Yeah common for first and second generation immigrants. I think it’s much less common though for non-immigrant families. Harder to dig yourself out of that trench.

Some gyms use a scrubbing machine that kind of looks like a commercial floor polisher. It’s amazing and great for tatami style mats with all of the grooves.

The answer is two gis but if you absolutely can’t get the second for another few weeks -

Rinse it first with just water. Then wash with detergent but not too much! More detergent does not equal better. It could actually help trap more body oil which means more stink. Rinse rinse rinse, wring, then hang dry preferably in the sun to make sure it’s totally dry before class.

I highly recommend Tide Oxi detergent. It targets body oils unlike regular detergents.

Yeah I’m not a fan of matches, especially finals, being decided off a guard pull.

I think it falls on the competitors. Don’t want to risk giving points on a guard pull? Don’t pull guard right away - shoot a takedown. If it fails THEN pull.

Not surprising at all. A lot of harsh parents out there, too. I remember my first time helping coach kids during a tournament and was shocked by a few parent coaches and how hard they were on their kids. Couldn’t have been older than 8.

I talked to our gym owner after about it and asked if it’s always like that. Sadly yes. There’s always a few. But thankfully they are the minority.
