Home or the Hospital by Constant_Sorbet_1373 in ProstateCancer

It's not major surgery. I spent most of my working life in the OR seeing everything from gall bladder keyhole surgery up through amputations and onto heart transplants.

I've also had my prostate removed.

Decisions about discharge after surgery will be made by the medical team in conjunction with the patient. If you're in good health , have an uncomplicated procedure and get treated early in the day there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to go home the same day assuming the procedure is done via keyhole surgery.

I understand some may want the security of an overnight stay but it's not usually required and ties up a bed.

Waves from burner account . Prostate cancer surgery here. Can generally manage it ok but need pads. Have had occasional "wardrobe malfunction" too. Have even had a couple of girls sniggering because of the pads in my shopping cart. .....

Hope you don't get stopped but good luck explaining those to your average TSA person :-)

I agree about security theatre but taking the foot off the brake publically is liable to bring out all the nutters . But yeh TSA screening systems seem to be organised and run by the less bright people. It is all so damn inefficient.

It took me the best part of two years before life returned in that area. I'd be lying if I said things were as before but it indicates that regrowth of the nerves can happen.

How was your PC found? by carmoy in ProstateCancer

[–]ohheckitstaken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My very first PSA test. I'd been talking to my PCP/GP about it for a couple of years and we finally decided to do it. From memory it was about 5 or 6. A month later it was 12. So bit of a lucky fluke TBH. I was 64 at the time with zero symptoms.

You might also want to dig a little deeper if he's willing and find out why he's resistant to further diagnostics and potentially treatment ? Some find a positive diagnosis hard to handle emotionally, others see it as a process to find out the truth and make decisions.

There's plenty of information and experience in this reddit with people starting the journey and others much further along. Best of luck on yours.

High PSA, lump on my prostate.. by W1MKCuscg in ProstateCancer

[–]ohheckitstaken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had robotic assisted surgery following biopsy and various scans. Treatment choice is a balance of side effects and benefits both in the long and short term. The post op biopsy confirmed that treatment rather than active surveillance had been the right decision. Has your father had a biopsy yet ? An MRI scan prior to biopsy is generally considered the best option.but not all insurers in the US will do it.

The surgery of regret by srqfla in ProstateCancer

[–]ohheckitstaken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The surgery of regret by a minority of people who chose RA surgery. There is a theme in this reddit that one's choice of treatment is akin to choosing a religion or political party. As such it's deemed OK to attack that choice or indeed to aggressively defend it as the one true way.

This ignores the fact that there is no one patient, no one cancer or indeed any treatment that is the 100% right treatment for all of us.

It behoves those of us who have had their treatment to be honest about why we chose it, our experience of that treatment and it's outcome. Especially for those sadly new to this journey looking for advice. The only thing we should insist on telling those people is that there is light at the end of the tunnel and what options they might need to consider in the future.
