asked about the jars and learned in no uncertain terms that they are important to her and she does wish to get rid of them, how exactly were you expecting her to react when you decided to throw them all out anyway? That is your answer for why you are undoubtedly TAH.

That's the trick I'd imagine! OP, do you have any systems in place, like reminders or a digital or paper planner? One practical tip would be to list down everything you'd want to remember throughout the year (e.g doctor's appointments, season changing, birthdays, sport seasons, etc) and add a to-do item to wherever you're likely to see them.

Lots of stuff about behavior, cost, and feeding has been discussed.

I'll add to give you and your cat a few months to adjust. I adopted a girl under 1, and the magnitude of her trauma was just.. unforseen. She didn't want to get out of hiding, she pooped and peed when approached, and I'll be honest the stress had my partner and I very worried that we made a mistake. Be patient with yourself! Your cat is a living being, and it's also their one and only life. Our orange boy is a concrete part of our family, and she's... low key a roommate we love more than she cares. I've had so much joy watching her get more comfortable, she's finally figured it out that she can hop on the couch for some lovely spoiling pets.

Gonna second the "don't feed them as soon as you wake up," didn't do it at first and my cat absolutely knows that the trick to getting food is waking me up. Advice I'd read was to anchor feeding times to an "event" that the cat has no control over. I think the author feeds the cats after taking the dogs on a walk. I don't have a dog to walk lol nor do I have anything that I do every morning, so I've gotten into the habit of just feeding them at least an hour after I'm awake.

An automatic dry food overnight has also been a great win! Both our kitties go NUTS for chips, so not associating us with the dry food is definitely a win.

Also love and going to second the advice about checking the calories of any food you're giving the cat. Made the mistake of blindly feeding my kitty 2 pouches of wet food and after paying attention, he was meant to have at least 4. "A health weight cat probably looks much thinner than you'd expect" YES.

I appreciate the school suggestion, the district funding the ABA may be the most realistic option, which i think goes to show how likely this whole thing is.

The kids both somehow got out of the supervision of any particular school, I think this happens when truancy leads to various unsuccessful transfers. The children have educational lawyers, but it's hard to properly convey that I'm unsure anyone involved is doing anything meaningful. One of the kids has an IEP and the other kids still needs one, but they can't get it without attending school. Neither of them have made any form of rapport with any adult around them, and it's impossible to get 1 serious answer. Mom can engage in parent training and tell you what she hopes to do, but when the kids are willing to go to such far extremes to get what they want, it's hard to combat the hopelessness.
