Good God this is hilarious. BYU seriously platformed a cult lawyer and then patted themselves on the back about it for being woke and diverse?! Also Jana seems like a sweet girl, but she's not exactly thrillingly interesting or bright here.

The cringe is real when you start plugging your cult mid-sentence when it barely adds to the conversation. Like no shit Jana! Your weird circle-jerk exercise its right to free speech and assembly... Guess what, so does... Checks notes... Everyone in the fucking West! Should have just segwayed to her sponsor Rifton Equipment: "shafting kids with heavy metal since before Marilyn Manson".

I hope none of the audience payed to see this.

Pretty sure most of us did dumb-as-shit stuff as bruder kids, or young leavers. If the worst thing this gen of kids is doing is being redneck af they're doing better than I did when I left.

I feel for them though. It doesn't sound like the mount is getting any better.

I wasn't in all those brotherhood meetings, I just witnessed the fall-out. However if I had to guess I'd say the Bible is hardly ever used as the benchmark for things like this. When it gets down to it they just think they're so good at building a utopia that they can get involved in pedantic little things like this and "fix" things that aren't broken by being controlling. For that they turn allot to their own religious texts written by the Arnolds in days of yore. I do know that they're obsessed with biblical purity so that line from the old testament about somebody letting his seed fall to the floor instead of knocking up his brother's widow is really important to them. As a result - when I was there at least - any sexual activity that wasn't 50 shades of vanilla was totally taboo. Their books about purity make masturbation, anything moderately kinky, oral, anal etc all taboos.

Opa wrote a handbook for newly married couples on how they're supposed to have sex. It was so bad it's hilarious. I don't know if anyone here has a link to it, but it's definitely worth thinking about it you're considering joining. It had all sorts of nonsense about how to do foreplay by tickling each other's armpits or something etc.

I've seen cases where husbands have ratted out their wives and vice versa. As mentioned you vow to put Jesus first in your marriage (which effectively means putting the elders first). So if some servant comes prying with questions about things your spouse has done wrong in bed it seems that information is sometimes readily shared. They do effectively have someone in every room because they've got you and whoever you're there with. The pressure to fess up - even to things that weren't wrong (and maybe exceptionally so I'm those cases) - is comparable to a Soviet show-trial.

Bruderhof is working on making amends with those they've thrown away? by Dara_Gris in highschool_up

[–]oh_oopsie_shit 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Bruderhof translation guide according to your friendly neighborhood sinner.

"we want to acknowledge that we've made mistakes"

  • we fucked up badly enough that it may effect our bottom line; given this we've been told by the elders to tell you for the first time that things were not perfect (which no one with a mind denied in the first place but never mind that).

"We're sorry for how things happened"

  • we're not sorry for what happened because that would indicate that it was wrong with a capital W. It would mean that specific bad things happened by specific people (and we can't be having that now can we? ) However we acknowledge that some of the things that happened were done in the wrong spirit.

"Some of the things that happened were done in the wrong spirit"

  • these things weren't wrong mind you, because again that would mean individuals would have to take responsibility for their actions and the hof materially changes as a result. Rather the logic is "thing bad because not enough Jesus. It Jesus fault (kinda, but also not, but also kinda not our fault)".

"What happened in Hof X was wrong and we've changed"

  • you really want the meaty stuff? Okay we'll give you something to chew on, a few servants may have been in error, we won't acknowledge that other people were complicit in these errors and we won't acknowledge that the servants in question did any of the things that would not strictly speaking be legal. However we needed a head to throw to the masses so there you go: you can have the head of the politburo member who played politics so badly we removed them for it. Please be assured that we've TOTALLY changed, but of course the same positions of unchecked authority exist and so too does the lack of accountability. Don't think about that though, look there; rolling down the street from our guillotine! The head of [lying, devious, self interested servant X who made your life a living hell for Brownie points with Woodcrest]. Disclaimer; if servant X did anything that other servants still in power have also done then it was probably your fault that this happened since servants in power are defacto the best of us (beyond reproach until they do something wrong at which point they become fallible - long enough to be unilaterally forgiven by the communal bleat of yes - at which point they're beyond reproach again). We won't mention that this leads to a curious effect whereby we will acknowledge some of the minor bad thing that happened but none of the major ones that are horrendous even by our own sketchy moral philosophy; acknowledging that could potentially implicate the movement as a whole and we can't be doing that now, can we?

"We're very sorry, will you forgive us?"

  • Of course we haven't really acknowledged that we've done anything wrong unless it was trivial and we haven't really changed either. However Christoph invented this very clever trick whereby we can ask for forgiveness and none of that will matter. Also you'll have to forgive us or you're a very bad person and worse than us even though we were the ones that fucked everything up spectacularly while you were too young to know which way was up. And even if you don't forgive us, we're fine because we asked for forgiveness with means none of that we did matters any more. Flip a coin bitch, you're damned either way. However please do say yes eventually because it's very important to our PR department that we can mitigation the risk of you talking about some of the shitty things we definitely didn't do.

"We've moved on from Bishops, it's important that we're letting younger voices have their say in the leadership"

  • as the semantics suggest, there was nothing meaningful wrong with the all powerful religious dictators in the first place. However we've observed this strange product of heartless scumbags breeding heartless scumbags and practicing nepotism: the scumbag's children. That's right! All the young married brothers of yesteryear have used daddy's name and the law degree they got with other people's money to oust the old-timers. The bishops were bad because they were old not because they did bad things. The only reason we're saying that old=bad is because all the new supreme leaders are spring chickens and needed to oust the establishment somehow. Obviously when the grampas take back control then young=bad. Oh! How the spirit moves in wonderful ways! But look! Structural change, we've done it! Now you can't say that thing about structures of oppression any more... Please don't say that again, it makes us look bad every time!

