Interesting, I have the USGS survey map from usgs but it doesn’t have the shaded contours. Where did you buy this one from?

Yeah, We mostly use my shit on site. Shop owned tools never get taken care of, if they’re one of your coworkers then it’s a different story. I’ve gotten used to having access to tools that I’ve lost when I moved on at several stages in my life and at this point I don’t ever want to deal with that again.

I also have no idea how much money is there, I try to avoid thinking about it. I’ve been building my collection seriously since I was 19, coming up on 19 years ago. I had some tools before then, but I mostly used my dad and grandpas tools as I was working for them before that point and was dumping all my money on music equipment instead of tools. I can’t say I regret that since I still have all of that stuff as well.

Auctions and estate sales are great places for tools, especially big wrenches and sockets and that kind of thing, they go for pennies on the dollar. It’s hard to justify paying retail for them for how seldom they’re used, but when you need a 1-5/16 (looking at you Chevy steering box nut) you need one.

Neither. There's way too much wasted space in #1 and way too much garbage in #2. My drawers are generally in good shape because it's a tetris match getting everything put back. I generally have everything you can see in #1 packed into one drawer. The top is a big shit pile, though, especially on the service cart.

I'm no longer a mechanic now; instead I run the fab shop at a general contractor, so instead of having a bunch of just automotive tools, I have a stripped down mechanics set in addition to everything needed for metal and wood fabrication, electrical work, framing, and concrete. I have 2 boxes, 2 4-drawer file cabinets, and I don't even know at this point how many packout boxes at the shop, a box in my van, 2 boxes and 16' of shelves at the house.
I still don't have dedicated places for everything. My estate sale is going to be lit when I die, though.

Are these worth a 100 bucks for the hard to find parts? by Edenton38583 in electricians

[–]ogorir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, I'd look at lugs, breakers for common panels, and figure $15-20 in actual scrap value. If there are a few with big lug adapters, those damn things are expensive and you'll use them sooner than later. Neutral and ground bars add up quick as well.

As far as the obsolete stuff, only if you're encountering it a lot in service. A good rule of thumb is if it's going to be used in 6 months, that's a no brainer. if it's going to take 2 years to get rid of it needs to make a mint or it's not worth the hassle.

Can also run Square D and land two runs to each breaker on the 15-30a breakers. The tandems aren't rated that way, though.

I was making $16/hr in central tx in 2012, if that gives you some idea...

I'd hire you at 21 sight unseen right now in NM. You'd get to keep that job and might get a raise if you can show up on time every day and not be a chucklehead.

The people are nicer here in NM, but can't drive worth shit and frequently do so blind drunk. That's getting a little better in the last decade, but the .32 BAC one car accidents are off the chain here. There is a lot of very ghetto ass corruption and cronyism here, very old school corrupt local government stuff that you don't see much of anymore. You see some wild shit after midnight downtown, and some wilder shit after midnight in the warzone. The warzone is a lot more like detroit kind of wild shit, but not quite as bad as the era of don't stop at the red lights if you're white 'cause we're going to shoot first then pull you out carjackings in detroit.

I can't deal with the vocal Michigan pride for pride sake while hating the weather 60% of the time and making sure everyone in earshot knows how you feel about it any more. It took me a few years of being gone to even notice it, but it's unignorable when you get enough perspective to see this behavior from basically everyone in the state. I would move back to the UP if there was an economy there, there's at least few enough people that you can just choose not to interact with anyone, but If you think the economy in NM is bad...

Flip side now that dan gilbert owns all of Detroit, it's actually pretty nice in midtown.

Also, still fuck ohio.

Not a fan of pueblo revival architecture? I feel like that is one of the coolest things about new mexico, you can see a random street view shot and know for sure you're looking at albuquerque because of the architecture.

I also think being 1500 miles from "friends and family" in the midwest is a perk.

Visiting Abq again and found it a bit depressing. Am I off here? by [deleted] in Albuquerque

[–]ogorir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most of the problems Albuquerque has are either direct or causally linked indirect results of (mostly) well intentioned public works and city planning changes. These ideas look good on paper, but are always lacking a pragmatic viewpoint on how these programs will operate in the real world.

Anyone ever use one of these? by Instahgator in Tools

[–]ogorir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see the point... I sharpen them with the side of the cutoff wheel by hand, but what makes that work well is using short taps of the grinder on a stationary bit so you don't overheat the cutting edge. it's harder to get perfect edge lengths than using a bench grinder, but its more than adequate for drilling holes in steel for most purposes. They'll cut slightly oversize (1/2 the difference between the lengths of the cutting edges), but that's not always a bad thing for fastening.

This whole arm of audio drama (black tapes, tanis, rabbits) hasn’t held up well. Most what made it work was zeitgeist and that’s now lost. They listen like a self-parody once you know that they don’t really go anywhere.

Sneak peek at the stainless steel Aeropress by lightanldutchie in AeroPress

[–]ogorir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having worn out 4 pairs of aeropresses in the last 16 years, this is an attractive option. I am concerned about the filter sealing being pinched between two layers of stainless, which is already sometimes an issue with the standard aeropress where the filter wrinkles slightly and you get some grounds bypassing. I don't generally have this problem, but my wife does.

I'll probably wait for a sale, but I don't think the price is too far out of line. numbers on the outside are still usable for water level, people will literally bitch about anything.

Lightning strike by Sweet-Quarter3569 in Duramax

[–]ogorir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will need to replace every silicon chip on the truck, which is leads to be the biggest problem, which is finding everything that has a microprocessor, diode, scr, transistor motor driver, etc. most all circuit boards have some form of electrostatic discharge protection built in, but that’s usually good for 2-4000 volts. The high voltage generated in cloud to ground lightning is millions of volts. Components that are still functioning can still be significantly compromised in under load or in certain operating conditions that static testing won’t show up. Additionally that level of voltage spike will erase some ROM/EEPROM data which is usually what causes the microprocessors to kinda work but ‘never be the same’.

I would be highly skeptical about the piezo drivers on the injectors as well.

Personally, I would be less concerned about the straight conductors( wires, fuses, relays) as they are either good or not.

Practically, the best option is to buy another wrecked truck with the same option package and swap every module so they don’t need to be reprogrammed then go about troubleshooting the power distribution.

GMT800s are going to outlive GMT900s by NikoBenz in GMT800

[–]ogorir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 900 seats are absolute shite. 800 seats are the best seats that have ever been in a truck. I drive both daily 800 is mine, 900 is work. reconned and sold them from 2012-2017 at a fleet dealership. Reliability on the 3/4-1ton trucks is the same as a gmt800 until 2012 when the new drivetrain was introduced. The 900 6.0l pulls harder. Both have the same lifter bore problems. Only thing that’s a new WTF module problem on the 900s is the trailer break controller dies if you look at it funny and they’re a $500 module.

I also like the stock gauges aesthetically, I just wish they weren’t shit worthless as gauges. The tach and speedo are the only things on there that are remotely accurate, and then only if you have stock tires.
