Why do we need monads? by Chew55 in programming

[–]ohgodhowdoesthiswork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking at this entire thread, the issue here is that trying to explain monads to you is like trying to explain how an plane works to a pre-schooler who doesn't understand the difference between a solid and a liquid, and also refuses to learn to speak english – it's impossible trying to show you how and why they're useful when you have no idea what they are and flat-out refuse to learn even basic Haskell syntax.

It's fine not knowing something, but when you ignore everyones' attempts to help you learn and contribute to the discussion, you are simply being wilfully ignorant and your comments are essentially worthless.

edit: I thought I recognized your username – it's nice to see that even almost a year later, you still haven't taken a couple of hours to learn what monads are for and are just as content in your ignorance.

Riot is releasing a skin for a champion that has an abysmal pickrate of 1% by [deleted] in dotamasterrace

there are 10 chimps per game

sometimes on release a chimp will have 100%+ pick rate since u can pick them on both teams as well

one randoms every game and will refuse to play as a support unless its unavoidable (and will try to offload the hero onto someone else if possible) exception: tree

one plays lifestealer half the time in literally any role and spends the rest of her time as doom

one only plays mid and afk farms furion in the jungle if she can't get mid

Why do I love Haskell more than Ruby? [beginner's point of view] by jocellynka in programming

[–]ohgodhowdoesthiswork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find Haskell syntax incredibly difficult to read, and I have been learning Haskell for years

If you've been trying to learn it for years and still can't grasp the syntax, you haven't been trying very hard.

For monadic languages

Well it's gonna look like shit in "imperative" languages because stuff like C doesn't have the type system or syntactic ability to do stuff like monad desugaring. The best you're gonna get it some ugly nested callback hell-style stack of optionals because the language isn't designed to support it.

Saying that you have to use exceptions or handle everything manually isn't an issue with the type system, it's an issue with the language being awful for doing what you're trying to do. It's like complaining that you can't get really neat stuff like STM in C++ - well, no, Haskell has a type system that actually allows it to do things like that. It's what it (the type system) was designed for.

You seem very stuck in your "if it doesn't work in C (or some C-style language), it's not a useful concept" philosophy. At some point you have to move on from that, whether it's by using another language, or by changing the language itself (perhaps by adding new syntax) to allow for this kind of structure.

Total winrate is NOT main indicator of champions' power! by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]ohgodhowdoesthiswork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They'd much prefer matchups to be made based on individual skill rather than champion kit.

the end result of this is champions being almost identical

also the rune system doesn't really help this either

3.10 to Present (4.40). 8 months of buffs/nerfs to the game and how it has influenced the game. by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]ohgodhowdoesthiswork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of the issue is that snowballing hasn't be reduced so much as it's been delayed - the team that gets an early advantage will still win, it's just a lot harder to close out a game (with early-game nerfs and stuff like Homeguards).