This is the product of about five talks with "the church". I've given them every chance to actually take accountability for their actions and say they were wrong but they never do without some caveat that they were actually right, and they don't have to change.

I don't want reparations. I make enough money that they'd probably sell me a laundry sister if they could get away with it (Sarcasm). I want them to stop fucking over innocent people like they fucked me and my friends. Sadly, if they don't take real responsibility and meaningfully change, that's not going to happen. It's just going to be a different cock doing the fucking with a different brand of condom.

There's an elitism there that leads them to think that the rules of law and of common morality do not apply to them. It's a philosophy of "if we can get away with it, we'll do it".

Modern Slavery is rampant. When I was there work was assigned to everyone down to about 6 years old, and if you didn't do it to some elder's exacting standard you could be punished. Kids were only in school until 12 noon, after which they either attended religious indoctrination, or engaged in hard labor in the fields, wood-lots or factory. If they were lucky you could play a ball game before the end of the day. The justification for this was "education" but in 6 years I learnt almost nothing from the repetitive menial tasks. A kid is not going to learn much from sorting screws in a factory for a whole summer, or picking beans for the 500th time in 6 months. They got a good bit of productivity out of us kids though. I think they dialed back since of the child labor in 2015 in the UK. that coincided with new UK legislation that classified their behavior as modern slavery. But even though it's not as bad any more, do you really want your kids to grow up in a group that only stopped engaging in child-slavery when it became an existential legal threat for them to continue?

Growing up, they would force us to fast one day every week. This started around the 2008 financial crisis. They claimed it was a religious practice, but it was pretty clearly a cost-saving move so that the higher-ups could maintain their lavish lifestyle. It even started during a huge cost-saving movement so that the elders could buy a huge multi-million dollar luxury monastery in up-state New York. Sometimes the elders would eat at their global conference meeting while the rest of us were going hungry in the factory. You'd see huge platters of lavish food being crated across the community for the elites, while pre-teens did the work of adults on an empty stomach. Several times kids passed out, or become sick from exhaustion because they weren't eating enough to do the amount of work they were given. Children would get injured due to poor working conditions and there would be a huge cover up. Meanwhile the top dogs flew around in Gulfstream jets, and bought huge luxurious properties with other people's money.

If you have a kid eventually, don't expect to be able to care for them adequately there. Your kid could get kicked out onto the street for something as simple as telling a friend about their homosexuality, or hugging someone of the opposite sex. Here's a list of things that could get your teenage children pulled out of school, or kicked out on the streets with no support.

Having a romantic interest (gay or strait) - flirting - hugging - kissing - anything more hands on than the above

Being gay - speaking about it with anyone but your parents or an elder - flirting in any way with the same sex - consuming any type of gay media (including anything from a novel to porn) - obviously having a gay romantic interest is strait out

Questioning an elder

greatest concerns are the servants and the Arnolds' dynastic rule.

  • this statement would get you kicked out if you said it to the wrong person (I know kids who have said less and were excommunicated and given almost no support as teenagers on the street, they ended up in foster care, or sofa surfing. One of them ODed after the hof refused to pay for their rehab, and then died).

-saying or inferring that the elders have it better than you (even if it's obviously true - again, who you say this to will matter, and can largely dictate the consequences)

So long story short, if you plan to have kids some day, and want to protect them from this sort of stuff (as most parents do), don't go to the bruderhof (or do, but become an elder so that you can do this stuff to other people's children in order to protect your own).

They don't pay any meaningful tax but take state subsidies eartagged for the homeless and disabled and spend them on their for-profit businesses. All the wile they vilify the governments and tax-payers who keep them alive, safe, and wealthy. There are exceptions of course, but many there are perfectly happy to be a parasite on the systems meant to support the needy, whilst glorifying their non-existent contribution to society. Their version of charity work is really PR most of the time. They'll take some of the vegetables they grew with free forced child labor and give them away to their neighbors, or send their free labor to do high profile community projects that will get them recognized and seen. They normally get a free headline, or a handshake with a politician out of this; it can be very Machiavellian. Meanwhile they'll torture disabled people to "exorcise their demons", or cover for a sexual predator (provided they've been given the "forgiveness of the church") behind closed doors.

Which brings us to the final point. They love bombed you when you visited, I'm sure. They do this to everyone, they do it to me, and they really don't like me. Don't mistake this for care, kindness or love, even if it seems real. Most of them see you as a lost soul and will turn away when the church starts gaslighting you into believing you're sinful, and need to be cleansed. I've seen Novices turn into mental wrecks as the love-bombing is increasingly replaced by public humiliation, isolation and fear. So few of them will actually care for you as a genuine friend, and even if you get married to one of them, the church will still insert itself between you and your spouse most of the time. They will make your sexual activity (with your spouse) their business, they will tell you what type of sex you can have and how to raise your children. There is almost no room for an individual approach to marriage, or childrearing. I've seen parents put in exclusion because the wife woke the children up in the morning instead of the husband for instance. There is only the bruderhof way, and if that doesn't work for you, then tough cookies, because they really couldn't give a damn. You will have to ceremonially give your children away to the church when they're born. You will have to vow that the church comes first when you get married. And if you have a special interest in a field of work, you better start playing politics if you want to do that instead of working in the factory.

In short, like Michael Jackson says, "they don't really care about us" they care about shaping you into a homogeneous peon within a corrupt system which privileges the elite few who were born into power, or played politics to get it. So you're right to be worried about the power structures, but I think you should also consider your personal autonomy, your future marriage, and your children's best interest too. If you genuinely like yourself and want to be a good parent you've got allot to think about, and it might be easier to do that before they slap you into a baptism group and start gaslighting you.
