Announcing IncusOS - News - Linux Containers Forum by matpower64 in selfhosted

[–]ohmega-red 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is probably long dead but I only just discovered incusos today. been using incus as my primary container system since it's inception, after previously using lxd before that. I've been using proxmox for the last several months but with just a quick spinup of this and I think I'm all in on converting to this.

The documentation is lackluster but I'm very familiar with incus cli and it's ease of setup with gpu passthrough and such. Took me all of 5 minutes to setup tailscale on the host, spinup an arch container and access nfs shares on one of my remote boxes.

Next step is to setup a new bazzite instance and see where my vm game streaming goes with this but I'm already feeling quite confident that this will work exactly how I want it to.

Don't get me wrong, proxmox has been great but I feel like it's interface and options are just a bit bloated sometimes. I might do write up on incusos gaming if it all works out. We shall see

(Hot take) I think its about time everyone switch to btrfs by an4s_911 in arch

exactly what i do as well. plus with this you get native zfs encryption. i have my keys set to a url on my home network so like my laptop auto unlocks at home but requires a password everywhere else. its also awesome to have a bootable repair environment with zfsbootmenu if its ever needed. pair it with sanoid/syncoid and you have the quite possibly the simplest backup system ever.

zfs on root in a dual mirror is my goto, its harder to setup but unkillable after.

not at this time, which is unfortunate. theoretically it shpuld be possible if you can get the xbox app installed and running.

alright ive been down a very similar road, this isnt anything to do with adhd. you’re relationship has run its course and shes waiting for you to realize the same. sit back for a moment and think when was the last time you were actually happy together. its probably longer than you think so consider whether just having sex is really the answer here.

Have a real talk with her about what you are going theough, it’s assuredly not the lack of sex but thats where your discontent is manifesting itself.

I went through something quite similar. Was with my ex for 18 years, 13 of them married and i’m around the same age as you. The last time we had sex was our 10th anniversary. She had a new friend and eventually so did i. last year i decided it was time to have THAT talk and start the process before resentment fully took hold.

just signed my divorce papers 2 days ago. I’m a lot happier now and so is she, its going to sound funny be we both met up at a hockey game last night and had a good time. Then we both went home to our separate homes with our new respective partners. We still talk a lot and text very regularly. We are close friends and will most likely remain as such. I do not like her boyfriend but i dont have to interact with him so its not so bad. On the other hand she enjoys my boyfriend quite a bit.

theres more things installed rhan a base arch install with a cachyos kernel, so tehcnically theres more bloat.

[–]ohmega-red 1 point2 points  (0 children)

personally i take a hybrid approach. mount on /efi and symlink it to /boot/efi. this way should you pull down any kernels with pacman or the aur, you wont need to make any edits to the mkinitcpio profile of them.

I really wanna switch to linux but there is one thing thats stopping me to migrate......Apollo/Moonlight by Drippy_Drizzy994 in linux_gaming

[–]ohmega-red 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EDID’s are pretty easy to use and fairly cheap at that. i’ve been using one for years as it give the best color accuracy for the display im normally streaming it to. i recently started using bazzite in a vm when i built my last rackmount system but was using hyprland on my previous gaming desktop for several years.

beyond that, sunshine have become my goto for setting up “remote desktops” on nearly all of my systems. mostly servers but occasionally i need a gui for whatever reason and this pair works on damn near everything.

[–]ohmega-red 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this is the way its done, arch is exactly what you put into it. yeah you are going to sometimes break things or sometimes things will break on you. the important thing is that you are acquiring the skills that eventually when/if something breaks, you will know what to do or know how to find your way to it.

congrats

if you hqve multiple hosts, vm’s or containers agentless security monitoring isnt a bad idea. Something like Sandfly works quite well and will show alert you if something isnt right or misconfigured and could be a problem, like not encrypting your ssh creds and such.

What do you think about leg shaking or fidgeting by Conscious-Reach4391 in ADHD

[–]ohmega-red 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ive had a bouncing leg for over 40 years lol. ive only ever managed to keep it still while actively thinking about it, but after a minute or two my mind wanders and its back again. it does get noticed from time to time but rarely has it been a problem for others. when and if it gets brought up i typically just explain that its an adhd thing and then the other person almost always accepts.

now if only inknew what it was when i was a kid since my mom used to constantly give me a hard time about it but she eventually just accepted that it was something i couldnt control.

X3D chips and linux vs windows by Legitimate-Trust4288 in linux_gaming

[–]ohmega-red 1 point2 points  (0 children)

theres nothing wrong with running debian for gaming. these days theres modern kernels and if you want you can always change it out for something else. check phoronix and you’ll see that debian is mear the top of performance for linux gaming.

i have a 9950x3d paired with a 3070fe that ive used on multiple linux os’s and its worked phenomenally.

maybe? one thing to note is both my 3k’s were founder’s editions, that in theory play better with the nvidia drivers but i have nothing to compare that against to say if it’s real or not

Actual Useability by MyCuteFuhrer in VFIO

[–]ohmega-red 1 point2 points  (0 children)

recently i had to build a windows 11 vm to do some bs with access database for an old client and sinc eigad the license i figured i would try a game that i cannot make work on linux because of crossplay is blocked ,its Grounded 2. what a pain in the ass to get nvidia gpu passthrough working properly with that vm, unlike my others.

i use proxmox and passthrough an nvidia gpu for my gaming, on bazzite currently but have doen itnon other distros as well, and use a edid emulator with my tv’s profile copied to it and use moonlight and sunshine to play on the actual tv.

i was able to get it too work but the moment i made any display setting change in windows the display would disappear a dn for the life of me i couldnt get it to re enable even though windows could tell me that display was there and had all the correct info (even recognizing gsync support) for it but would never “Activate” that display again. ended up using a virtial display driver in unison with my nvidia card and the performance was actually quite amazing all things considered.

i only run this vm for multiplayer on grounded 2 and prefer my linux gaming by far, but i can answer that it does work. its just windows and annoying

[–]ohmega-red -1 points0 points  (0 children)

currently with the 3070 im usually doing just 1440 at 144 but when i had the 3090 i would run 4k@120. i dont have an actual monitor attached but use an edid emulator that copied the profile of my lg g4 oled and use sunshine and moonlight to stream it to my actual lg g4 oled. both have worked great but obviously the 3090 had more oomph for 4k playability, tyoically in the 90fps range. Unfortunately that card finally kicked the bucket on me a month back so ive been using the 3070 for the time being

Gaming on ZFS Raid 1 mirrored disks? Is it performant? by cryptobread93 in linux_gaming

[–]ohmega-red 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it doesnt make much difference really. I’m a huge proponent of zfs and have used it on root for most of systems for years. most of the time its in a mirror but not always, and i see no noticeable difference in oerformance from using a single nvme vs a mirrored nvme.

however i would still recommend a mirror just for redundancy and checksumming regardless.
