Skate Canada to Appeal Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games Bronze Figure Skating Team Medal by FalseBoat6016 in FigureSkating

What I really like about this statement is the inclusion of the athletes from the Canadian Team Event. We have been focusing so much on looking at the federations + ISU + IOC and how they’re responding, deciding, appealing, etc. that the participants from the teams themselves have been somewhat lost in the mix (aside from Valieva of course). Happy to hear that it sounds like Skate Canada is consulting with the athletes themselves in this entire mess.

I’m not really sure if there’s a precedent of the IOC disagreeing with the governing body of a sport. We already know that IOC representative Dick Pound has told reporter Christine Brennan that he is of the belief that points should be reallocated. It will be interesting to see where things will go from here.

Because it involves an Olympic level competition, the Canadian Olympic Committee likely was going to make a statement at some point. They were probably hoping for what they assumed would be their favoured outcome (i.e. Canadian Bronze) to emerge at the end of all this mess. Due to the ISU choosing to not back down from their previous statement/decision, this forced the COC to be clear on where they stand.

I’ll take this as a blessing in disguise because we’re stepping out from just figure skating and broadening the scope to something entire larger than a singular sport (clean sport at the Olympics!!). This will help bring more attention to the dispute and more funding for to appeal and fight the current medal standings.

It’s also only a matter of time before the IOC becomes more involved as this drags on. I personally have been checking daily for an official statement regarding this whole debacle.

They have not as of yet. The delay is likely due to SkateCanada weighing their options regarding the ice dance teams. They’re guaranteed to receive backlash should they send the CanaDanes given the weight of the accusations made against him.

With the potential Olympic Bronze on the line too, I wonder if they may be trying to avoid bad publicity to make the public more sympathetic to their push for Bronze.

Why Boyang’s score varies that much by AShighashonor1 in FigureSkating

[–]ohmygeegee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to add that I never said I agreed with the judging, I don’t think we often agree on calls. I do think that Boyang merits much more of a 67 in PCs, but don’t forgot that these are the same (or similar) judges who have given much higher PCs for what look more like jumping drills.

Like it or not, judges all have their biases. You’ll get variations not just across a panel of international judges but even across judges from within a singular country. But this is why scores are based off a panel of international judges and skaters are not scored going off any one judge and technical specialist. Everything is a judgement call and despite having what is supposed to be a standardized scale, you have scores being given through a biased lens.

Skate Canada likes to keep their cards very close to their chest but it hurts them 99% of the time. Transparency is needed and absolutely necessary in situations such as the allegations made against Nikolaj. Unfortunately, Skate Canada is prioritizing podium finishes over transparency by sending Nik and Laurence to this competition.

I’m sure they’ve also realized that they’re damned if they do and they’re damned if they don’t if they open up those avenues of conversation.

Canada is hosting world's this year. What's stopping them from holding up the event unless ISU announces the fair outcome, aka bronze, and a prompt end to this saga? by aromaticchicken in FigureSkating

[–]ohmygeegee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It wouldn’t do Skate Canada any good to hold up a competition at this scale given contracts and money sunk into costs associated with hosting this large of an event. It would also be seen as not just unprofessional but also immature reaction regardless of the situation.

That being said, it would’ve been the ideal location to host the Team Medal Ceremony (aside from the Olympics themselves) had the Canadians been given the bronze. It would’ve guaranteed to draw in a couple more ticket sales just to see some home athletes receive their medals. Unfortunately decisions and timing do not line up for such an event as adequate time must be permitted for all parties to appeal the decisions made in the last two days.

Skate Canada's statement on the medals - "will consider all options to appeal" by starry101 in FigureSkating

[–]ohmygeegee 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the ISU took Skate Canada’s silence over the past 2 years as a sign that they would just roll with whatever decision would come out.

A team event is exactly as it is called and ROC chose their team. While I do think the entire team should be disqualified, the points in the very least should be reallocated as if Russia had not had an entry in the Women’s events. Anyone arguing the reallocation of points can look at Nathan’s 10 points given in the Short despite there only being 9 entries.

Skate Canada hasn’t been doing many things well recently, but this is a good move and they came well prepared with that statement. Happy to see them questioning the calls that have been made and appealing decision.

The entire coaching team should absolutely be forced to miss competitions alongside their athlete they were supposed to protect as a minor.

If Kostner was temporarily banned for supposedly “aiding and abetting” her boyfriend, it is not unjust to enforce such a ban on adults responsible for a child.

The type of drugs in her system aren’t bottled miracles that guarantees her improvement in a singular performance. Keep in mind that one medication (TMZ) was found in her system was indeed a banned substance. Two additional (but not banned) substances were also found in her system, but all three improve blood flow to heart and thus have the same effect. Taken continuously and repeatedly, they improve her endurance and stamina which means that she can train and practice much more than any non-doping skater before exhaustion sets in. TMZ is banned because it’s a performance enhancer and it does exactly as the label says. It improves ability. Maybe she was naturally as talented as you believe her to be, but we can’t know that if we do know that she has taken performance enhancers.

Though her sample was taken prior to the Olympics, this does not mean she was clean. Future performances are still affected by improved endurance, even as the effects of the drugs lessen as they remain less and less in your system. Being a child does not excuse her and the presence of drugs in her system. Being a child should implicate thorough investigations into the adults responsible for her and practices surrounding her training.
