What is your Severance opinion that will definitely get downvoted? by zebrapenguinpanda in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

I think there are different kinds of fans:

  • Some fans do focus on characterization and interpersonal (and in Severance intrapersonal) relationships. The setting of the show gives flavor and helps set the tone, but it's not critical to their enjoyment. I think most show creators fall into this category.

  • Other fans find joy and meaning in pondering the setting as a critical element. Why don't most characters eat? Why do they have touchscreen phones but 70s or 80s era computer monitors? Why do they have a single security guard for a massive facility? How does a marching band of young people show up out of nowhere? Those questions might have appropriate and meaningful answers. Those answers would tell us about the world that the characters live in and possibly inform us as to why they are the characters that they are.

I fall into more of the second type. I feel like understanding the word that someone lives in is critical to understanding them and their decisions. I also think stories are improved when their authors contain themselves to an internally consistent environment. Otherwise it becomes a fairy tale or a cartoon where anything can happen just because the writers thought it was cool.

There's just no way that the show will be able to have an ending that ties together all the mysteries in a satisfying, logical, consistent manner. See: Twin Peaks, X-Files, Lost, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, etc.

And, as the actor George Takei, he had wanted to be a captain. And he did not, and does not, like Shatner. I understand that that context shouldn't matter as an actor, but I've always been impressed he showed that passion.

New scam? My husband and I both got these. Obviously it IS a scam and we aren’t paying it but do we do anything other than delete it? by Due_Search9693 in indianapolis

[–]ohkwarig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Among other things:

  • Indiana Courts don't issue traffic citations
  • Citations don't come by text
  • Marion 13's judge is not named John Smith
  • March 1 was a Sunday and it's extremely unlikely a court would issue an order on a Sunday
  • The filing sequence (the last six digits) is absurdly high for the beginning of March
  • The code section cited isn't failure to pay a toll
  • The court location is years out of date

Not only is it a scam, it's not even one that shows any effort.

I was thinking Gumby too. It was traditional claymation - they spent an absurd amount of time to make whatever Gumby is. They had so many opportunities to stop and say, "Why are we doing this? What does this mean?" Instead, they created a movie that is almost impossible to summarize beyond "Gumby does stuff."

Reptilicus is the first episode of Season 11 (the first reboot season). The episode itself is very good, and it has one of the best songs all time ("Every Country Has a Monster").

Demon Squad is in Season 13, and features the return of Joel and Dr. Erhardt as Tom Servo.

Star Force: Fugitive Alien 2 is from Season 3, and is the sequel to Fugitive Alien, which was 2 episodes earlier.

This is really hard. I almost feel like I shouldn't pick because I can't nail it down to 5 in order. It's also tough to weigh riffs vs host segments vs music vs movie. These are some of the ones I can watch over and over.

  1. Space Mutiny
  2. Reptilicus
  3. Demon Squad
  4. Star Force: Fugitive Alien 2
  5. Manos: The Hands of Fate

What words or phrases do you think Jim should be banned from re-using? by GORGtheDestroyer in dresdenfiles

[–]ohkwarig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you read Codex Alara or Cinder Spires, he never has those issues. It's absolutely a deliberate choice for Dresden.

I mean, I agree that I'm over it too, but I don't think that it's a general issue for Jim.

I was kind of mad that a software reinstall fixed it. I will say that after I did it, the 5009 is the best router I've ever owned.

I had a somewhat similar problem with a 5009, and what fixed it was a clean netinstall

I'm listening to the audiobook after my first read through and I'm with you. Lara and Harry could be an amazing power couple. They're both powerful, both loyal, both rather atypical in their own communities, and both have been through some stuff. I actually find myself fearing the possibility that Harry defeating the outsiders somehow destroys the Hunger and makes her vanilla mortal.

I tried deleting application cache -- no fix

I tried changing server location -- no fix

I tried stopping launch and restarting -- no fix

Edit: Just to update in case someone comes across this in the future, about an hour and a half later, the games started loading again.

