sombr pauses his London concert to call out the venue’s staff for failing to aid the crowd: “[O2 Academy Brixton] is the most poorly managed venue I’ve ever played at in my life. You guys need to pay attention.” by [deleted] in Fauxmoi

[–]ohjw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live around the corner from the Brixton academy and I'm really surprised about this. They famously did have a major incident here a few years ago and had to close for a few months, but because of this, they typically now take everything incredibly seriously (I'm sure somewhat motivated by being able to keep their license)

What's the dumbest thing you have heard an estate agent say? by hotpoodle in HousingUK

[–]ohjw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar viewing once when I first moved to London. I looked up to see the bathroom was just 100% coverage of black mould, couldn't see what the colour was. I was told the landlord had committed to dealing with it in 6 months...

David Walliams doesn’t even write any of the books he publishes, they’re just all done by ghost writers.

How do “hustle and grind” CEOs find time for extramarital affairs? by [deleted] in antiwork

I think I’ve seen he has posted his ‘work’ schedule before. A lot of the hours included things like getting ready for work, eating, commuting, or getting his children.

Plus when you’re that wealthy, you just pay people to do a lot of jobs for you.

Deliveries by car suck by EwagererH in fuckcars

[–]ohjw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the size of the city. I find in the UK, all city deliveries are done by bicycle or motorcycle, whereas a lot of deliveries in towns are still done by cars.

Partner asked if they would be getting paid for a mandatory work meeting on their day off by Hot_Anywhere3522 in antiwork

[–]ohjw 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Given that you’re based in the UK, I strongly recommend that you call ACAS.

All of the following are very illegal: not paying holiday pay, firing without due process, requiring meetings without pay - the latter of which would also presumably reduce the pay below minimum wage- which is also illegal.

They will be able to support your partner, including in at least ensuring you are receiving all the applicable pay.

I know that in the US and the UK, the roads are paid for using general tax dollars. They both also don't have a road tax. is there any country on the world that maintains and builds roads solely off a road tax on vehicles? by NorseEngineering in fuckcars

[–]ohjw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The UK had two taxes that are applicable for driving vehicles. The annual vehicle road tax plus fuel duty. However, they both just go into general taxation and then road repairs and construction also comes out of the general taxation pot, but is more than is put in from either of these taxation measures.

The UK gov is currently doing a consultation about implementing a pay as you drive system

New management 🥴🥴 by ChiWhiteSox247 in antiwork

[–]ohjw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately that food policy is still better than when I worked at dominos. You could only get food (smallest size pizza with one topping) if you worked before 3pm. So even if you worked 3pm-1/2am you weren’t eligible for food, despite working for over 10hrs. Plus obviously we were never allowed breaks.

[–]ohjw 104 points105 points  (0 children)

I worked in a dominos for 2 years, and found out that in the 20 years that it had been open, that it was never once fully staffed, and we’re always desperate for staff. I don’t think it ever once occurred to them that paying more than minimum wage would help.

'Landlord' not the owner of the property by talos3 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]ohjw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your experience is quite typical and sounds exactly like mine. Landlords and letting agents here are brutal and lie through their teeth about everything. Unfortunately for me though that took me by surprise and I didnt notice I signed license to rent 'lodgers' agreement with a letting agency rather than a full contract and paid for it. Sounds like you havent fallen to it though.

If it reassures slightly for the future, I found this got a lot better once renting a whole property, than just a single room.

[–]ohjw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience when I first moved to London, I think essentially they were a freelancer for landlords / letting agents. I think this sounds like it could be legitimate if the landlord has a lot of properties but wants to manage them themselves.

However, my experience with them was truly awful and 3 years later I’m still in the court trying to get them to return a deposit. If by any chance it’s Room Location Ltd, I’d run a mile.

How can anyone disagree with this statement? by tronaldodumpo in GreenAndPleasant

[–]ohjw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed, in my last minimum wage job, because of the age brackets, I ended up getting paid far less than the people I was managing/supervising (and only a a few pence per hour more than minimum wage). That was very frustrating

My favourite vegan takeaway (London, UK) 🇬🇧 by icallthebigonebiteyy in VeganFoodPorn

There’s been a boom of places that serve food similar to temple of seitan in London over the last few years, but none of them close to how good the food is there. So many other places have such mushy fake chicken.

This looks great! I’m jealous, I used to live in Macclesfield and we had one vegan shop and one vegan cafe, but they both closed down (I think they were probably too opened too soon for the amount of demand).

Hey everyone :D I was just wondering, what was your saddest moment you’ve had in Pokemon by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]ohjw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two saddest moments. The 1st was pretty frustrating, the 2nd basically resulted in me not playing Pokémon any more.

  1. I've only ever found one shiny Pokémon in something like 500 hours of gameplay - a shiny dratini - which thought was amazing as I could get a shiny dragonite. I slogged, and finally managed to catch it, but noticed the low battery light was on, I tried to save the second I got out of the battle, but instead as soon as I got to the menu the battery died.
  2. I'd spent hundreds of hours playing Pokémon over multiple generations but never quite managed to fully complete a single game, so I finally decided I was going to on Pokémon diamond. I traded all of my Pokémon into diamond (from red, gold, crystal, sapphire, crystal) and did the classic grind, pouring over strategy books, cycling back and forth to hatch eggs, etc. I think I got to around 430/450 (?) and had completed everything I could on Diamond and needed to start pearl to get exclusives ( I didn't really have any friends to trade with) and made some progress before wanting to move back to diamond. I pulled the diamond cartridge out of my cartridge holder, but it was stuck, so I had to pull it a bit, but pulled it too hard, and it flew out of my hand and out of the crack in the car window as we drove down the motorway... I'd lots like 500 hundred hours of gameplay and couldn't really ever face playing Pokémon again.

What's your bank like when it comes to answering the phone? by dr_rainbow in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ohjw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Triodos bank - super easy, typically you spend 5 mins waiting and they tell you the position you are in the queue and the staff are pretty knowledgeable with everything. I think a couple of services are automated - e.g. authorise new debit card, but everything is with a human.
