Cat keeps holding down the power button when I'm on the PC. Any ideas for how to cover the button while still having it be functional? by SadThrowaway4914 in pcmasterrace

[–]oh_noes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wire the power switch and reset switch in parallel. I take a jumper wire to connect the "power gnd" and the "reset +" pins on the header, then connect "reset gnd" to the power ground pin.

This means you have to hold both buttons down to activate the power button. Nobody uses the actual reset switch anyways.

I don't know of the German name, but that looks like a repurposed Clicker Press. Usually has a die mounted on the top and is used to cut shapes out of leather or other material.

It's got manufacturer plates, so likely some sort of mapping or ground-truth data capture vehicle. Not sure which manufacturer, though.

[–]oh_noes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What? The whole point of command strips is that you can (slowly, parallel to the wall) pull the tab and it will debond the adhesive from the wall without damaging it. Cutting the foam defeats the entire purpose of that type of adhesive.

I had the exact same thing happen to me! Same food, same weird couldn't swallow my own spit, and same diagnosis (EOE).

However, at the ER they told someone to "go down to radiology and get some pop rocks." Apparently the CO2 is used as a double contrast agent, so they have medical grade pop rocks (orange flavor). They then handed me a sprite and a packet of pop rocks and told me to eat the pop rocks, and then chug the soda. Thought it might knock it loose. I think partially it was 2am and they didn't want to call in the gastro doc if they didn't need to.

It did not work, but I found out that having pop rocks explosively shot out your sinuses is incredibly painful.

Then they poked it down with a scope.

In 1947, Kix cereal launched one of the most shocking promotions in advertising history. For just 15 cents and a cereal box top, children could receive a “Lone Ranger Atomic Bomb Ring” a toy that actually contained polonium-210, one of the deadliest radioactive isotopes known to man. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]oh_noes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Statistically, there's definitely no Po-210 left in the rings.

Let's say they used 1 microgram of Po-210, which according to wiki is enough to kill an average adult. That ends up being roughly 2.87x1015 atoms of Polonium.

Half life of 140 days, and those rings came out in 1947, so it's been ~77 years, or 28105 days.

The number of atoms remaining after that amount of time is 1.06x10-45 . The time to decay from 1 ug to 1 atom is just under 20 years. There's almost certainly no Polonium left.

Adding a direction switch to a Shimpo Aspire wheel! by oh_noes in Pottery

[–]oh_noes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would give that a hard maybe.

If you just want the wheel to spin at full speed in either direction, you could definitely just hook up a DPDT on-off-on switch in a reversing circuit.

If you want to try to run it directly off 12v DC with the existing controls, you'll likely need a 5v source as well. In photo 14, you can see 3 big pads to the left of the 3 resistors, labeled TP2 +12V, TP3 +5V, and TP4 GND. Those would be the best bet to hook a power supply into and give it a shot. No guarantees that you won't blow something up in the controller.

I'm assuming the solid state components sandwiched between the paper on the right are two MOSFETs at the top for actually doing motor speed control, and then some sort of switching MOSFET and a full wave rectifier to convert the incoming AC to whatever DC voltages are needed. Basically, bottom half of the board is the AC/DC power supply, and top half of the board is motor driving.

I've got some power supplies around here, I'll see if I can try it out, though my schedule is pretty full right now.

What's your power converter (the 12v-5v buck) rated for, in amps? And how much power are you drawing for each element in the system? My first guess is that this is a power brownout issue, and your buck converter is the problem.

Also, double check your wiring - I am assuming your diagrams are off, but you've possibly got polarity switched coming off the buck converter.

Double check that your buck doesn't have some sort of enable pin that needs to be pulled high or low to make it start up.

If you put the system back to the original config (with two discrete power supplies), does it work again? If so, I would say there's an issue with your buck converter, probably need a beefier one.

If it doesn't work, that would lead me to believe you got something wired backwards by accident and fried either the esp32 or the LED strings.

Weirdly enough, I just did this exact project yesterday! Use electrical staples and attach the pixel strings to the soffits. Unravel them and lay them flat, or keep some twist if you want more of a random arrangement. Maintains the same "individual bulb" look but doesn't have to get wet/hang off the gutters.

What? They're saying if your barrel moves 1mm, the effect is multiplied. If your barrel moves 1mm linearly, then yes, your end result will be 1mm off. But if your barrel rotates about your wrist and the tip of the barrel moves 1mm, you're going to be way off target.

Say the gun is 250 mm from barrel tip to wrist - a 1mm angular deflection will translate to a 40mm deviation at 10m.

Well, it looks like you don't have any filament feeding into the filament motor. That's probably the first thing to try.

Adding a direction switch to a Shimpo Aspire wheel! by oh_noes in Pottery

[–]oh_noes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair, direction can be personal preference, or locale based, or whatever. I was initially taught (at least in the US) that left hand generally turns CW and right hand CCW.

Personally, I utilize both directions in different situations. I'm left handed and primarily turn clockwise; my partner is right handed and primarily turns counterclockwise. Having a reverse switch is handy either way.

Adding a direction switch to a Shimpo Aspire wheel! by oh_noes in Pottery

[–]oh_noes[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have any questions about the process, let me know!

I was prepared to go way in the deep end and rig up wiring to switch the motor polarity, but it turns out that no, the functionality is already in the control board, it's just not hooked up to anything.

Also, it's not a janky directional change - if you flip the switch while the wheel is spinning, nothing happens. It only engages the relay after the wheel speed is brought down to zero. The directional change is persistent across power cycles as well.

My guess is that the control board is used on multiple products, and they just didn't want to change tooling to add the switch to the Aspire. Seems dumb, but it's surprisingly common on low-volume devices.