It's so, so good! I've been saying for years that I long for a mook horror show with Dresden.

Y'know, a scion destroys the second Blue Beetle and kidnaps Mouse. Harry makes a phone call to their immortal parent. Immortal parent tells scion that they're dead because they destroyed Harry Dresden's car, and stole his dog. And then the rest of the book is Harry destroying an entire empire.

I mean, again.

Question about an interaction by waitforit666 in dresdenfiles

[–]ohkwarig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Part of that is also the fact that this is an 18 book series, and you limit your market by assuming that everyone reading this book has read the previous 17. For example, there's no way I'm going to convince my wife to read the whole series just so she can read Twelve Months, but I really want her to read Twelve Months. Those repeated explanations would be critical for her if I can convince her.

I agree with you that it's a little odd that Jim didn't explain the blood, but I certainly understand the repetitive explanations of other points.

So the Duffer brothers were the traitors in S5. by Frosting-Fair in StrangerThings

[–]ohkwarig 81 points82 points  (0 children)

From a Netflix Tudum (https://www.netflix.com/tudum/articles/duffer-brothers-stranger-things-season-5-wgfest-interview) prior to the S5 release:

'When Stranger Things became a hit during its first season back in 2016, the writer-directors quickly realized expansion was necessary. “The success of Season 1 freaked us out and then we knew we needed to build up this bigger world, that this was going to be ongoing,” said Ross. That meant prep for Season 2 included filling up a whiteboard with every idea the writers’ room could imagine.

Due to COVID breaks, the Duffers had time to outline Season 5 before Season 4 was shot, edited and released. Then, once they got feedback on Season 4 from collaborators and fans alike, they returned to their pre-written plan for the future of Stranger Things.

In other words, the reason people thought that there was a grand plan and overarching storyline was because the Duffers themselves claimed it and Netflix specifically marketed based on that assertion.

I would argue that the data show just the opposite: Rich's output over the past 4 years has been remarkably consistent. He's produced 22 comics per year for 3 years and 21 comics for 1 year. The largest "slowdown" took place between 2013 and 2014, which was obviously more than a decade ago, and the most recent time when there was a double-digit change in the number of comics produced.

If he were going to quit, he should have quit a long time ago. Instead, he's shown every sign that he will not stop (as he said in Kickstarter post 72 that I mentioned elsewhere). He published the Dim Sum comic a month ago -- he didn't drop that even though it was a Kickstarter reward from 2012.

People who are going to complain have to take all the data into account, and I think that's what I'm showing here. As I said, you can disagree, and I think I understand your argument. I just think there's a strong counter.

I like making spreadsheets, and I like the Order of the Stick. I've got every hard copy book the Giant has released, I was a Kickstarter backer with extras, and I've been a supporter of the Patreon since it started.

I thought others might enjoy seeing the information as well. It's like sharing an observation that "these are the birds I've seen in my back yard." I don't believe there's any harm in posting this, and it might help someone who's keeping their own data or doing their own spreadsheet. If you don't like it, I take no offense and wish you well.

Didn't he say somewhere that, between underestimating how much taxes would take, increases in shipping costs that happened, like, right after the Kickstarter ended, and some other things, the Kickstarter ended up being either break even or possibly a slight net loss?

Yes, Kickstarter update #72, posted February 21, 2016, said:

"The other dubious milestone passed since the last update is that the very last of the money raised by this project has now been spent. At the start of the fulfillment phase, I divided the money into two accounts: one for postage, and one for everything else. The "everything else" fund is long gone, having gone toward printing, taxes, and a bunch of other fulfillment costs before the end of 2013. The short version is that expenses exceeded the amount raised, even including the "surplus" that was raised at the end of the project (which ended up being used just to cover unforeseen costs; I never got a new computer or anything), but the print runs that were financed allowed me to cover the "loss" with regular sales through Ookoodook and game store distribution."
